Here's an opinion with a theory: The current shows are tighter than the early ones (although the original team may have had funnier and more original material). The writing team now is also huge by comparison. I reckon that the original show may not have refined, switched and culled sketches as strenuously as they do now. It's possible that the sketches were rehearsed pretty much as performed, rather than being rewritten all the way up to 11:30.

During the 40th anniversary show, Bill Murray sort of paid tribute to this character by "singing" the theme to "Jaws". Still sounded alright singing it, as did Paul Shaffer with playing on the piano.

Bill Murray was so good replacing Chevy Chase he made me forget about missing Chevy Chase. In fact Bill Murray was such a very refreshing addition to SNL I personally admit the Season 3 and 4 years of SNL the last two with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd were the peak best ones. You had Father Guido Sarducci introduced. You also had Al Frankin and Tom Davis. Mr. Bill. Essentially the best seasons of cast members were together 1977-1978 and 1978-1979.

@jedijones
@jedijones Жыл бұрын
@@nicky2coats There wasn't an obsession with trying to make money off youth then. Now every TV and movie casting director tries to cast young-looking people. By the mid-80s you had 30-year-olds playing teenagers. Hollywood self-selects for people who look younger than they are.

I saw this live when Bill first did this skit and laughed for a week. Such a great character and based on real lounge singers. I know it’s true. I’ve played with some of them. The 2001 theme thing is so Vegas. Elvis did it in his later shows. Hilarious.

Elvis actually used Also Sprach Zarathustra as the opening to his stage entrance 5 years BEFORE this sketch. Elvis died 3 months AFTER Star Wars premiered.
