Nick, wonderful video. One of the hardest things a man can do is acknowledge the good, the bad, and the ugly in his father, and acknowledge that many of those same things are in himself. I'm in awe that you can do it publicly. I hope your fiance appreciates the quality of man that she has.

The best thing you can do is accept your father as a human being and realize he probably tried to do his best, from his perspective. I had to forgive YEARS of abuse I endured as a child and make peace with my father. I was incredibly cathartic.

You guys are the epitome of what we mean when we talk about "knife people" or "gun people". The person who will take a half hour in the middle of a gun/ knife show to answer a question or do a demonstration just to help you out. Really, down to earth- nice folks!

It's funny how we don't really see the good, the bad and the ugly of our parents until later in life. As a child, my Dad was either all good or all ugly. He just passed away in Oct at age 83. Brilliant man who designed missles for Raytheon. However, a lot of hidden ugly in my family. Alcoholism effected everyone in one way or another. I inherited the demons early on in life. Great and heartfelt tribute to your Dad. You have a way of connecting with people. Thanks for sharing.

Not sure what to say, Nick. This is very moving. Nothing I can add other than what you said resonates with me. The older I get the more I realize how much of me is my father. I try to live up to his "good" but my own "bad" and "ugly" often disappoint me. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Nick, that was amazing. Of all the knives I own, the one that matters most is the Old Timer that I gave my dad for Father's Day the first year I was old enough to legally buy one. He was still carrying it the day he died, and I've carried it on every important day in my life since then. All these years later, he's still with me on every busted knuckle, thrown tool and procrastinated chore, but he's also the co-owner of every time I manage to triumph over a machine. Thanks again for the reminder.

I've got something similar from my great uncle. it's a stockman knife made by kutmaster, best I can tell it's from the 1940s. he didn't have any kids himself, so when he passed he gave it to his brother, who eventually passed it on to me. he used to sharpen it on a bench grinder, so it had an ugly edge, but he didn't ruin the temper and with about 45 minutes on a set of oil stones and a bit of stropping it became three of the sharpest blades in my collection. he might have even inadvertently improved the temper, that thing holds an edge damn near as good as some of my stuff in way more modern steels. I don't carry it every day since I'm pretty good at losing things and it has no provisions for a pocket clip or lanyard, and you need both hands to open it, but whenever I get a hankering to carry a traditional its my first choice.

"The unexamined life is not worth living." ~ Socrates. Sharing perspective borne of love, pain and introspection is a valuable gift to those open to receiving it. Thanks, Nick, for taking the "risk" intimacy demands. I feel sorry for the viewer who felt compelled to give a "thumbs-down." Hopefully one day they'll understand.

Nick, SOG warranties all of their knifes for life. I know that the paratool is not one of your favorites but for the cost of return postage you can send it in to them and they will rebuild it to factor new. I have had one as my EDC for 25+ years now and still use it every day and have had it rebuilt a few times over the years.

Our spirits, our perspectives, our influences are our EDC. Thank you for sharing and helping me see that. I think I'm ready to upgrade my own kit. Much love, Brother.

I've been watching your videos for a few months now, but don't think I've commented on any of them. Thanks for posting this. The EDC aspect reminds me of my grandpa, who has been gone for almost a year. He always had a pocket knife, pencil, pad of paper, change purse, 22lr naa. Christmas is hard this year without him. Alzheimer's is the worst. The deeper and darker part of the video and our lives, reminds me of my dad who has been gone since 95. Took me a long time to let go of the darkness of him and just acknowledge that he was a broken man like all of us.

Came for the review, stayed for the great advice. My father was not a good father. However, having been a father for five years now, I see a lot of my father in me. Way more than I ever noticed or cared to admit in the past. BUT, I AM a much better father than he'll ever be, and that is what matters. Ironically, I think I'm a better person because I don't want to be what he was. Still good, bad and ugly, but I work on that every day. Thanks for sharing, Nick.

Introspection and self-reflection are what keeps us grounded and real. A man without them is a hollow shell, being led only by his basic instincts and lowest desires. Nick I’ve only been subscribed to your channel for only a few weeks. I am so impressed with your channel, your reviews, and just you as a person. When I first started watching I at first thought you might be some sort of knife snob but then I watched the vid where you were talking about some guy showing off his collection of 2 knives that wasn’t the most expensive knives or best and how he was ashamed of his collection, or maybe it was you using it as an example and wasn’t factual but anyways it made me rethink a lot of things about my collection and just about life in general and about how the important thing is things that bring me joy regardless of the price. Now I watch this vid and wow powerful stuff. Just wanted to thank you for being real and giving me the motivation to rethink things. Keep on putting out the great content

Your dad taught you good life lessons. This video hits home, my father has good, bad, and ugly. To say that our relationship is strained is an understatement (monumental). He too has a love and need for tools, and passed it on. On a lighter note zip ties can be used a few times, when cutting a tie cut at the head to make a shortie tie. Many can be found during the course of the day, like pennies pick up shortie zip ties too.

Thanks Nick - for this, and all of your contributions to the community. I'm closing in on the fourth anniversary of losing my mom,, probably due to some of her own vices and missteps, and I appreciate the insight to look at the lessons she taught me - good, bad and ugly. Be well and know that your dad would be awfully proud of you.

Hello to you and to my fellow fans. FYI, this is my first time ever commenting on KZbin. I was compelled because you really put your heart out there in this one. After discovering "The Nick" a couple weeks ago, I've enjoyed several of your reviews so far. I'm proud to say I ordered my first "real" knife this week (0452CF), largely due to your showcasing it and I'm VERY excited (arriving Monday). Ironically, my first folder was a Cryo, which I bought 6 months ago. Please have faith that your efforts to share your knowledge and humour are well respected and appreciated. All the best to you from your newest Canadian viewer.

So many of us have so much in common personally... not much of it seen on KZbin or content of any kind... So it's easy to forget... or maybe never even know... that in many cases and ways... we're more alike than it seems. Thanks Nick. I literally laugh from you (in a good way) at least once during every vid I've seen. I smiled during this one. 🤙✌️

Exodus 20:12 is a beautiful thing. Really appreciate you sharing part of your life with us, Nick. The book of Job gives me solace. All of the terrible things that happened to him, he got up, tore his robe, shaved his head, fell to the ground in worship, saying,"Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised." Amen.

Nick, i know this is one of your older videos but i just wanted to say thank you for the wise words about “healing” included at the end. I’ve been dealing with some stuff that has had a negative impact on my life and i really needed to hear your input on those things. Hope all is well!

There are things we carry with us everyday other than our gear. It's nice to hear someone talk about that. Great video.

Yep. It's very real. Hard to complain about a heavy pack when it's the lightest thing on your shoulders. Everybody's got something up there, but nobody sees it.

That SOG paratool is really good! Its blunt and needlenose at the same time as it functions in an angle too.
