Thanks for this video Nick. I watched it back when you first posted it and just today I watched it again, this time as a step-by-step guide while I took apart my first Benchmade. I've taken many knives apart, but nothing with an Axis lock. This video made disassembly very easy for me. Keep the great videos coming!

I live on the Alaska hwy, its oil field country. There are a ton of real shitty drivers, crazy roads and we work in the worst of weather. I like having a glass breaker just in case and to help others. every year I see ALOT of people in ditches, flipped over or trashed from hitting a moose at high speeds. have also been the passenger in a rollover. Its a nice option to have, for me anyway, I don't mind glass breakers 1 bit.

Today was the first time I used a glass breaker-it was on a pen, and we were doing some demo-ing to our house so we had a dumpster, and I found some glass in it. I took a bunch of jabs at almost max power and I couldn’t get it to shatter. It was strong glass. I was in the end by stepping on it out I think it was tempered. I saw some other glass and I hit it lightly with the back of the pen and it shatters all 2-3 feet of it, it was so satisfying. It was just for testing purposes, so I definitely agree with your thoughts on the glass breaker, but if it doesn’t take up much space and doesn’t protrude much so why not, it’s a big tactical-type knife anyway.

Hey Nick, a small tip I found helpful for getting knives back together. Use a spare driver bit as a slave pin to get the blade and washers aligned. The smaller tip makes it easy to get it started when only a portion of the pivot hole is in the right area. Once you get the axis lock in place you use the pivot to push the bit out from the back. It makes the process so much easier. For most knives a normal sized bit is pretty much the perfect size.

I don't NEED a glass breaker, but if I have it and don't need it rather than needing it and not having it, then I will be in a much better place than the alternative. it is a nice thing to have if you are going to carry a knife everyday and frequently drive a car (potential accidents and all that). And addressing someone that mentioned earlier "Why not just use the knife blade?" well if you have to, I say definitely do it, but, I did see Crocket do a glass breaker test with a Contego vs. the blade of a Spyderco. I suggest seeing it if you are interested. I can see the possibility of breaking the blade on more brittle steels, but if you have to use the blade, then do it.

Astonishing perseverance. Considering this knife is a Black Class 'tactical' military style tool, do you think that those hair-thin omega springs are really the best choice? The springs in my 940 broke after less than a year of light pencil-sharpening type use. Surely something a little more robust would be more suitable?

This knife looks similar to the Benchmade Rift which I had for a few weeks a while back. I could never get a good action out of it, even after working on the pivot. Ended up returning it to the shop. Oh well, my tactical street cred wasn't good enough to carry that knife anyways.

Love the vids, Nick. However, the Contego is a black class suited for military, LEO's, first responders and the like. Therefore I believe this knife is meant for use with gloves. The glass breaker is a no brainer on this type of knife and the users it was intended for. This knife is in no way meant to be an average Joe's EDC. (Even though I still EDC mine).
@thomaslanders11627 жыл бұрын
I just saw the comment in BM QC.. I'm not a fanboy of any knife co. I honestly think they are mostly overpriced and all suck in different ways. I handled about 4 of the new 560 Freeks. They all looked good. I bought one and it appears flawless.. People will bitch about the rubbery handles and partial half length liners. I've used it some and really like the knife.. $110 isn't bad especially from BM.. I agree that BM should come out with an explanation of their hiring blind grinders etc.. We will see...

@DanielReyes-hz1qk7 жыл бұрын
Soggy Avenger The Griptillians are a LITTLE easier to take apart and maintain because they don't have full length liners. Plus once you've frog lubed (or your choice of rust prevention) everything general maintenance is just pulling the pivot out, sliding the blade and washers out to clean/relube and re-install.

Hey Nick, I just found your channel and already enjoyed quite a few of your videos. I personally like to carry a knife with a glass breaker because it's a safe bet. It only weighs a couple grams so it's not like it will be a noticeable thing. If I ever come into a situation where I need to break glass, will there be stuff around that I could use or throw to do that? Most likely, but I still like to play it safe. There are statisticly more unlikely scenarios that happened, like a man struck by lighning twice in 30seconds. But I don't go crazy over it, like in everything needs a glassbreaker, one thing that will do the job is enough for me. And while that may be unnecessary realisticly, so is carrying a knife for most people and we still do it. Doesn't hurt anything but may come in handy - so why not. Keep up the good work, you make awesome videos. Greetings, Soly

I haven't. But that's something I'll need to see to believe. Fanboys have said "Benchmade's Back!" when they happened to get a good one hundreds of times, so I'd like to see evidence of a systematic change from Benchmade themselves. Maybe announcing a new hire or re-emphasizing quality. "We had a problem, it's been addressed". Something like that. Maybe in a few months once old stock is cleared, I'll visit a local store and check out new stock.

I use a proxon micro click which is a micro torque screwdriver to tighten all of the screws and pivot. It prevents accidentally stripping the threads off the torx screws and all of the others also you have all the settings for all of your knives so you always get the same results as it was before you took the knife apart so the tension on the pivot is at its best with no blade slack side to side with a free moving blade. I always use S2 tool steel bits as they are very tough and the screws/torx would let go before they do. I’ve had a full set of wiha screw drivers and a full set of Wera electricians drivers even all of the impact driver & drill driver bits - I spent thousands over the years building up my tool collection all with irreplaceable odd bits and bobs that no one has like handy downs from my dad from 40 years ago and it’s all gone including expensive pockets knives. Thieving arse holes.

The glass breakers make the most sense if you're a first responder. If you regularly tend to car accidents it helps to have the glass breaker handy on your knife, it saves you at least one tool to keep on your person. Also, I would have really enjoyed it if you had started to swear in a different language when you started to get annoyed. Missed an opportunity there I think.
