What type of modeller are you - what is your passion when it comes to this hobby?
I had another realisation that I really don't want to be spending all my time superdetailing and working on uber-complex kits, that my passion is getting them into the air, painting them and making a really dynamic display!
So the Academy CH-53E is going on pause - again - while I try to dabble in my almost finished and much simpler aircraft kits between now and mid-August, stay along for the ride!

I just started building again, after 40 years. It‘s not about the finished kit for me, but the process. I needed something to calm me, get me into a flow, make me focus and forget everything else for a few hours. I enjoy the learning process. Making models is just perfect for this.

Hi Chris, I build my kits to a factory fresh standard, very little weathering and most of my kits are out of the box builds, don't get me wrong, I do like other modellers skills, but that's not for me, been in this hobby for just over 50 yrs, still love it as much as I did when I first got into it, I build my kits to where I'm happy with them, and at the end of the day that's all that matters to me, I don't really care if the kit isn't 100% accurate, I'm in this hobby for the pleasure of building kits.

I've been building mostly AFVs since I returned to modelling about twelve years ago. As with yourself, I've been sticking to the 'just out of the factory' look as weathering is a skill I've yet to tackle in any degree. Also, I'm not bothered about specific historical accuracy, as it's my model, my finish - ! 😅

For me it is, I’ve learned to do all sorts of things in life, but with children and a demanding job I just don’t have time to really pursue those things anymore. I enjoy this hobby for several reasons, one of which being I can work on it when I have time and put it away when needed. I honestly don’t care much about the completed work either, I usually just give them to my son and plays with them.

You are so correct on your message. Do it the way you want to. Do it however as long as it brings you joy. I threw together an old 80s f-16...painted the inside canopy black...gear up...and went to town on the final paint job. It was a ton of fun to finish a wheels up kit and have a model that I build as a kid to do over again only better this time. So...great video with a great message. Cheers. 👍💙

Your earlier video posing this question inspired me to think about my building - I'm only just back into the hobby after many years and like you, have a stressful job that doesn't allow me as much time to build as I'd like. So I'm now looking at two tracks - 1/72 scale, cockpit closed, pretty much out of the box (based around a couple of themes to limit the stash!), maybe one or two a month and concurrently, a larger scale project that I can have a play with detailing but not get bogged down on which will probably be no more than a couple a year. Good to see you revved up and enjoying what you do.
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels Жыл бұрын
That is a fantastic strategy and in fact I did something similar this past week, starting two 1/72 kits (the Revell Horten flying wing) and the 1/72 Arma Mustang, and they went together within a few hours to the priming/cockpit stage, straight out of the box. So cathartic!
@FinsburyPhil
@FinsburyPhil Жыл бұрын
@@beckersmodels Cheers Chris. I enjoyed my first couple of models, where I tried many of the techniques that I'd seen on channels such as yours, Doogs, Will Pattison, Primedmodelworks. I then threw a lot of aftermarket at the cockpit of a 1/72 Spitfire and whilst I enjoyed the challenge, it took me ages and of course in the end I couldn't see 90% of the work. I realised that if I carried on at that rate, things that I really want to do - like a series of RAF 19 Sqn planes from 1915 to 2005 would take years - my epiphany coincided with your first 'what type of modeller are you' which made me stop and think. It was one of two important videos - the other being one by Jon Bius (whilst he was still making aircraft) which went along the lines of, 'stop thinking so much and just get on and build something'. At that point I'd probably watch hundreds of hours of KZbin videos and spent god knows how much on tools - and had barely built anything!
@HammerheadModelMaking
@HammerheadModelMaking Жыл бұрын
I'm glad for your epiphany, one can tell from your voice your renewed excitement. I agree with much that you've said regarding building models the way you want, I think we need more discussion among the community about gatekeeping, you briefly touched upon it, but it can be really difficult for new/young modelers to break into the hobby when the "old guard" seems so resistant to whats new. Anyways, cheers and enjoyed the video. -Brett
@beckersmodels

Thanks Brett. There's definitely two sides to the gatekeeping debate - there is something to be said for preserving certain aspects of the hobby, or at least recognising that you can have a wider umbrella. I dont think plastic modelling is going to suffer the fate of other hobbies or fandoms where it can be taken over and ruined by toxic views/methods etc, cheers Chris

