Thanks Nick! For so many years a review from car owner is the most authentic information you can get. Now people like you post more and more reviews about nice sport cars, so we as fans can know much better about the car we like. Thank you!

fantscher Turns out there is no problem with the sunroof, the sound is coming from the passenger window. It rolls down about 3mm on its own for some reason. There is also a problem with the mirrors also moving the the fully down position on their own.

Would hate to say but literally all of his issues are electrical, my point of blame, the snow driving and aftermarket electrical parts........ I drive an older porsche, before they shoved so much tech in them... nearing 100k miles and still no issue aside from waterpump and AOS. Excellent cars, weather it is him or porsche, i am no fan of the tech in cars today.

Thank you Nick for taking the time to walk us through a meaningful review of your 991. More owners should make videos following your format, especially your comments about early warranty work and which options you'd spec again and which ones you'd do without. Cheers from Vancouver, BC.

Nick, I wanted to share a personal experience relating to your comment about how having the spoiler up can show you were speeding. I used to own a Carerra 4 (964) and it also had the automatic spoiler. I had it up manually and was driving on a 35 MPH road and WAS NOT SPEEDING yet a highway patrol car going the other way spotted it and knew enough to turn around and pull me over. When I showed him how no I was not speeding and that the spoiler could also be operated manually, we ended up having a long discussion about the car. Turns out the State Trooper was a Porsche fan and I think he used that excuse to pull me over and chat about the car. BTW, I loved that car (it was my 4th Porsche) and hope to own another Carerra 4 again.

Fantastic review. I know long term reviews aren't new, but it's rare for customers to go to so much effort to share their experiences of their toys. A true car enthusiast. If I had the money I'd be seriously considering a 991. It's also good to hear a familiar accent, even if it's from the wrong side of the Tasman.

Hi Nick, thanks for the very informative reviews about this car . I would like to ask you on how you would compare it to your old M3 since it was a DCT as well with almost the same power/weight ratio , how better is the 911 compared to the bimmer when it comes to ( engine, excitement, handling & driver satisfaction ) thank you

Simply a great review, I think it's awesome how open you are about everything. Reviewing the costs, downsides/upsides and things that actually would matter to someone buying a car like this, or any car for that matter. And even though it's very entertaining watching someone like Chris Harris sliding around on a track shouting about how great it is, this beats it in a more sensible way .) Hope to see more from you! Cheers

@ luimarco, in answer to your questions. The 991 is certainly faster and feels more powerful than the M3, it has more toque and is lighter so that is expected. Handling is considerably better as well. The M3 was a much more comfortable car in many ways however. The M3 feels like and SUV after driving the 911 : )

***** A brand new Porsche that breaks every couple months is not something to be proud of or normal. It could have bigger problems later down the line. So it is better to get a full refund through the lemon law and buy a different Porsche or have Porsche AG to exchange the car to a newer one.

Really excellent reviews! Thank you. Your descriptions of the problems you've had reminded me of a friend some years back who was the service manager at a Porsche dealership. Listening to him describe the huge numbers of issues his customers had with their cars and the massive costs of repairs were very amusing. I've enjoyed driving Porsches in the past but service issues are prohibitive factors for me. There are abundant on-line data concerning Porsche reliability, or lack there of. BTW, you mentioned an intermittent delayed starting issue. In this connection, I noticed some variability in your car's engine speed at idle and wonder whether the IAC (idle air control) is defective.

Hey Nick great review! Just wanted to let you know that I own a 2013 c2s. I have had it for a year now. Last week it was freezing and the car was parked outside. I drove out and when I got to highway speeds I heard the whistling you have and it reminded me of your review. I also noticed my mirrors being off sometimes, I thought it's maybe the parking attendants playing around with them. Anyways just wanted to let you know that it's not only your car. I use my car as a daily driver too, I guess people who have multiple cars barely drive their carrera so they do not experience all the issues. Thanks again for the review! I am parting with my c2s this week and receiving my new 2014 turbo... Always been a sucker for the turbo! It will be my daily driver too. Love these cars.

A modern, expensive car with electrical gremlins. Why am I not surprised. I understand everyone wants all the latest technology these days, but a lot of this stuff is just a headache. I can't imagine trying to chase down a bunch of electrical problems on a car that's out of warranty. I hope Porsche doesn't start to fall into the same pattern as Mercedes in that regard.

Electrical issues on a car out of warranty = throwing wads of cash into a fire What a nightware. I guess best to steer away of any models that have drive by wire steering and throttles (and more). What about the 996 911 and 2009 Cayman S in this regards? Those were on my radar as potential used car purchases

Great video. I know it's over a year old now..but I just have to say with the problems you described (not starting, whistling window, droopy mirrors) I have to say you have the patience of a saint. I would have not tolerated that many significant problems from a car of this class. I had to laugh at your story of chasing your rolling car. I too have had a few embarrassing moments jumping back into my Cayman to lock the brake. (FYI, it's Bi-Xenon...not Bi-Xeon and the center part of the cup holder trim is not merely to look better, it prevents your Latte from coasting from side to side when you turn corners.)

