Lovely thought provoking song, very dreamy. Great back story too, shame about his sad ending, so thanks for the info and another cool show.

There's always sadness when I think about his greatness and how it went unnoticed for so long. Thank you, Nick, for giving us your music!

I think in the song "Riverman" the riverman he refers to is Charon, who in greek mythology was the ferryman of the underworld and carriers of souls.

❤❤❤❤ JUST GO FOR IT and RIP MY HEART OUT! If any song can do it, THIS ONE DOES! When I first heard this in the 70s I bawled like a baby. This for me, is the quintessential greay Nick song EVER! 😢😢😢😢❤❤❤ THX. Drake NEVER gained fame SADLY and died young and unknown but one of most UNIQUELY intraditionally MOODY folk sounding MARVEL geniuses of the era as people finally didcovered decades later! 😢❤

Well done! You guys nailed it. How about for the next Nick Drake song "Three Days", great guitar work and one of the few songs he wrote about a friend. A little on the kinky side. Some one already requested my favorite, Northern Sky. Jon, I also have a cd of out takes and demos, you probably have it as well...I'm gonna troll around the site and listen to other stuff you guys hit. But man, this was thorough! I enjoyed...Oh, John Martyn is another great english guitar picker and was actually a friend of Nick. I know you're familiar with him...

*John Martyn's "Solid Air" was written for and about Nick (recorded with bassist from Five Leaves Left, Danny Thompson) kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5rOgYSFlq-jnLc

Love Nick Drake and this song, though as an album, I think Bryter Layter is better. I love the Robert Kirby arrangements and there are some excellent contributions to a couple of the songs from John Cale. ‘Northern Sky’ from that record has to be one of the most beautiful love songs ever written and has appeared in a number of movies and shows, without lessening its appeal!

I flipflop between which of the first 2 albums is better - usually it's the one I listened to last. But Pink Moon just blows me away every time. Cheers, Jon.

Perhaps we could add his interest in William Blake and probably later existensialists like Albert Camus (The Myth of Sisyfos: Is life worth living, or is it not?)

Thanks for your comment. I think you're right about Blake, and I know when he was studying at Cambridge Nick was very well read, so Camus must have been on his radar. More Nick Drake coming soon. Cheers, Jon.

Great choice Jon - another true national treasure from your box of goodies!! He really does sound like a hazy, late summer evening stroll through a quiet English meadow. Very dreamy. (an American equivalent perhaps being Ray Lamontagne's "Empty") Musically consistent, I've heard nothing by him I don't adore. Can't recall how I first came across him but probably the connection with John Martyn and/or Danny Thompson, both of whom I regard highly. Nick felt dreadfully under-appreciated with the lack of sales, but to his credit Chris Blackwell at Island never lost faith, hence the legacy we all now have to enjoy. Perhaps the over-indulgence with hashish and the lengthy stint in Morocco didn't help with his confidence, who knows ......But the fragility that shines through this stunning music is somehow the core of it's beauty. There's a very good documentary about Nick's life, narrated by his beautiful sister Gabrielle - "A Skin Too Few" : kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHuZqmaheJZ1pqc Also, Brad Pitt (who's fanatical about Jeff Buckley and Nick Drake) produced this knowledgeable documentary for BBC Radio 2. (Edit): Whilst disappearing down a Nick Drake rabbit-hole once again this weekend (resurfacing only for sandwich and a spot of Rugby here and there) , I've also come across this 2010 BBC4 doc. "Way to Blue - The Songs of Nick Drake" which I'm just sitting down to watch and may/may not interest fellow subscribers, melomaniacs and Audiophiles alike. I'm off for another hour and 26 minutes down the labyrinth !! Enjoy..... kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXTChIiEj96SeZo ** Well, I watched this and sat completely (and unexpectedly) MESMERISED - this is not what I was anticipating. At all..... I won't spoil it for you, but I CANNOT recommend this watch highly enough, whether you're a Nick Drake fan or a convert-in-waiting, I promise you this video is INDISPENSABLE...... @@theaudiophiles7889

.Lisa Hannigan..yeah, she was quite something, wasn't she? Really quite rousing and think Nick would've been thrilled at the interpretation. She was great on "....chime of a city clock" too, a song which is (in no small part thanks to this rendition) climbing it's way to the top of my ND favourites list. I thought Lisa Hannigan came across as more than a little Bjork-esque.... (but of course with a name like that she had to be Irish - it hadn't twigged at this point that I'd heard her voice loads before on Damien Rice's album "O" - "Blower's daughter etc..). A former belle of Rice, and now with her own solo career which will be worth a peek. I know you weren't particularly keen on 'Pink Moon', but the version here with Krystle Warren and Teddy Thompson was an absolute joy which they both appeared to thoroughly relish. In fact, apart from perhaps Green Gartside's rather shaky start, it's pretty hard to find fault anywhere, (it'd be pretty impossible for any red-blooded male not to at least slightly melt at Kirsty Almeida's delivery of "Cello Song" !!) and I was delighted watching and listening to the inimitable Danny Thompson (who I've only just learned played on both "Colour of Spring" AND "Spirit of Eden" (!!) ).....weaving his magic throughout. Glad you enjoyed the video too - the most appreciative and respectful audience, with not a damned iPhone in sight!! P.S on my way out of the rabbit-hole, I found this Letter to Nick from Gabrielle, in case you've missed it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYfGmpKLjq6Mjbs @@theaudiophiles7889