Whatever you do in this amazing hobby we have you do it how you want to, try what you want to etc. I've my own foibles, there is one scale I have a particular distaste for and don't do. I know some times I'm a bit of a rivet counter and on other occasions I'll build straight from the box and other times I'll WHIFF. I love building old Airfix and Revell kits Out Of the Box using the originally specified paints and colours, accurate or not. Super video and really enjoyed hearing what it is about the hobby that you love doing with it - I completely agree it isn't a one-size-fits-all hobby like some seem to think it is - it straddles between historical and artistic and a modeller can position themselves wherever they feel is right across that spectrum! I had a similar epiphany moment about three months ago too. I used to churn a lot of kits out and while it was okay, I wasn't captivated by it and I realised this as I was building the 1/48 Airfix English Electric Lightning F.1A. During the Winter though, I had spent some time super-detailing the 1/48 HK B-17F, doing the engines and the very forward nose and absolutely loved making the model "my own" rather than just what came in the box. I then started the 1/32 Meng Fokker DR.I and just again thoroughly enjoyed detailing it up with the wiring/rigging, and realised that this was what I enjoyed about the hobby. So I have gone in an opposite direction to you; but that doesn't matter, it is these differences that make the hobby interesting, and at the end of the day so long as we enjoy doing it, that is the most important thing! Hope the recovery from your cancer is going well - take care, stay healthy and look forward to some future videos!

When I built as a kid in the 80s, my paint and brushes were minimal. I had 1 local hobby shop with Testors enamels and brushes, so that’s all I used. Always wanted an airbrush so I have 2 now, and getting deep into the painting part of it. Now I’m really enjoying weathering with oils over acrylic. As a kid I liked assembly more as my hands were steady and eyes were sharp! Now small parts give me minor panic attacks as I know if I drop it I’ll probably never find it again.

Hi Chris, good to hear from you again. I can only say hear, hear. You've absolutely said it right. To answer your question, What sort of modeller am I? Well one who hasn't done it for years and about to have another go. I'm in the "stash and tools" phase (ie getting stuff together). What I want to do this time I can sum up as something interesting. I don't want to hyper detail, certainly not pick out the panel lines, but I do want it right, and to look right. I have a wrough plan, a Lighting taking off with the landing gear coming up, an Me109 force landed with a Home Guard on guard, a number of AC in the hanger with varying levels of repair/maintenance and mechanics working hard, perhaps something in a museum with visitors clustered around, something different...... I'm sure there will be others. One thing I always did enjoy was convertions. We didn't have so much choice then, so often if you wanted it you had to convert. I do agree with you that we should all approach it in a way that will give us the most pleasure and not care too much what anyone else thinks. Its too big for me but I think Myriaa (AN225) would look interesting with Buran on top. I saw Myriaa at Farnborough years ago and it was impressively big. I hope they do rebuild it (finish the second?) after that stupid war is over. PS, your dictionary definition had me laughing. We need more of that.

My ears must have been burning or something. I got home from work and this video was at the top of my feed. Throughout the entire video I'm listening to you but in my head I'm hearing me. I've been saying these exact things for more than a decade on my channel. I like to say that there's room at the table for everyone. The only thing that I would add is that the type of modeller that you are will change over time. Or at least it has for me. I've kind of gone full circle starting from simplistic out of the box builds, to multiple aftermarket additions, to "LEGO" super kits, and back to simple out of the box builds. The overall look is really what I'm interested in anymore. I could care less about miniscule details. And I'm certainly not wasting time on things that aren't going to be seen when viewing the model as a whole.
@beckersmodels

Heh heh - Ive done that full circle too, I think I've recycled my stash twice doing that circle work and I will probably offload some big "projects" soon too that I know I'll never tackle and just focus on out of the box stuff that can be built without much fuss. Cheers Chris

An intriguing question. In my experience, it fluctuates. Outlining goals prior to starting ends up defining what kind of modeler I will be on a particular kit. With time and experience, that may change. As of now, some models I am focused on building more than painting, and others might be the opposite. Sometimes the kit dictates the goals; I am not interested in "fighting" anything in this hobby.
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels Жыл бұрын
Yep its the fighting - I really don't like having a kit that fights me, its just the way I'm wired, some modellers love that sort of challenge!

I have come to a realisation too. I have been building large projects now for ever - big worthy kits that are intricate to build, paint and decal not to mention research. Whilst building this type of kit I having been making 1/72 aircraft kits out of the box- made painted and with decals within 2/3 weeks. Without realising I have more of these kits built now than the big all singing all dancing kits that are being built at a glacial pace. What's more I enjoy the 1/72 aircraft much more. So there it is - I will stop effing about and just make the ones I enjoy. Simple really isn't it?

