One very important thing to consider when buying a new sofa, especially for people living in apartments: make sure your sofa will fit into the elevator, and if there is no elevator, make sure it can be easily carried up the stairs.

There are some basic comfort things to watch for as well, like depth of couch front to back - shorter people would probably feel more comfortable with a less deep sofa so that their back is on the backrest and the front edge of the sofa roughly lines up with the backs of their knees. A tall household might not enjoy all their furniture having low backrests, etc etc.
@te72703 жыл бұрын
Yes! Cheap seating is often way too short for the thighs, or made for short people of the colonial era? 😆 taller people need that back and neck support, depth, not sunken low seating either! And older folks find it harder to get out of low seating, truly the “pits”.

N pilate, YAAAAS! Try a flat sheet folded a few times of completely laid out to envision the feel of it. You want to make sure it has the front feet of sofa and chairs along it’s perimeter otherwise it looks like my moms taste 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤷♂️. Another rule for rugs that I have is consider ordering DuPont stain master higher end carpet and have it cut/bound by the store you order at (big box, online, specialty, etc). You want it to last and stand up to pets, people, nick when he comes over lol. Last advice is leave one foot of flooring all around the space and let the rug be large enough to encase that much space in any formal living area that is enclosed mostly or a bedroom. It works in choppy/walled in spaces more than open concept. It will really dampen the noise! And a robot vacuum will keep it clean without any work on your part! They come with WiFi app enabled technology to run when you aren’t home.

@@juliananton7800 Thanks for reminding me about area rugs that you can buy and have bound at the store. I had a remnant done that way in my college/early career years. Thank you. I suggest another important tip: structure. The form and proportions matter a lot, not just seat height & depth, etc but also the main features. For example I realized all the sofas I liked had legs, lifting the seat base as far way from the floor as possible (without compromising quality), and I hated all those "heavy" blocks that seem to sit on the floor, or those skirted ones that could hide a nightmare instead of letting some air flow.

Affordable is relative. When we bought our first house almost 17 years ago, I TREMBLED at how much we spent. But it was such as classic style, and it has a hardwood frame with leather upholstery so it stood up to our son jumping and eating (and full disclosure, vomiting), that I'm only now looking at replacing it. So if you can save up and spend more, you won't be re-buying a couch every two years, so the couch will be affordable in the long term.

I know that problem. I am pretty happy with my Söderhamn couch from Ikea. It is not the greatest quality, but definitely worth the price. The Samsta and the Finnsta fabrics (I have both) are both pretty smooth so the fur doesn't get caught on it and with the Finnsta fabric, if my cats do scratch on it and pull a thread I can pull that thread back in. Also you can buy seperate covers for the like the armchairs and switch them out if they get too scratched up. Also it is pretty easy to buy different covers even if Ikea discontinues that couch, because there are other companies that sell them.

My top criteria: 1) firm cushions (that stays firm) 2) let's me stretch out on it. Lay down, sideways, frontways, backways, all the ways. Which is why I love sectionals with a chaise. 3) supports my back to sit straight comfortably. Seats can't be too deep or else it's awkward for my knees or my back. 4) this is obvious for everyone, but I better like the way it looks. Small sectionals that has the same foot print as a couch and a loveseat is a real winner for someone who lives alone like me.

maybe ad in some information about: - Choice of fabric and practicalities (dirt, touch to the skin, etc.) - Choice of foam inside the sofa (durability, dints, etc.) - Use it to actively sit or to lounge - Hight of couches (e.g. related to a window and indowsill that might be behind it) - Space between the seating area and the floor (in terms of making the room look more pacious or not and vaccuum cleaning). - Horizontal and vertical lines in a sofa. I have seen sofa's that are quite wide and have low arm rests, but the pillows of the back are long and high. So the vertical and horizontal are a bit conflicting.

Changed out the slipcovers once and I still LOVE it- so comfortable (I have twice had living rooms about 23’ x 12’ So plenty of room) Arranged perpendicular to the fireplace, with two chairs facing it, antique coffee table i between and a game space behind tue couch

My #1 rule is comfort! That eliminates most furniture that looks great. #2 The backs. Will they crush down over time? I don't like puffy billowy backs. Instead tight and often tufted.

Hi thanks for sharing. I loved some of the couches but I like a couch with a higher back. There doesn’t seem to be much height on those couches.

My boyfriend and I have settled for a recliner sofa. We sat on it and loved all the fluffiness (kinda has a modern slash old style like what he showed in the beginning) but we can see ourselves relaxing and watching tv together. Sorta marshmallow couch but more modern and less poofy

They are functional and there are a lot of people with zero taste or very weird taste that just care for functional and less about how it looks. People like us, that have an interest in design and aesthetics tend to forget about that. Some people just don’t give a shit how stuff looks and those are happy people

Agreed, I think my audience cares about the aesthetics more than your average person that is more concerned with practicality (cup holders?) and comfort. I mean, crocs sell, right? 😂

Hey Nick, I’m actually sofa shopping right now, so thanks for the tips and recommendations! Also, would love to see a video about Grandmillennial design and antiques. I know you don’t care for traditional design trends generally, but you have such a fun perspective and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

If you or those in your home are tall, seat height/depth is crucial. If you have low and shallow seating, they won’t enjoy their knees tucked into their chin while sitting and getting up off of it is only slightly less awkward than getting up off the floor.

I decided to use a Joybird bumper chaise instead of a normal sofa. I have an older house, which means a smaller living room, and none of the four walls are ideal for a couch: one has the fireplace, one has the staircase, one has a big window and the front door, and one has the opening to the dining room. The chaise sits in the middle of the room, facing the fireplace, with two Poang chairs to the side of the fireplace (yeah, I know you said you are over the Poang but I love mine). Because the chaise is open on one side and part of the back, it doesn't dominate or overpower the room.
@Nick_Lewis3 жыл бұрын
Glad you found what you love! It sounds lovely! Yes I'm over Poang, but more people agree with you and love it!

If going with a sofa+armchair arrangement, should they perfectly match like same color, same collection? Or is it better to mix and match within a certain style/palette?

I've recently discovered auctions. There are several good ones where you can buy classic vintage sofas for CHEAP and reupholster them.
@Person-mh6xq3 жыл бұрын
But can you SIT in them first is the big question! Never buy upholstery that you’ll actually use without being able to try it out first.
@te72703 жыл бұрын
Secondhand finds much better quality (has good “bones”). And yes reupholstery can be the answer however older furniture that is in good condition will have better upholstery than what you find today. Fabric quality is crap everywhere you look. I mourn the loss of US-made fabrics, back when warp and woof and thread thickness was unbeatable.

Make sure the furniture will fit through every doorway that it will need to pass through to get to its final destination. As we have aged it has become more important for us to have a couch that is higher making it easier to get up off of.

I found mine at WestElm.com. I splurged (for me anyway) and went with the Harmony Grand 92” in navy velvet. It’s down filled and my end of day treat is coming home and having a cocktail while I ooze into the plushness. Lol. There’s no TV in my living room so it’s just a great place to chill and read while I let the day slip off. Best purchase ever (not counting the Roomba)!

Thanks, Nick, I am a believer that one can score a great used couch of great bones that would be worth having reupholstered. I was gifted 2 amazing armchairs for our summer home in that red nylon fabric. You know the type.... They were on the way to the landfill but we rescued them. You cannot destroy these pieces of furniture because they are so well made and they are small with low backs so they don’t take over the space. They were faded but each year before we close down the house for the winter I spray them with red dye TNT brand and leave them over the winter so the dye sinks in and dries fully. You don’t want to sit in one with white jeans too quickly, lol.
