Just looking, the textures, models, and all visuals have improved by a lot, but they took a dive in the art direction. As a commercial photo / video person, The new footage looks like log or raw video rather than color graded cinematic imagery. The scorching red hue of bill’s town, and the blue hues at the start, each represented different moods that aided in the story. The new look is just too clinical to me.

I think collectibles being a physical object Joel picks up adds a lot more than just immersion, it makes the scene where Joel rejects the photo of Sarah that Tommy offers him all the more powerful because through the whole game, Joel has been pocketing every trinket and doodad he comes across, but instead of thoughtlessly pocketing the photo, he hands it back to Tommy. This makes the scene where Ellie hands Joel the photo all the stronger, because he finally accepts this memory for all of the joy and pain it brings him. wish that Naughty Dog focused on these elements of storytelling more than traditional cinematic storytelling.

I can't decide which version I like better. Joel and the other gal at the beginning of Chapter 1 now look their age, which is great, but at the same time, the characters' facial expressions have changed. Where Joel once looked determined, he now looks weary. Where Ellie once looked feisty, she now looks vulnerable. It's not worse, it's just ... different. Much of the background art is improved, but a few of the original environments still seem preferable. For example, I was saddened but also chuckled when I noticed that they'd removed Pluto from a poster in Joel's daughter's room. I liked the scummy water of the original, but I also like the brackish water of the remake. I think both versions are flavours worth enjoying. I think I'll buy a copy of the new version in another month or two when it's released for PC and enjoy the excuse for a replay.

@pedro10a1 Disgustingly different? No. Just made actually human looking. They looked way too cartoony and perfect on PS3, they seemed way more flat than the environments surrounding them. They've made skin stretch more realistically. They've added detailed skin textures with wrinkles and pores. There is some subtlety in facial animations that was totally lost in the original that have been brought out and add depth to the performances. Joel actually looks his age and has patches of grey in his hair. If they had upgraded everything else in this game but kept the faces proportionally identical with the new lighting, subsurface scattering, and textures, they would look awful. When the original game came out in 2013 I thought it was one of the most realistic games I'd ever seen. I played it again very recently, and I'm playing the remake now. The faces have aged noticeably poorly in the original. Love it to death, but it sure was released on now 16 year old hardware at the tail end of its lifespan

Maybe it's the way it was captured, but a lot of times the remake feels washed out or less cinematic in color tone. A few examples: 2:50, 5:18 (Ellie is pink), 13:45 (That "excessive red and yellow light" made that entrance to the town for me). That all said, I'm looking forward to trying it out for myself when the price drops.

@@That-Will-Do-It "This was how we wanted to look from the very beginning " is just corporate speak to justify selling an old product to the audience. George Lucas was probably the first to use it when he was trying to sell the highly controversial Special Editions to Star Wars fans. @rainey06au2 жыл бұрын
@@Evan_Schaefering my thoughts exactly. Of course their PR is going to say that. In reality they've probably come to the conclusion that they have already remade about 70% of the assets and characters while developing Part II (from flashbacks etc.) and thought that it probably wasn't the most challenging undertaking to retrofit most of it back into the Part I story. You can see it in the destroyed vehicles that they asset dropped into the new game too, they are actually not as well designed or cleverly integrated into the scenes as the original vehicles. Some of the 'upgrade' looks out of place because of it. It's not their original vision at all.