It is simple when it boils down to that - I have two 1/72 kits (if you watched til the end) ready to paint the cockpit and all parts ready for final assembly, done in the same time I spent doing one round of wiring on that bloody rotorhead! I mainly model Science Fiction subjects. You'd have thought that there would be less rivet counting but it's across all subjects I think. I build my models for me, I'm old enough to not give a $*** what anyone else thinks. I like to light them and I also display them in flight. It's so easy to get bogged down trying to replicate every paint chip and oil /rust stain, especially on Star Wars kits. So now I go for the overall look. If it looks good enough to me. Then it's good enough.

I three years, I’ve completed about 20 kits. I find modeling painful in that I’m rarely satisfied with the results. I marvel at the skill level of people like you and Doogs, and other KZbinrs. I have an Academy MH-53E kit that will continue to sit for a lot of the same reasons yours is going back into the box. Definitely take a thought about what you want to do before going out and buying EVERYTHING. I did the same thing with paints/weathering stuff before I realised I only needed a handful of washes and oil paints. Same with aftermarket for detailing - about the only thing I'm getting for my aircraft kits now are pilots, canopy masks and maybe a replacement instrument panel.... The best way to forestall this is to buy some better kits! The new Academy 1/48 Zero has canopy masks and a pilot included - you don't need aftermarket!

The 3D decal revolution is here and I'm loving it - but I think its only appropriate for modern jets with big canopies, like the A-6 Intruder or F/A-18s etc, but probably not for WW2 cockpit - just a Yahu panel is likely, since they are so closed in - particularly with a pilot - you wont see a bloody thing! Well said, Chris! The thing I love about this hobby is the freedom to do what you like - and that will vary a lot from kit to kit. some kits want to be detailed up, others are just fine as they are. I love the “What if” creativity some people have done - such as decaling a Colonial viper with the VFA-103 Jolly Roger’s on it! There are so many ways to approach our hobby, and at the end of the day if you had fun with it, then it was time well spent. I am surprised however with how many kits you have at various stages of completion! I can’t track more than two kits at any given time, and my OCD prevents me from leaving a kit unfinished for too long! 😀

@@beckersmodels I would say that it has gotten better over the years. As a kid I did not have access or even know about better tools and techniques, but there have been so many advances in just the last thirty years. When I started, there were stores in every town that carried models and now I am forced to order everything online with no other options in my area, so that is not really a good change, but the variety of kits, paints, tools, and detail parts are incredible today.

This video should be shown to all new members of model clubs throughout the world. It's easy for others to impose their modelling ideologies on the nascent modeller, sometimes to huge detriment. Personally, I love to build 1/144 and 1/72 in wheels up, with the occasional 1/48 on a basic base, or maybe a small diorama. I still feel the "it's not a serious model" when an "in flight" model is displayed, and the viewer has no idea of the work that has gone into it.

I haven't got up the reentry learning curve has fast as I wanted but its happening. Big problem is I do have a really good large vintage stash, but keep buying new kits - its that addiction you talked about a while back. My favorite part is paint and weathering, but I don't like to go crazy on the weathering. I think a lot of modelers are so good with the weathering that they tend take it too far and the models can become over done. I like to use light to moderate weathering that's done just right. Also, I alternate from one kit to the next between aircraft and armor. I don't like to stay in one area too much. I find that switching back and forth keeps things a little bit fresher and keeps the skill set sharp. Also, I don't build in anything smaller than 1/32. The older I get, the less patience I have for the fiddly bits that are so common in some 1/48 kits and a lot of 1/72 kits. Lastly....big pet peeve is poorly fitting kits. Life's too short to be dealing with wonky seams. I would much rather get the build done and get on to paint and weathering.

Not much into scratchbuilding or rescribing panel lines, but I'm entertaining some resin accessories and such. Just finished an Accurate Miniatures 1:48 TBM-1C Avenger that I started 2.5 years ago; I seem to lose motivation easily. Just started (today in fact) a Hasegawa 1:48 A-4M Skyhawk. Wanting to do it landing aboard a carrier... Gear down, flaps down, hook down, but maybe just one Main Gear touching? I'll have to scratch build a new oleo strut from metal rod to hold the weight of the finished model, but I think I can do it. Still trying to locate a pilot figure as well. Gotta have that! I hope you're doing well and have beat cancer. Peace and love.

I would like to add another one. Those that build for wargaming. Usually they do not build to tournament level. At club level as long as the green is roughly the right green and the brown is roughly the right shade on tanks you are OK. Unit marking are considered a bonus. For tournaments people try harder and generally get the colours right and unit marking right. However as long as it looks the part it's permissible. I usually cheat and use a primer that is one of the colours needed to minimise painting.

