In my opinion, the song is about him hearing a woman playing the piano and reminding him of the loss of his mother. He is imagining the little boy being there who is actually him watching her play. Such an amazing heart wrenching song, but yet somehow uplifting :)

Thank you for mentioning this! I had no idea. It seems Mr. Mulvey has a habit of borrowing poetry. His song "Meet Me There" is based on and borrows from the Coleman Barks interpretation of a Rumi poem. There are more accurate translations of the poem, but Barks' version is one of the more popular ones, perhaps because it's prettier and more easily digestible. However, Coleman Barks does not even speak Persian, which is the poem's language of origin. I learned all of this because I was so captivated by the lyrics of "Meet Me There" that I went on a bit of an internet deep dive. Now, as beautiful as the song is, I have mixed feelings about it. Edit: By the way, this song (Cucurucu) additionally references a seemingly popular old Mexican song called "Cucurrucucú Paloma." I suggest giving that a look-up, as well.

Beautiful song, I really thought it was from a Mexican singer, the cucurrucu paloma song is very famous and many mothers sings to their child the melody, all in this song took me to those days and to the present, I felt like it was written for me (I know how selfish!) Is very beautiful to read the comments and see how many people connected to the song in different ways and very sad that great songs don't get the recognition they deserve.

I just blew my own mind today 😆 i was literally talking about this song yesterday to a co worker. They used to play this song at my work a lot since it was one of my old bosses favourites. Then they updated the sound system at work and we can no longer make playlists so I've been plauged by the same songs every day for about a year now with the occasional new release thrown in there. But anyway i was just reading somewhere that your favourite genre of music reflects what your personality is, which is a bit of a trouble for me since I'm quite passionate about almost all genres. So do i have every personality? 😆 Anyway i decided to Google what Portico Quartets genre might be since i find that they do not have a single bad song, therefore they are my favourite band. And as i googled it listed the members, and i saw Nick's name and was like, wait a minute..... I know this one. And obviously i find this song absolutely brilliant. So to find out nick used to be a member of my favourite band. 😌😌 Very pleased right now.

Softly, in the evening dusk, a woman is singing to me She takes me back down the vista of my years, until I see I see a child underneath the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings Pressing the poised feet of his mother who smiles at him as she sings Cucurucu, cucurucu Softly now in the evening dusk, a woman is singing to me She takes me back down the vista of my years, until I see A boy, a child underneath the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings Pressing the poised feet of his mother who smiles at him as she sings Yearning to belong, yearning to belong My heart beats with a ceaseless longing of a yearning to belong In spite of myself, and all of these nursery songs My heart beats with a ceaseless longing of a yearning to belong Till the melodies of childish days, are upon, upon me And they take me back, back down the river They keep leading me on, they lead me to the sea And all of my manhood is cast Down in the flood of remembrance, and I weep like a child for the past Singing cucurucu, cucurucu Singing cucurucu, cucurucu I see a child underneath the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings Pressing the poised feet of his mother who smiles at him as she sings Listen to me son, I'll tell you why your father's strong 'Cause he can still say every single day, he's yearning to belong Yearning to belong, yearning to belong My heart beats with a ceaseless longing of a yearning to belong In spite of myself, and all of these nursery songs My heart beats with a ceaseless, meets with a peaceless burning to belong Singing cucurucu, cucurucu Singing cucurucu Singing cucurucu, cucurucu, cucurucu

PIANO By D.H. Lawrence Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me; Taking me back down the vista of years, till I see A child sitting under the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as she sings. In spite of myself, the insidious mastery of song Betrays me back, till the heart of me weeps to belong To the old Sunday evenings at home, with winter outside And hymns in the cosy parlour, the tinkling piano our guide. So now it is vain for the singer to burst into clamour With the great black piano appassionato. The glamour Of childish days is upon me, my manhood is cast Down in the flood of remembrance, I weep like a child for the past. 1918 Keith's poetry archive. Keith's favorite poems.