Very through review Nick. Thank you! I had a 997 C2S for 4 years and it was completely bulletproof. Prior to that an M3. Seems to be the natural progression. You're absolutely right about the difference between the two cars. I'm anxiously waiting on a GT3 (Sept. delivery) I'm sorry you've had so many little issues. I hope they're resolved with typical German efficiency ;)

Like you, I also made the move from an M3 to Porsche, only I bought both a Cayman S and Panamera 4S and have had similar problems with both cars. I love the engineering and both are a joy to drive, but the quality of construction is not commensurate with the price of the car. My problem list includes PDK failure, head gasket failure, radiator failure, ignition switch failure and a long list of annoying leaks and rattles. The Cayman has spent at least 6 weeks in the shop (Camry rental car!) and the Panamera has spent a cumulative 3 weeks in for repairs. It got to the point that I just became frustrated and warranty-be-damned, I disassembled a large part of the Cayman and upgraded the suspension, brakes and motor. Since I meticulously reassembled the car it not only drives like a GT3, but it has been largely trouble free. I understand and share your continued passion for these cars in spite of the trouble, but it shouldn't be this way. I feel your pain!

I guess it will happen in a few years and I'll be buying cars like the one you specced, Glad your ownership experience is still overwhelmingly positive despite a few gremlins. The combination of four seats and supercar bothering performance is so seductive. Thx. Luv and Peace.

Hey Nick, nice cars you got there. Two miner things and a tip: The middle Part of the interior trim does not close for the look of it, it's to hold your drink in position. And second no german car locks all for wheels on the park brake, its always just the rear. Maybe you tried to pull a stunt and because of the stopped wheels at the back, the esp system braked you to a saved stop. Otherwise good opinion you have concerning the 911. A personal tip, try out one of the GTS models, we've got the GTS Cabrio at the moment and one really feel it been special compared to the "Standart" models. Hope you have fun with the M4 as well ;)

Hi there Nick; stumbled across your reviews of the 991 and enjoyed the thorough and thoughtfulness; A practical review based on daily driving experience. I own a '13 911S and have about 14k km on it. I have had only one issue with my car, the glass roof and it was a bulletin fix. The car is fabulous. Unbelievably refined ride and "hooligan on-demand" performance. They hit it out of the park for the every day driver. My car is the manual transmission. I feel sorry for those who really want a manual but are wooed by the nominal PDK accelerartion advantage (who's timing you ?). The stick is soooo much fun. I (barely) passed on the Burmeister, PDCC, PASM and PSE. Got most everything else. Guards red on espresso full leather, black 5-spoke wheels... great red on black-out look Also had an M3 (2004) previously ... same comparison. Drove a Turbo too ... not usable power... can't wind it out unless on a runway ... don't want AWD ...Would do it all again ... nice work.

Eventually, I will move on to a porsche ( either 997 c2/4S or the newer 991). I was going to pull the trigger last Sunday... The sound the makes and the way a 911 handles is amazing. Cabin is quiet and isn't too busy- seats are simple and just right. I decided to wait another 6 months just based on my reaction of driving a manual again ( where my M3 is a DCT). It was great though... The 997 c4s I was going to get felt so much lighter than my e92 M3

Good choice on the 9500ci however the shifter is a weak laser jammer. Hopefully the low laser signature of the vehicle will help them work better. The only solution to quiet down the Valentine One is to turn Xband alerts off.

Actually they have just updated the Passport 9500 radar system. I just had the laser shifters updated on my GTR today, and the brand new updated system is being installed in to my 911 Turbo end of the month. Supposedly the new shifters are going to work with the newer laser radar types better, there are also more of them.

The Escort 9500ci's radar portion is brilliant, but their jammers are absolute rubbish. Look into getting yourself a Laser Interceptor system if you encounter much LIDAR. (I live in Ohio and it's *all over*.) Escort has just recently (late March / early April) upgraded the 9500 to use new jammers which are actually just rebadged versions of the Laser Interceptor... you could retrofit that kit onto the existing 9500, but given the upcharge that Escort wants for them, easier to just put in the LI system (it only has a single switch and control box, no display module or anything). And while I agree with you about the V1, I added one along with their bluetooth module and an Android phone, running the "YaV1" app, which basically adds GPS functions to the V1 to help quiet it down quite a bit. I appreciate the redundancy of two systems, plus the arrows on the V1 are very handy to have. I found your videos through reddit and it's a shame you've been jerked around by Porsche. My boss has a 2011 911 C4S Cab that I've been able to drive a few times, so I'm incredibly jealous, even with the problems. :)

Did you have the mirrors/windows acting up, before you had the aftermarket addons installed? After watching your most recent update, it sounds to me like all your electrical gremlins are related to one issue - the short circuit. That's what's draining the battery, causing the dash to go out, and creating all other side effects.
@alexrowland
@alexrowland 10 жыл бұрын
As crazy as it may sound to some, I know it did to me at the time, relatively minor electrical issues in newer vehicles that rely so heavily on computer systems can cause a whole range of serious problems. I spent $600+ on labor at BMW of Las Vegas (never do business with them, they're straight crooks) to find out why my 335i was constantly going into limp mode as well as a few other glitches, and after being told I would need new turbos I had a small independant shop accurately identify the real problem. A bad battery. That was IT! The mighty BMW brought to it's knees by a battery!! Apparently the systems in it were so sensitive, that the slightly low voltage the old battery was spitting out was all that was needed to screw everything up. I'm not saying I think you have a bad battery, just that mrjost55 has a potentially valid point. Seemingly minor electrical issues can wreak havoc on today's modern vehicles. Something as small as a short could easily be the cause behind most of your electrical gremlins.

