I've been driving a GLK for the last three years and have become a big fan of the general ergonomics around the steering wheel including the column shifter. It is very intuitive and you have paddles if you want to shift up and down. There is also a door interlock to prevent roll-away. You don't need to see the cruise control stalk, it is so intuitive in its operation - that is the whole point, you don't take your eyes off the road!

Good review as always. I had a chance this early evening to look over a GLC 300 at my local Mercedes dealer. I have to concur with your take on this model. I think it's fabulous. Mercedes Benz seems to have nailed it in terms of build quality, looks and cost after 2 previous generations. That's what world class competition does. The consumer wins !!

The normal lights do the job just fine. With German cars you pay for the engineering not the features. Some manufacturers can spec their cars with all the features they want but then once you drive it and look at the detail within those features it isn't very good. A German car doesn't need to have features to make it drive as well as it can because within every car they build, even the most basic one, there is that tangibly intangible (if you get what I mean) quality that makes driving them or being driven in one such a pleasure even without any features. As an example, one of my friends has a Hyundai i20 and the other a VW Polo. Now they both cost about the same. The Hyundai has electric windows front and rear (Polo only in the front), electric folding mirrors, buttons on the steering wheel etc. The Polo has none of those and it doesn't even have colour coded door mirrors or handles. However, drive in the i20 and it feels cheap and insubstantial and it is noisy and unrefined. Then drive the Polo and it's quality and refinement just shine through and it feels like you are driving a larger more expensive car despite the lack of features. The Hyundai may have more features but they mean nothing because the Polo is so much better engineered. Features don't make a good car.

My thoughts exactly Nick. I would, however, put it to compete with the X3 and the Q5. Definitely not with the Macan 2.0. The Burmester option price though I wish Porsche had. Still think the Macan is on a separate league here. If only Porsche would just improve the EA888 to deliver 300hp... Great review as always!

Hi Nick, did it have air suspension or steel springs? The ride on the GLC43 is apparent good with the big wheels but it has air suspension as standard. Agree the infotainment is not as intuitive as the i drive....I just imported a new S63L and came to similar conclusions. But the single stalk for indicator and windscreen wiper is great once your use to it. Great review as usual.

I have also test-driven this car, but in the "more European" 220d version, and I can say, it's my favorite Mercedes so far. They are finally not trying to go after Porsche / BMW, but have designed a car for comfort, which is nice for a change, and it means, there are more options to choose from. My only complaints would be, as you have mentioned, the awful infotainment system, and very pricey options (some of which should be standard in a vehicle like this). Also, if I had to buy one, I would want to get a hybrid version, but my experience with the bigger GLE plug-in hybrid wasn't the best...

You've never driven a new Hyundai then. They're not the old shitboxes they used to be. Honestly Id take an elantra over a C-class, cheaper to run, wayyyy cheaper to fix. They're a very comfortable car, with a good amount of features. Plus, I can buy 3 for the price of a Merc
@SDav217 жыл бұрын
Gene Markowski I have indeed driven the new ones. The new i20 is just dire and while the new Tucson is better than past products it still can't hold a candle stick to European competitors. They are behind in all kinds of technology including drivetrain technology. Their engines have good figures on paper then under perform in the real world. You can take an Elantra all you want but it still won't feel the same a similar European car.

I've been driving one of these while our B250 is in the shop (body GLC is nice, but the chassis rigidity is disappointing! So much so that I wouldn't buy it. I sure hope the E class is more rigid, but it's unlikely given that the chassis is the same. Am I the only one who thinks that the new MB interiors - while looking nice - are overall cheaper feeling than the previous gen. For instance, my W204 C63 (2015) has a better quality, more solid, interior than the new C63.

@SDav217 жыл бұрын
Economy cars aren't engineered to the same level. The difference is in the drive. You can add many features to a car but you don't drive the features you drive the car. The German manufacturers don't need features to make a car because that isn't what makes a good car. It is the engineering and that is what you feel above all else. For example, you can buy a Hyundai i20 and a VW Polo for the same price. The Hyundai may have more features but it feels cheap and drives cheaply whereas the Polo feels solid and upmarket even with the lower feature count.
