Yeah, sumo wrestlers outside of Japan are kind and friendly... but in Japan... oof, that's a different story. Especially when it comes to relationships between higher ranked rikishi and lower ranked rikishi in the stable. Search for Koji Kitao and how he treated his "servants" who were lower ranked rikishi from his stable. He's the only Yokozuna who never won a tournament. And there's a reason why it happened. He was young and he was close to winning a couple of times before he was promoted to the highest rank... but when he was promoted, he started to feel pressure and he was treating his "servants" wrong and he even had an altercation with his stablemaster that ended in him being thrown out from sumo.

If you understand Japanese and the culture, you can pick up some feedback from Yama san that the translations aren’t capable of express. That comes from a person that’s used to have high quality food all the time. The colab was awesome and thanks to the good work Nick does those kinds of special moments are possible. Keep it up!

Fun fact... Yama is one of several Japanese words meaning "Mountain". In professional sumo in Japan you get a special name to use in the ring.. often these will have some word for "Mountain" in them. Yama is technically retired and had a ring name but he dropped all pretense with retirement and just decided to go with the statement of fact that hes just a damn mountain.

@TheMightySpurdo2 жыл бұрын
I'm japanese and I think Yama san was more confused than excited. You know, wagyu is a japanese word and the literal translation is just "japanese beef". Technically any beef from japan is wagyu so when we see westerners go nuts over wagyu we usually think 1) why are they so excited about japanese beef? Do they not have beef in their country? 2) what the hell is american wagyu supposed to be? Beef that is simultaneously american and japanese?