@@That-Will-Do-It There is no way saturation is a hardware limit sort of deal. That's just color my man. Color is a slider on many 3d/editing software that has a less affects on CPU/GPU computations. Many games had darker colors oven before ps3 era. Heavy computational tasks such as lighting, particle effects, model polycounts etc are the real issues for hardware. The original/remaster colors gave TLOU a true sense of uniqueness when it came to separating it from many other cliché post apocalyptic medias. A sense of a brighter day in the chaos of a broken world. *Hope.* Now its all just gloomy. TLOU kind of reminded me a bit of Mad Max Fury road. It’s made for crazy people like me who are ok with buying something multiple times just to get small or huge improvements. Or for those who’ve never played if ofc. It's not a new game, it's not a complete overhaul to such an extent that it's a new game like FFVIIR, it's a remake a rerelease. Sony is already upcharging their games to $70 but on top of that, a remake like this shouldn't be the full price as it's not a new game. Destroy All Humans 1 & 2, Spyro Reignited, Resident Evil 2 & 3, all released for $40. All are remakes of much older games and added as much if not more. Why give Sony special treatment? Even Activision, ACTIVISION, lowered the price of COD MW Remastered to $30 since it didn't have multiplayer, and that game added just as much.

@@justmega9569 I don't think that's really the case, you know, compared to the actual plot that attracted most folks in addition to fun or brutal gameplay. Regardless, standards have obviously been raised since then and the lighting doesn't harm the game nearly as much as you think it does- if anything it makes the experience all the more compelling and, to use the ever over used word, "inmersive". Regardless, we're past thelat era of jarring uncanny Valley look of character models and can relate to them/ read their mannerisms and characterisations a whole lot better subsequently making them more relatable. Such little nuance can't be understated in how essential it is, especially when viewing a game through a realistic vein a decade late; things aiming for realism don't necessarily age that well, especially when the tech exists to make it happen. Anyone remotely familiar with modern day ND knows they prixe themselves of fidelity prowess and pushing the PlayStation hardware as hard as it can, hence why this exists and, in my opinion, the defining version if the game from start to finish. The remaster was arguably unnecessary and offered far less in the grand scheme of things.

Not quite! Older games have more of an artistic decision making with them instead of clean calculations and computations for realism. Oblivion and Skyrim often are better to me without mods because the lighting and scenery. Mods always seem to overlay artistic decisions. This game applies to that but with a more emphasis on developing. I personally love the remake look in part 1, but the remaster kept the original look with higher resolution and frame rate. The technicalities of Part 1 really show that this is a full blown remake and not some better looking remaster like critics say. This is a vast improvement in design and maintains the true to series gameplay, with some added nuances to raise the stakes at higher difficulties. The original TLOU had a lot of methods to “cheese” grounded difficulty where this version doubles down on the survival horror/action gameplay.

Now she looks like an edited version of Ashley Johnson, and, to me, it feels kinda weird, for a lack of a better word. Also, I like a bit more how Joel looked, but _his_ transformation isn't too bothersome. In the sound design side, I actually prefer the old "pew" sound the guns made 😆. Oh yes, the "ground up remake" that began development in the spring of 2021 and came out in the summer of 2022. That makes a lot of sense. It took 5 years to make the original and it only took a year to make this "completely newly made game"? And no one's questioning this? Seriously?? This is, *literally,* the original game with new visual assets over top of it. It has a few other minor tweaks, like a couple character movements and some map alterations here and there, but it is honestly the original game operating underneath a new veneer. Just look at when it began development (April 2021) and understand that games finish development a few months before they actually launch. Also, play both versions and notice how many of the character placements, movements (both playable characters and NPC's), and maps have not changed. Far more has not changed than has (besides visuals). In actuality, the majority of things are 100% identical (when not talking about visuals).

After spending 6 hours in the remake, it’s obvious that this game wasn’t built from scratch. It looks a lot better than the original game but you can tell they just updated the original assets and tweaked the animations. The only things made from scratch are the character models. AI is noticeably better too Atleast

Yeah it's not a remake at all it's just a remaster of the 2014 remaster with a fresh lick of paint, only morons would cough up 70 for this blatant cash grab. I can see it being of some value to PC gamers who never had the chance to play Last of Us but that's about it, i will hang on to my 2014 edition thanks very much

Last Of Us remake: Regardless of how stunning they can make it look, the Last of Us on the very last days of the PS3's life cycle was outstanding and nothing can ever compare to how it hit the first time playing it.
