Nickelodeon: What Happened?

My stance is not going to be a popular one, but I believe that though I love the prior decade of Nickelodeon, there is no doubt that the channel is surviving with less.

P0CK3TB00K the reasons why the pre-2008 shows were awesome was because there was a different management and different CEO (until 2006) who actually cared about the show’s creativity while also caring about money at the same time. Also, Spongebob is starting to air less often (and Seasons 1-3 barely air on the main network)

My favorite quote from this video: "Cartoon Network vs. Nickelodeon was a REAL competition in the middle of the 2000s and all who grew up knew it. You could switch to both and find something enjoyable on..." This sums up a lot of how I feel about that era. There was always heat over whether Nick or CN were better, and no matter what time of day you tuned in, there'd be something awesome on both channels and it would be so hard to decide which one to watch. I also strongly connect with the new Nick logo bit at the end. Late 2009 is when the change happened and it truly was a change for the worse. It took seven years for them to dig out of that with the Loud House, in my opinion, so I'm curious where Nick will take it from here, but that logo will always remind me of basically when my childhood ended.

What happened was they stopped believing in and backing their nicktoons as a brand, and as art, and only pushed what was most popular or what made the most money. They didn't give new nicktoons a chance to really even get established with the viewer before yanking it off air. They threw away a lot of good shows. The only thing that saves them is the fact that they do live action too. Nicktoons are all but dead, as a brand. That's why they play up the nostalgia now.

This is a problem plaguing a lot of companies like Nick, Cartoon Network, Disney Channel, etc. that isn't even entirely their fault: the shorter attention span of kids these days and the rise of technology. These 2 problems actually go hand in hand. See back in the 90s and early 2000s companies like Nick and CN had more of a reason to invest in high quality and entertaining shows since the internet wasn't that wide spread and social media was basically non existent. This means that kids had to go to these networks to watch entertaining shows and thus would watch the channel that was more entertaining or more high quality. It was just these kid based network shows just fighting each other. Now with the rise of the internet along with video sharing websites like KZbin, Facebook, etc, and just websites where you can watch cartoons for free at anytime without commercials and anywhere thanks to tablets, ipads, smartphones, etc. there is little to no need to even go to Nick or CN. Kids today are spoiled in the fact that they have multiple ways to watch cartoons from television networks along with original shows you would never see on TV do to one reason or another. This goes back to my "kids having shorter attention spans" claim as I've noticed with a lot of kids (especially my nieces and nephews) that they would rather watch funny videos on KZbin and watch cartoons on their tablets and phones than sit in front of a TV and wait for a particular show to come on because with their devices they can easily click off something they get bored with and find something immediately they like unlike TV. This is why a lot of shows are in flash, CGI, and a lot of live action sitcoms these days instead of traditional drawing because companies can't afford to spend money on traditional drawn shows if they weren't 100% certain that it would succeed. Sadly as technology rises I don't see this problem going away. In fact I can see a time where cartoon based channels become obsolete. Heck television itself is slowly becoming a thing of the past.

Here's the issues with the 3 channels Nickelodeon: there as he said trying and are the most consistent of the other channels to release animated shows, however it still prefers live action shows. Cartoon Network: oh boy where to start. Bad. Basically all of it being shown is bad. There are a few shows, but the problem is that there all buried under an unimaginable amount of teen titans go. Disney channel: there problem is that they don't want to show there good stuff. Hidden on Disney XD are a good amount of animated shows that are sadly only on the main channel rarely. They need to show them instead of hiding them in the background so we get to see them

James Vixen Like The Splat, but as a separate channel rather than a programming block. I watch The Splat a few nights a week, and it's already getting repetitive. This is not necessary when Nick has a HUGE vault full of programming! The Splat as a channel could use shows from Nick Jr. (Pinwheel, Today's Special, Maya the Bee) in the early daytime hours, Golden Age Nicktoons in the afternoon, and SNICK with other live action shows at night. There are also many Nickelodeon original movies that haven't aired in years!

bob smith The Splat seems focused on '90s nostalgia with its current Nicktoons line up (CatDog, Doug, Hey Arnold, Rugrats, Rocko's Modern Life). Even with these long running series, The Splat only chooses to show the same few episodes over and over. And there are some great shows from the early aughts that have been entirely neglected (Invader ZIM comes to mind). I completely agree with you except I actually really enjoyed tuff puppy, I think that Nick and Cartoon Network are both killing themselves with crappy stuff, the loud house is good, it's like the only good thing on nick, on cartoon network they have adventure time, a good show, regular show, a good show, and we bare bears, good show and also gumball which is also a good show, but then they have the crappiest show to ever hit cartoon network, teen titans go. Back in the day I watched the original teen titans, it was awesome, and when i heard they were rebooting it i was super excited but then what came to existence was one of the worst disappointments of all time. The worst part is is that the younger kids of today (I'm nearly 16 btw) think this stuff is good! I honestly can't stand what tv has become, that is why I use youtube and netflix for everything.

There definitely is a lower quality standard in a lot of cartoons on the mainstream animation networks (Nick, CN). There are still hidden gems, but it's nothing like where we were a decade ago. Tuff Puppy was a cool series. I didn't mean to make it sound awful, viewership just wasn't there for that series.

actually the mid-90's wasn't the heyday period for Nickelodeon. If anything, it was the late-80's/early-90's that was the heyday period, which was good until the early two 2000s and then started to decline. Even most of the Nicktoons that you mentioned were from the early 90's

Of course they could not get away with airing old R&S episodes, they're way too raunchy for that, maybe if The Splat had a YT arm, then with it being a web-based arm, they would theoretically be unlimited as far as censorship with what they can show in comparison to cable, which while offering more freedom than broadcast network TV, still has more censorship-based restrictions than the web does.

Nickelodeon as well as Cartoon Network and Disney Channel are all dead. They started going downhill in 2009 and died in 2013, due to horrible show after horrible show. Everyone quit watching them and switched to watching Netflix. This proved that broadcast live TV is obsolete. Nickelodeon the studio is still going strong, it’s just the channel that’s dead. However nowadays, it’s Netflix that’s dead because the three channels that it killed have retaliated by making their own streaming channels, Disney+, HBO Max and Paramount+. They’re currently giving Netflix a taste of its own medicine. That’s what I call Karma. Paramount+ is Nickelodeon’s successor. It’s living on through it.

The main character (Bessy, if I'm not wrong) was terribly annoying, along with most of the other characters. Most of the episodes had uncomfortable character's expression designs, like if they were intended to be gross, and the plot line of the series were dull. Also, as I'm from Latin America, LA voice dub for Bessy and this blond girl (can't remember her name) were seriously cringey. The worst of all is that this series premiered at the same time as Fanboy and Chum Chum (in Latin America, again), and I had to watch both of them in order to catch up with Season 1 of Jimmy Two-Shoes that had premiered on Nickelodeon over here since the channel was a mess in terms of timing (and still is).

I stopped watching Nickelodeon after I Carly ended to me the network started going down hill in 2010 when they had crappy sitcoms like victorious and Sam and Cat and I briefly watched the network a while ago when there wasn’t anything on and I noticed that they had repeats of old shows like Rockos modern life , old live action sitcoms , Sponge Bob and hey Arnold and it was good to see the old cartoons again and some of the live action shows it was good that they were airing old shows but they aired them at night from 5pm - 12am and it was mainly sponge bob and they aired the modern shows during the day and there’s a lot of bad shows and way too much Sponge Bob still but the schedule is still better than Cartoon Networks even though the channel isn’t good anymore it’s just okay
