Christopher Walken is more known for comedy these days, and people doing funny impressions of him, not quite remembering what a phenomenal dramatic actor he was back in the day.

Three years ago I became a REALLY BIG fan of Chris Walken. The 1st movie that pushed my buttons was THE DEAD ZONE. Then I bought THE DEER HUNTER and saw it for the first time (uncut) ALL the way through without commercial interruption. What an eye-opening experience. Walken was SUPERB in that movie. No wonder he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The three scenes where Walken shines supreme are the POW scene, the hospital, and the Russian Roulette finale. What ACTING! And he can dance 2!

Great post man..your exactly right. i saw it for the 1st and only time a few years after it came out...not in the theater, but on cable or something. It only takes a small snip it like this for the WHOLE movie and emotions to come flooding back again. To this day i can only watch certain small segments...and never the ending..probably the most powerful movie i have ever seen. I actually thought about joining the Army after high school in '82, but after seeing this, i changed my mind!!!!! Went to college instead and took a desk job!!!! Lol

Older guys on the football team in HS started quoting it and talking about how great it was. I finally got to see it a few years later, probably around '81 or early '82 on cable or something...i remember watching it with my dad a vet and we were both yelling and cursing at the TV during the 1st Russian Roulette scene in the jungle...probably the most intense scene in cinema history...anyways...but wow, how this film changed my mine about going into the Army after high school, QUICK!!!!

Actually, this scene isn't as great as everyone thinks. Yes, Chris Walken's acting is brilliant. However, no patient would be questioned by a doctor while teetering on a building's balcony edge. Also, when distraught over the question about his parents, no distraught person would maintain his "cross legged pose". Poor directing, all around, in this scene.
