People who draw a check from the government cannot pay rent because they only get about $790.00 a month. Either live with someone or go homeless, no. way around it. Then they will not give out section8 Government Housing, a waiting lottery and if they have a police record. They are out period of help. It is awful because people can change and do better but what do they do if a place is not left to them. Go Homeless . It's the new normal til the government changes it. I'm Disabled, a Veteran, and have been homeless for two years. I'm not a drug addict, just lost my housing two years ago when the apartment complex I was living at in Mesa Arizona was sold to a buyer in Toronto, who promptly notified the tenants living with Section 8 or VASH assistance they had the option to move out or pay full market value rent without assistance. I found while looking for a place to move to, that most low income housing in my area was eliminated in this same fashion by greedy investors and was unavailable to find another place to live. I bought an old van on payments and was forced to start living in it. I did so for a year and was offered a tiny fiberglass trailer on payments. I found that the person I bought it from had mislead me on a clear title, and have had difficulty getting it registered and legal to tow. I have been stranded at a Recreation Area, above Kingman Arizona for seven months now trying to get repairs done to my van. It is no longer safe to drive, and definitely not suitable to tow my trailer. It has been a living hell, upto 128 degrees at times this summer, now dealing with freezing cold at night and heavy winds. Every time I try to get some repairs made, something comes up. I bought a used generator which failed in a couple weeks, had to buy another one, then my emotional support dog Archie was badly bitten and required veterinary care, my air conditioning compressor failed in my Van, I cut my knuckle to the bone and ligaments on some glass discarding some trash which resulted in an Emergency Room Visit. I have been trying to get help, and have not had much success. I was accepted for PATH Rapid Rehousing through the Catholic Charities, but have searched all over Mohave County but found I cannot afford an apartment on my disability income. I have been looking for a room for rent, but no luck. So now I'm in a panic as I was notified by the Catholic Charities Caseworker handling my information, had their computer stolen and now my personal information has been compromised. I am on a waiting list for Section 8, basically started over. I did not choose to be in this homeless situation, and have been doing my best to deal with everything I have experienced the past 2 years. I had to literally give everything I owned away when I lost my apartment EVERYTHING!, I did try and keep my many tools, but those to were lost to a "friend" who was going but keep them until I get settled, but would never respond to my calls or texts. I am absolutely sick of my life. I don't live anymore, I merely exist, and it's not much of an existence at that. I have not showered in nearly 8 months, and haven't bathed in over two years since losing my apartment. My teeth are broken, many missing, and I broke another one recently, not looking forward to the toothache that's coming. I am nearly blind in one eye and can only see clearly with glasses, but I lost one of the lenses. I have reached out to every VA organization or service center I know of for help, but am ineligible. I worked for the Air Force starting my senior year of high school, as a civilian employee and for the next decade. I also simultaneously served 6 years in the Air National Guard, and was honorably discharged, but still don't meet the requirements as I was on active duty for well over a year with Avionics Technical School, and was activated during Desert Storm, but could not deploy with my unit, as I was a 3 level technician straight out of school. I have no family for support, no friends, only a few people I have met while being homeless. I have had a fellow vet brings some water bottles and food items several months back, and just today was given a propane tank, heavy sleeping bag, and nice winter coat by Catholic charities, these were definitely a blessing and will definitely help, but I don't see how I can ever get out of my situation as my limited income doesn't suffice to handle the many needs I currently have trying to get out of my homeless situation along with handling my major dental problems, lack now of a safe vehicle, and trailer registration. Any day the area I am staying may be closed, the BLM Rangers have told me they plan to close access to this Recreation Area soon. I will be in an Emergency Situation when they do, and have no idea yet what I will do .

Then I flew back to Dallas where I'm from. Now, Dallas has homeless people too, but the weather here keeps it to a minimum (way too hot in the summer, and freezing cold in the winter, not much nice weather in between). Also the city of Dallas is pretty good at "re-landscaping" areas under bridges with giant sharp-edged boulders to keep bums from pitching tents there.

