I rode this line today. My uncle drove us to Ashington, we got the train up to Newcastle, had some lunch, got the train to Seaton Delaval, saw the biomass train go through, caught the 3rd of 3 units running the service today back to Ashington, then headed home via several old bits of railway my uncle thought I'd find interesting. I did several stations in West Yorkshire last friday, and Morley has recently been rebuilt with new platforms slightly further north than the original ones. That station also appeared to lack TOC branding.

I have to say that it’s nice to see the Northumberland Line now reopened. Would be nice to see that the line could extend to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea and from Newsham to Blyth so that Northern can introduce more extra trains on the Northumberland Line.

Lovely to see the line reopened. Some of my earliest memories were catching the old train from Monkseaton to the old North Seaton station, previously the stop before Ashington. I cannot quite remember the old steam train, after all I was still in a pram, but I clearly remember the DMUs. Memories!

Really enjoyed your video, I went on a later train from Ashington on Sunday and it was great. One thing you didn't mention is that the line is also included in the metro system as zone D. Means that as well as standard train tickets you can use a pop card and travel for example from Ashington to Sunderland via the metro system for £6.20 capped for the day, this for an adult. Thought it might be useful if anyone does a longer trip 😁

I'm envious of you folks in the UK, you get a brand new rail line regardless of whoever is in government! (Crossrail and Overground under Conservative governments, HS2 started by Conservatives and to be completed by Labour, the new Northumberland Line under Labour, and a new line planned in your North by Labour). Here in the States we have an incoming government that hates rail right on the heels of an outgoing government that worked to expand rail and got a few successes.

I don’t get why they are building a new line and not electrifying it as someone outside of the UK
@dizzy202014 күн бұрын
It's not a new line - it was originally a coal line (the area had 100s of collierys) with some passenger traffic which ended in the 60s - then the coal trains ended with the closure of Blyth Power Station - it's since carried alumina (North Blyth to Fort William) and 'rubbish' to burn at Lynemouth Power Station as well as OCCASIONALLY being used as an ECML diversion (once that was electrified - that stopped being practical tho) Despite it being an active freight line, it's cost £300 MILLION POUNDS just to reopen it with 6 new "1 platform, 2 bins and an LED sign" stations (only 2 of which are opening today) - that's already an obscene sum and it won't remotely make a profit as it has to compete with bus fares so it will require subsidies and -- electrifying it was never realistic or sensible (the line's existence may not even be that)

Blyth is half worth a yrip. Blyth Spartans FC are a great football club if that's your thing. Ever so friendly, always a delight. The town is a bit miss and bit really but you've enough to spend an hour or so between trains.
@1988dgs14 күн бұрын
This was advertised to locals as “we are joining the metro line” giving the impression it would be joining at Northumberland park and stopping at every other metro station, in reality it goes straight to Newcastle central without stopping anywhere else. So a massive expense and inconvenience that doesn’t offer what was advised, we went to Tynemouth, North Shields and Whitley Bay today and if this had done what it said on the tin we could have done that without using the car
@mildertduck14 күн бұрын
When fully open, it will connect with the metro at three places, and currently does at two?
@AlexanderBrassington14 күн бұрын
Couldn't be bothered to get a hotel so got the first train could up to Newcastle and managed to get on the 3rd service. Saw JenOnTheMove. The new stations are pretty generic but for the residents of the line they'll make a huge difference
