The older I get "comfortable" becomes a more and more important part of my design style. And moody, I like moody. I like the idea of finding the words that fit what you like rather than plugging into a particular style from a particular time period . Good tips, thanks. .

Mine is a moody ornate traditional with bits of victorian flair. So, ornate wood and warm leathers. Dark amber Tiffany lamps.. dark walls with warm lights and gold gilded mirrors.. lol. It is eclectic but I love it.

My style? I swallowed some 70's, one of my colour palettes two trips to India with obscene excess luggage costs both times, integrated some Edwardian family pieces, flung a few dead ancestors on the walls along with my own original art ...regurgitated the lot and decided that was my style...works for me 😂

Me too! The older you get the more eclectic especially if you feel nostalgia toward passing family member’s pieces. I’m more grandma than I want to be, but seeing her pieces brings me joy (and makes me feel cluttered)

I LOVE dark Academia. Everything about it. I cant do it in my little tiny 18 century cottage, but i took what i could and made my home feel a touch of it. Colours, dark wood, books, glass, fabric and made it kind of fit in to the Scandinavian 18 century house i got. It turned out great. At least for me. Fortunately Scandi wasn't a light theme 250 years ago, it was dark and moody with some strong bold colours. Listening to what you say in this video make me feel even greater with my decisions. Thank you! :)

A prominent architect (at least in FL) used to tell me repeatedly, when I was starting to furnish our house, “don’t worry so much about having things in one style. As long as the piece(s) are GOOD, authentic/real, they’ll all work.” Of course you can take that to extremes and fail, but it’s amazing how well his maxim works. (OTOH, those “good” pieces are rarely inexpensive 😝)

I've been collecting furniture for many, many years and always seem to gravitate toward real natural woods, dove tailed contracted furniture, so most of what I have collected is your traditional styled case goods. Rich walnuts, cherrywood and a few aged oak pieces. are found throughout my home. The problem with traditional is that it can give your space a heavier feel. With the onset of the colorful, relaxed and playful Boho style, I have sprinkled my space with colorful rugs, pillows and throws to bring a more playful modern vibe to an otherwise heavy looking space. The result is a warm, cozy, relaxed style that instantly makes you feel welcomed. Just as I want my home to feel. Thanks for another great video Nick!

I have a massive Monstera plant, a bunch of others, dark jewel tones on the walls and ceiling, and the rest is a blur of antiques, patchwork, brocade, lace, faux fur, wicker, stained glass, seashells, original art of questionable origin, and cats draped in various sculptural poses on all the furniture.

Mock Tudor is the one style that I *absolutely* loathe, so Tan France is doing the world, and his area, a favour by hiding that monstrosity from everyone's eyes. Real Tudor is lots of small rooms (easy to heat), one great hall, mostly interconnected, but with the servant's access corridors running around the inside. I know, I spend too much time visiting English Heritage/National Trust properties - mostly for the landscaping and gardens (and cheese scones).

I’m from Chicago and there are a TON of 1950s bungalows that have been badly updated throughout the years. However, someone built like a very modern, tall, industrial home in black and white on a corner lot amongst all these bungalows! It’s a good way of giving people directions! “Go past the odd modern looking home then turn left…” 😂

My design style for years has been "free from friends & family" because that was what was practical & affordable while raising kids. But if I could design the space of my dreams... Moody, a bit of organic modern, a bit traditional, a bit art deco, a bit Japandi, a bit country cottage, with touches of whimsy & fantasy. I'm slowly working on it finally, after almost 10 years in our house.

This is my biggest challenge. I have a very eclectic design sense. I see beauty in a LOT of different styles. I am not sure what I actually PREFER living in! As I say that, I am remembering that I USED TO HELP PEOPLE DO THIS! I had an initial consultation where I asked people to tell me where they liked to go for a special meal, or to pull four pieces from their wardrobe that made them feel special. I had them tell me how they wanted to feel in their home. And then when focusing on a space or room I would ask them what they wanted or needed to do in that room. So I said ALL that to say…I probably need to be my own client!

I am happy with my interior choices, but made a lot of mistakes along the way. I lean towards old stuff. And I inherited many pieces from family members who passed and no one else wanted these beautiful pieces. A half century later, I have added more antiques tha I bought when I lived in Europe. Tuck in some practical Ikea and I am happy.

Completely agree with the seen it all and liking very little. It's all so ho-hum, big yawn. The matchy-matchy, even in nicer home stores, is so not cool. I've also noticed how sad the super trendy junk can look, plastic inflatable furniture, or squiggles on everything? 😝 I've drifted to Art Deco and Art Nouveau because they are so chic and stylized yet very different from the normal stuff. Also, I've traveled my entire life, so have collected things from everywhere. I love the quiet elegance of varied but NICE things. I haven't been able to pin a name on my style, but that's just fine with me.

I agree with leaning into your setting. My basement (which has exposed cinder block, joists and ducts) was previously painted partly in yellow and had ruffly flowered curtains. We moved to a different state this past year and I went from contemporary to wanting a feeling of light and airy but comfy in this new to me 3b2b ranch home. My style is a mix of craftsman with a tiny side of farmhouse. As I’ve gotten older, less and less farmhouse. I was surprised to find I really did not like a friend’s new modern farmhouse build. Most of my furniture is wood and antique. My walls are just barely yellow. In a new room, completely separate from the rest of the house, I branched out to full on girly- girl art nouveau. With teal! I love it but would not want to be in there all th3 time.