I think it’s many American cities, but the ones in California do seem particularly bad. Even small cities like Denver and Cincinnati have a lot of homelessness smack in downtown. Here in Chicago we have our fair share, but the city that gets such a bad rep in this country, is actually a lot cleaner and has less examples of tent homelessness than a lot of other cities I’ve been too. We have some homeless people in corners with signs downtown, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tent.. let alone multiple or entire streets. If you go to the neighborhoods, you can sometimes see tents or people who set up camp at a bus station... but again, not nearly anything like the above cities or LA.

You do realize those moratoriums on evictions actually made the evictions worse. If the moratoriums didn't exist, most good renters could have probably renegotiated their rent due to hardship. Most landlords understood that during covid it was unlikely they would find new renters so it was beneficial for them to agree to reduce the price temporarily to keep good renters. Now in the end the rent is paid up, tenants credit is good, still a good relationship between tenant and landlord. The moratorium caused tenants to simply stop paying. Now the tenant is so far behind on rent there is no way they can catch up, they will be evicted for sure, their credit is ruined, it will be hard to find a new place as they have a bad rental history, and the landlord will sue for the money owed. Also, the moratoriums will reduce the number of rentals available. Who would want to own a rental when they know the government can come in and force you to house someone while receiving no money. In Washington the landlord can even be forced to pay for utilities. Put yourself in the landlords shoes. A drop in supply of rental properties will mean and increase in price. Supply and demand. Whenever politicians want to pass some great sounding piece of legislation, make sure you look at it from all perspectives and think about the unintended consequences.

It's full of drug addicts and homeless people !" Go figure! All big city problems shine a magnifying glass on humanities problems. To allow the problem to grow this big reekes of entrenched corruption. If I was elected to high office in California, the very first thing I would do would be to sack the public service en masse. @Margo Ledbetter California has a lot of homeless because of the weather. But the reason the country has homeless people is because of rich people. It's national policy... We can pretend it's states fault or the fault of the people who've been forced out of the economy by government action. But the reality is that homelessness is due to our national government spending money on war instead of infrastructure. It's because people like Buffet and Trump sent jobs overseas along with our production capacity. Capitalism doesn't work to lift everyone. What a shock... we've known this for a hundred years.

@meganreyes51113 жыл бұрын
I was homeless at one point and time. It was my husband, myself, and my dog. We were all living in one car along with all of our backpacks and things we had. But my homelessness wasn't because of drugs, or that I had gotten evicted. Although, with absolutely $0 in our pockets, deciding to leave all the stress away at home, we traveled in a car across the US during a pandemic. I have to say the trip definitely wasn't easy. Being on the streets you'd have to deal with a variety of obstacles: finding changes of clothes, CLEAN socks were such an issue and sometimes you'd have to resort to stealing food... Altogether with not being able to shower up until you panhandled for enough money to get a night's stay at a cheap motel.. It was hard to keep up hygiene, and I myself like to keep very clean when I can. Luckily we weren't without a car, so we were mobile fortunately safer with the whip than out on the street. But having to sleep in a car brought along a whole other set of issues- police, nosy people, and crackheads all at once, so my advice to anyone sleeping in their car right now - park and rides are your best friend. Don't stay at Walmart parking lots. You could either get kicked out or encounter people trying to rob you. Also, try to always carry around pepper spray with you just in case. I remember my husband ended up finding a job up in Sacramento, CA at a restaurant. The employer was so understanding about the situation, but get ready for a rough patch of 2 weeks. Unfortunately we weren't able to keep the job. But to all employers - give the homeless a chance. And to all people who might encounter someone asking for spare change - Don't be afraid to give. It could really help someone out, and in most cases that money isn't going directly to drugs or alcohol if its someone who actually wants the help. I am now writing this in my own house with my husband and dog. I have never felt more proud to have my own little spot. But I never forget all those people who helped me get through living in my car. I hope if you are reading this and you are considered homeless, remember to stay strong and don't give in. God bless whoever is reading this, stay safe!
