While most sopranos (certianly coloraturas) sound like a flute or a wind Instrument - June has the sound of a violin. So many colors and a richeness that was thrilling live in the house. And always the ability to sound as if she were standing right next to you. She gave me many of my best nights in the opera house (Orlando, Puritani).

The violin comparison is interesting. How fortunate you were to see her in Puritani. I saw her at the Met and NYC in just about everything she did there, once in Chicago for her first Norma, and finally in Paris for Nixon in China. She was my pathway into the bel canto repertoire and (obviously from all my clips) a lifetime favorite.

indeed. Anderson’s voice is not violin like except at the top. Sumi Jo’s, Gruberova’s are more like that throughout mostly. Anderson was flutelike had a wind instrument cavernous quality at middle and lower and upper middle range- with a violin like upper extension. Sutherland for instance was quite oboe like and steely at the upper level. Some voices have different qualities at different parts of their voice. Others are more uniformed others are monochromatic .

There are no more stars like this because they don’t leave all out on stage. They’re all safe cookie-cutter versions of what they think they should be. No less talented, but nothing that stands out as a star. All casting directors are doing is creating a vanilla standard. Meade, Oropesa, eh...snooze. What about them is so great? They sound like everyone else...or at least who they think they should sound like. Crocetto, star. Caballe, star. Sutherland, star. Yoncheva, star. Because they’re different.

Oropesa a snooze. Good god man what have you been snorting? Meade is awful and so is most of the Met line up but Oropesa is great both technically and in regard to her acting. Lisette Oropesa has been the only breath of fresh air besides Angel Blue to hit the Met in about 20 years.