Nick - you are saying - just own it - you are correct. After all Tan had the nerve to say he was preserving the environment building a 12000 sq ft house to AD I think because they recovered some wood for something from a barn somewhere. Can't remember exactly but I think he made up the difference the first month he needed to heat it.

Okay, but what if you have two very conflicting styles that you like? (Or sometimes 3) For instance, I really like dark industrial with brick and metal and rich jewel tones. Which can kind of mix with a dark Victorian aesthetic. Buuuut then I like airy and clean and minimalist with light bamboo and white. My poor home is like "I don't get what you're trying to do to me!!" And I haven't got a budget to be able to change my decor to my moods on a whim.

To me, first, comes a mood. From the building itself . And the meeting with my own style.. Then I consider light (wich includes views on the garden and mountains) and textures. At this moment, i think utilities (circulation, électricity, plumbing, insulation and the way to hide them.) And textures again. (My house is a french stone country house from XVII th century). I work to make the different rooms and spaces cohesives but not similar. For example in each room of my house you can, but don't have to, see stone wall and old piece of wood , but not each room got them in. Each one deserve his mood in my opinion. That's probably why, for part, I don't like fully open spaces. Well, after, time to consider, again, texture. And pieces of art. And rythme between different heights of celling, windows, stairs, larger or smaller spaces, more or kess natural light etc. At this moment shapes come. Then I can think about colors, lightening, furnitures. Time to adjust the whole by.. Did I mentionned textures? (Thxs to excuse my bad english, did my best)

Kinda funny….i live in a historic district (S Fla, so relative) and we built, following all regs but still different. Neighbors struggled with initial form-it is seriously different-but now they’ve convinced us they really do like it. What’s funny is, there are about 10 different “styles” of houses on my little street, and the real estate is high, because people like the individuality, the “character”, and don’t want cookie-cutter neighborhoods.

I don’t know if you’ve already done a video on this subject, but I would be very interested in a video on how to style in a more sustainable eco friendly way! I usually buy things second hand, and like different styles so it can look a little eclectic and not really cohesive… I’d be interested to know about sustainable brands, DIY, upcycling, marketplace or thrifting tips, furniture swaps (is that a thing?) and just advice in general for reducing our environmental footprint when styling and decorating (long term but also even decorating for the seasons and different holidays). Do you think that “greenwashing” is present the interior design field too?

Reminds me of the person who built an English styled Castle in Twin Falls Idaho. He's literally surrounded by fields of potatoes & sugar beets. As for me, my living room is influenced by @NickLewis. My tv console is the same color, the side table is also a darker color like his bar cart. The art is minimal & not mass produced because I don't want that.

My favorite style is British colonial, while the name is problematic i love the mix of traditional meets tropical world travel vibe it gives

Same here! If you haven't heard of it, there's a a lovely old book, British Colonial Style, by Tricia Foley. Alas, beautiful, poetic words are being canceled. See also "oriental".

@@tamjgOriental means eastern. The term emerged as a jargon for people who consider Essex to be the east. It’s not racist. If anything it’s “geocentricism”. 😅

@@stevemcgee99 I've seen it listed with "taboo" words, which I find as despicable as canceling people. Along with "master" bedroom. Recently, someone online took exception to "female".

Oh, i love British Colonial or dutch colonial. I wouldn't excist without the colonial period, as I'm part indonesian. The paranoid PC era is luckily starting to end.

I’m also a British Colonial/Tropical fan. Suits my hot humid climate well.

In my midcentury ranch I dabble in mcm, organic modern, and scandi… but when I learned the term biophile, my design style fell into place. 😂

I just cant seem to shake my table saw in the living room style.

Heh I hear you. For a while, our keywords for the living room were "Granddads furniture", "IKEA", "High end AV", "Spare car parts". And the occasional table saw + half-finished project. We cleaned up rather a lot though... now the place looks like an actual living room without presenting health & safety risks to guests.

Budget. Alas. My 1899 house would actually work nicely with art deco, but I can't afford it so it's more of a moody eclectic. 😕

I've been trying to blend Art Deco(70%) with a bit of MCM(20%) and Cassette Futurism(10%), and I like what I've been able to do so far.

For me color is always first. Which means styles are mixed together randomly in my home, but I feel like they go together because the colors blend nicely. Eclectic?

I decorate my home in Orkcore home design. The Orkcore look is dominated by red, grey, and brown. Brown leather and (natural or lightly stained)brown wood. Grey concrete, grey stone, grey iron, occasionally grey stained wood(I've found that Aged Barrel Mw283 is the best shade of wood stain for this). Red leather, sedona red stained wood, a bit of red trim, red painted roof. Dark ages war/hunting weapons as decorations. Hide rugs. Raw materials and recycled materials such as barnwood. Exposed industrial elements such as large bolts where practical. Pointiness added everywhere it can be done safely, such as pyramid tacks & pointy plants.