I always look with ave at what others can do. The super detailers, the super cleaners, the rivet counters and everyone in between, but I just don't feel like doing it. For example I am building an Eduard 1/48 P-39 now and it comes with decal seat belts. Now I watched videos about how to make nice seat belts, or perhaps getting aftermarket ones, but in the end I just went with the "good enough" approach. I am a flyer as well and with the cockpit closed, it is not going to make a difference. It's going to be me who has to look at it every day. So if it's good enough for me, then it is the right way. Perhaps one day I will sit down and do some scratch building, super detailing, but for now, I rather finish 10 "mediocre" builds of mine, instead of 1 super detailed one. I want to have planes everywhere in my room. Want to put them on my wall, above my head, on my desk... I can't do that, if I would keep working on one radial engine for 9 months. This doesn't mean that I don't want to strive for a bit of perfection and good looks, but there has to be a line drawn in the sand. And remember kids, a plane on a runway is like a sitting duck.

G'day Chris, Thank you so much for this video. As our mutual mate, Harry says: "FTRC"! (I bought his t-shirt just because it says that.) Chris, I've got a favour to ask you. I too, would dearly like to do some aircraft in flight. I see some aircraft as 'sitters' and others as definite 'flyers'. Could you please let me know your sources for 1/48 and 1/32 pilot figures? General internet searches usually gets me thousands of pics of real pilots and aircrew. On the topic of this video, you are dead right. Our hobby is, basically, a solo 'flight'. Sure, you might do a build with a club mate or friend but 90%+ of modellers work on their 'tod' so, it's always been my thought it's up to the builder to be 'in charge' of the build. I probably should not have picked modelling aircraft because I've never been good with my hands, i.e. woodwork at school etc. As a journalist and writer, I can barely operate a computer; I still prefer a manual typewriter, which was the most valuable skill the RAAF ever taught me. Back in the 70s. (I hated it at the time.) Much later it became the 'tool' of my trade. Since I became a military historian, 15 years ago, nearly all of that is reading and writing. If I didn’t have to transmit info via computer, I’d probably still be using one of my collection of IBM ‘Golfball’ and old English typewriters. I still do my ‘snail mail’ on a ‘machine’. Like you, I love aircraft. For me it's the aircraft of WW2 to the Vietnam days that 'floats' my ‘float plane’. I've done hyper-detail building and I came to a point, some years ago, where I stopped an expensive kit, mid-build, and just binned it. That wasn’t for me. Once I became comfortable with that, I truly began enjoying the hobby. BTW, thanks so much for giving me a glimpse of the Kotare Spit. Small parts count (tick) but it just doesn't grab me. You've saved me a nice sum of folding. I search the market out there for odd and scarce old kits. Too many Spitfires... yes, till I saw a real pic of the pink one! I did the 'baby blue' prototype Spit yonks ago. There was a period, in the US when kit makers would punch out models of aircraft that were, essentially still in advanced stages of evaluation by the USAF or USN and, then, were not put into wide service. They are kits that excite me because it makes people say, "What the heck is that?" There are more of those types of kits out there than you'd think. Sadly, they're old and in the US. Have you checked out the obscene postage costs for kit boxes from the US? Apparently the former POTUS hired a new Postmaster General who, like the then POTUS, didn't know a thing about his job. The USPS was making a loss so this bozo just put up international parcel postage costs by a factor of 5+ ! Anyway, mate, I'm rambling. Thanks again for an important talk. I'd truly appreciate a note from you on model pilots. Harry has my email address. All the best, Chris, so sorry to hear of your brush with the big CA. My dear Joanne had a brief, minor cancer incident and it just gutted me. We both discovered, again, that this life is not a ‘rehearsal’. Take care, Chris, and enjoy life! Cheers, Bill H.

My problem with the Kotare is the value proposition. Modern kits are already crazy expensive as it is, but releasing a kit at the price point they're asking for while excluding details such as an engine and pilot figure sets a bad precedent imo.
@beckersmodels
@beckersmodels Жыл бұрын
I disagree and have talked about this in my review - yes its expensive and kits are getting more expensive (Airfix are ridiculous given the level of quality, aka low) but this is a new startup company and to tool a pilot or an engine would have increased the retail price of the kit far beyond what they would be able to justify. I reckon they aren't even breaking even at the moment... FWIW I really don't care what the kit costs, I'm about the enjoyment of it - this kit is super cheap when you factor in the hours spent enjoying. I'd rather pay $200 for a superlative kit than $60 for say, that Airfix 1/48 Sabre.
