Nickelback have some really great deep cuts. Side of a Bullet is actually a song about going back in time and trying to take revenge on the murderer of Dimebag Darrell from Pantera. They actually had permission to use Dimebag’s solo on that song, which I thought was super nice of Pantera to do. And their all time heaviest song Because of You is a straight up banger. And I’ve grown to like the cheesy hits, too; Rockstar I think, was a big influence on the bro country scene, except it doesn’t repulse me like Florida Georgia Line or Jason Aldean, or Blake Shelton, or any of those guys do.

Nickelback also has songs like “Lullaby” which is about self harm and a friend committing suicide and wishing you could have been the one to save them, “Just to Get High” about a a friend who had a drug addiction and watching them destroy their life, and “If Today Was Youth Last Day” about living life to its fullest. As a pretentious music enthusiast, sometimes I find it refreshing to just chill out from all the Radiohead, Deftones and Aphex twin and just listen to some classic pop hits that I remember from my childhood. One of my go to songs for these kind of moments are "the reason" by hoobastank (God, what a great band name). It's catchy, easy to listen to, and now with time, it becomes nostalgic. And yes, I know this video is talking about Nickelback in particular, but as a Malaysian, I've never been exposed to Nickelback as much as Americans and Canadians did. Though I definitely remembered hearing them once in a while on the radio, back then and even recently. But I think the point that I'm trying to make here is somewhat related to the topic. And that is that, sometimes it's good to take a break from our seriousness of music and just chill out for a moment...

Nickelback are far from my favorite band, but I do unironically enjoy them every once in a while. I think the overall "post-grunge" label hurt them a bit, and the fact that Photograph got over saturated made matters worse. They´re fine, they know what they´re doing, they seem to be pretty good live from the clips I´ve seen, and as much as it gets made fun of, Chad´s voice (at least in the early 2000s) is really good. That rasp is great for rock.

As someone who owns a good chunk of their records, I definitely agree that Nickelback is a good band that I think gets a bad rep. No Fixed Address is an album that shouldn't work nearly enough as it does given their amount of experimentation, but songs like She Keeps Me Up and Million Miles an Hour are still bangers. Though I do gotta make a correction for the Hero segment as that technically isn't a Nickelback song. It's a Chad Kroeger solo song with members of other bands like Theory of a Deadman and such. Disagree with your conclusion, but good job with this video. I think Chad Kroger and Tom Brien's quotes REALLY point to the reason they're hated: "How You Remind Me" is a boring interpretation of 90's alt rock AND it was everywhere. Personally, i found it the most forgetable song ever. Despite watching MTV obsessively, my friend would reference it, and I had NO IDEA what song she was talking about. There were other songs i disliked that got constant airplay: "One Week" by Barenaked Ladies and "Run Around" by Blues Traveler, but these songs aren't boring, they're annoying, which means that with their hits BNL and BT took risks by doing something that, to me and others, is sonically off-putting, and I can respect that. "How You Remind Me," didn't really do anything like that. It's just bland, middle of the road, and reminiscent of beloved bands that weren't bland or middle of road. But great video, nonetheless! It takes chutzpah to identify as a Nickelback fan these days!

Their instrumentalists are actually playing instead of relying on backing tracks (I’m about to lose track of how many bass lines I’ve heard that are backing tracks). Now they’re at the point where they can play an entire concert with songs that are known. Saw them last month and they were quite impressive and entertaining.

And while I think the term "Butt Rock" is hilarious and well deserved, I still like many bands who would be considered Butt Rock. But I am disgusted that Disturbed and Linkin Park are listed anywhere near the idea of Butt Rock. I agree with Chad Kroeger mentioning comedians. The wave of hate seemed to really amp up after a sound bit from Comedy Central stating that they sucked started playing on rotation between every show and commercial. Really, people just love to shit on other people having fun with and loving what they do. Also, if you haven't heard the sea shanty version of Rockstar, you are missing out.

You have no idea what over-played is... living in Canada when these guys were at the height of their fame meant you could not work a part-time job in retail without listening to them every. single. day. You could not turn on MTV (Canada) and not hear one of their songs every hour. You could not escape it.. so it became milk-toast. It became the bi-word for bland and uninspired. They weren't bad songs but they were there whether you wanted them to be or not. Edit: CRTC is the governing body in Canada over radio and television... and they mandate that 30% of all media must be Canadian.. so guess what, I heard a lot of Simple Plan (which, no complaints), Nickelback and Avril Lavigne... and nobody but the Canadian public loathed it more when they hooked up... it is still a sore-spot for me whenever I think about it.. it's like Christmas music in October.

Though I maybe don't hate them quite as intensely as I used to, my hatred of Nickelback is admittedly much more deep-seated and personal than a lot of others'. I'm from the same Canadian province as them (Alberta), and I grew up in Calgary, roughly two hours or so away from their small hometown of Hanna. Since I grew up there during the height of Nickelback's popularity in the 2000s, this meant hearing their songs nonstop on EVERY radio format imaginable in Calgary (pop, adult contemporary, butt rock etc) because of Canadian content bylaws and hometown/provincial pride for lots of people. I was also bullied heavily in junior high school by a couple boys who were big Nickelback fans. Furthermore, Nickelback seem to represent so many of the worst outsider stereotypes about the province of Alberta - conservative, misogynistic, alpha male douchebag dudebros who love oil and gas, Stephen Harper (our former conservative Prime Minister who also called Calgary home) and pickup trucks - that so many people in my hometown have been trying to escape for a while now. In fact, there are so many Joy Division-esque post-punk bands in Calgary who've emerged over the last decade or so (Preoccupations and Sunglaciers are two good examples worth checking out, if you're not familiar), ostensibly as a reaction to bands like Nickelback. This is without even mentioning how similar their songs sound and how little artistic depth they seem to have (or Chad's embarrassing haircuts)! So while I understand why they're getting reevaluated a certain way years after the fact (admittedly, some of the hate they got was a bit much even for them), and they seem like friendly-enough dudes in interviews (e.g. their recent one with Nardwuar), there's still plenty of room for criticism with them.
