My torque converter bolts come loose all the time and it sounds like knocking under load even with loctite I've tried medium and high strength and this last time I used hi temp hi strength. I have a 92 cherokee. Im running brown dog offroad motor mounts and there brackets, they aren't solid but they are close to solid and I think maybe the vibrations help loosen the bolts i haven't had any noise or knocking at all from anywhere once i tighten the bolts. I've started checking on them often since ive been driving it a lot lately. The bolt holes are ovaled out pretty bad ill be replacing the flex plate next time its out. I also checked my wifes cherokee and hers had one loose bolt i think it's worth checking periodically as regular maintenance especially if you have aftermarket motor mounts.

After watching this video and the house alternator vid I remembered an argument I had with a guy at AutoZone a few weeks back. The alternator for the jeep is different than the replacement part you get from the parts store. The lowest mounting point of the replacement alt is about 1.2 mms wider on the backside and doesn't fit. Looking at the msg boards other jeep owners complained that it was difficult to install without identifying the cause. The argument I had with the guy at AutoZone is that he said there was a problem with my truck. My argument was that I had an '89 comanche and now a '90 comanche. A while ago I physically removed the alt from the truck and brought it to AutoZone. I showed it to them and they said it was the same, but after pulling out a micrometer there was clearly a 1.2 mm difference. So has anybody found anybody who sells the correct alt, there's nobody where I live currently who reminds alts.

I replaced the Torx bolts when i pulled the transmission out. I also bought a harbor freight tap and die set. That way if i needed to add more threads to my bolts, like yours where the top sleeve part is, i could. it came in very handy for a few issues i had getting my XJ back together. You probably should have fixed that oil pan leak when you had the tranny out. :P

Yo. I think I've got the same thing going on in my 4.0 swapped Comanche. When this was happening, did you feel increased vibration in the cabin from the cracked plate? I'm guessing mine is either warped, or cracked, but I wasn't sure if that would add vibrations into the cabin. Good video btw.
@NickInTimeFilms4 жыл бұрын
Might be worth checking if all your transmission bolts are still tight, Pretty sure mine cracked because a few were loose or missing.

Hey nick! Your video finally helped me diagnose the lower end noise I was hearing and could never figure out. Like you the flexplate on my 98 was completely cracked all the way around and wouldn't have survived much longer. But hey I have a question for you. I have everything put back together now and I'm having some issues. Primarily a p1391 CPS CEL. Replaced with a new one today (Napa echlin) and no dice. Rough idle and spits and sputters. Could this be due to the flexplate? I'm running out of things to check. Appreciate any help.
@NickInTimeFilms4 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming you bought the correct flexplate for your year? They've changed over the years so you want to make sure you've got the right one. Aftermarket may have been timed wrong. Was there anything else you did to this engine, or just pulled it to swap the flexplate?

Mine on my Comanche has the same symptoms but it randomly started stalling not long before it started knocking. Thinking it being cracked is goofing with the CPS causing to to lose spark and stall. What you you think Nick?
@NickInTimeFilms5 жыл бұрын
Could be possible. Might be worth checking if all your transmission bolts are still tight, could be pulling the flex plate out of alignment from the CPS
@emilruiz56324 жыл бұрын
When you first were having issues with the torque converter spinning with the flexplate were you not worried about correct spacing between the flexplate and torque converter for expansion? Will this not damage the transmission pump without having any space?
@emilruiz56324 жыл бұрын
Curious because I just threw in my motor and am having that same thing happen. I was told that it will cause issues and that I must have not installed it correctly
@NickInTimeFilms4 жыл бұрын
Since the flex plate is bolted to the engine, all the spacing is done by the bell housing when it's bolted to the engine. The torque converter gets sucked in tight to the flexplate when it's bolted down, that's just how it sits
@emilruiz56324 жыл бұрын
@@NickInTimeFilms when you installed the transmission I assume you set the torque converter all the way back seated as far as it would go into the pump? If that's the case when you bolted it back to the motor the space/gap would be in between the flexplate before bolting it on. Then the gap would be at the pump. But when you went to bolt it onto the flex plate it was flush against it causing it to turn with the motor. That is where I am confused. Right now that is exactly where I am at with my motor.

If you EVER split the engine/tranny, ALWAY do the rear main seal. Judging by all the oil on the engine pan, and the fact that you have a 4.0, that seal is as effective as a sock. It's worthe the $10 not to have to do that job twice... My 2 cents.
