My theory on the mystery of the Denny's Joke: Imagine a cop who shows up on the scene of some horrible tragedy, and he has to make tough calls and give orders. Later on when he thinks back about it, he doesn't know if he ordered the right thing. I assume that's what Nick was trying to go for, but then once the initial punchline bombed, his wet brain and ego tried to over explain and completely burn the whole thing into utter nonsense.