Hey Nick, I just want to take a moment and thank you for the time and effort you put forth in sharing your ownership experience of the 991. I think too many people forget that there is more to owning a car than the way it drives. I am curious as to why you decided to get a 911 over the new Cayman S. I am a big fan of both but the mid engine appeal of the Cayman has me gravitating towards it. Plus, a heavily optioned Cayman will be just a few grand over the base cost of a 911 S which is a huge value in my mind. In this video you mentioned you've been able to drive all the Porsche models including the Cayman, would you mind sharing what you liked and disliked about the Cayman when comparing to your 911?
@NickMurray
@NickMurray 10 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of good things I can say about the Cayman (and the Boxster) and I have been lucky enough to drive both the MT and PDK of these cars. The mid engine arrangement is a noticeable change in handling over the 911. Not better just different but enjoyable. As for why did I not get the Cayman? It was never in consideration for me for two reasons, first the 2 seat only is a step too far for me inconvenience wise and second, while I like the look of the new Cayman/Boxster, they do not come close to the curves of the 991 for me. The 911 is the real deal but unfortunately it costs so much more. If you look at it from a performance only point of view I would peg the C2S as only 10-15% better than the Cayman S even though it can be 2 x the price. So from a performance only point of view the Cayman S is outstanding value for money. If you love the look of the Cayman, get one. They are an amazing car.

First of all, great video (or videos, they're all great), and second, awesome car man! Your Carrera S is optioned nearly exactly as I would option mine if I were to buy one, including the same exterior and interior color and wheels. I think the deep navy blue really fits the car well. The only difference is I would choose the option to make the inside portion on the Sport-techno wheels black, they remind me of classic Fuch's with the black/silver combo. Also I noticed a new option on the car configuration on Porsche's website (where I admittedly spend too much of my time) called the "Power Kit" which ups the horsepower to 430. I think it's cool, but honestly $17,800 is a bit much for an option package. I mean, it brings the Carrera S's price to the same level as the 911 50th Anniversary Edition (which also has 430 hp) yet doesn't have the extras that the Anniversary model has. My question is, if you were buying a Carrera S right now, would you add the power kit? Not that I'm actually buying a Porsche anytime soon (just starting college this fall semester) but I wondered if someone who does own one thinks it would be worth spending $20k for 30hp. Once again, great work on the videos, they are as good as professional car reviews (even if you can't talk and drive like Chris Harris ;) )
@NickMurray
@NickMurray 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. The power kit has been around since early 2013 and was available when I configured my car, as you can see I did not get it. As you say it is a great deal of money for only 30hp and no extra torque. It is a noticeable improvement in power but I find the 400hp be more than enough. I think if they priced it at $8,000 or less most people would go for it but not at that price. If I was going to spend the money I would get the 50th anniversary ed which includes the power kit and other good stuff.

I cant believe you changed the side indicators to euro version on this car. I live in Europe and I absolutely adore the american side indicators regardless what car they are on. Oh well, I believe it is a case of whatever you don't get seems more delicious.

I still find it hard to believe that dash cams aren't coming as options yet on cars, especially higher end sports / luxury vehicles. I would love to have a nicely designed built in OEM unit that can be accessed through my nav system

Thanks Nick. I watched both videos back to back and found them quite informative. My car is also German (Audi TT roadster), and I have the Bose stereo system which is okay but I strongly thinking of replacing just the head unit with something. Any suggestions? I would like the head unit to have Bluetooth. Also my car is turbo charged with a dual clutch and I like the sound of the car engine much better when I am using the clutch in manual mode. I found that at 4500 rpm at 65 mph the engine performs best. Is there an rpm that you found works best at highway speed? Also here in Arizona the weather is very hot and the turbo runs the engine very hot just on its own so I think my car needs a vented hood but I don't think your 991 911 would have the same temperature issues if it is not turbo charged or does it? Also did the start up issues ever get resolved? I think it may have something to do with the fuel lines or fuel injectors or fuel pump. Just a thought.

Hi Nick, Congrats on some really well prepared and executed reviews. You obviously put a lot of thought into the selection of your cars and I would value your opinion. I have been intending for some time now to buy a Boxster S as a retirement "Toy". (have had 2 before). HOWEVER, thanks to Guido and now you, I have decided to do the "You only live once" thing and go for a 911. I won't be doing any track work and would anticipate it spending most of its life in Ireland (du Nord). I have driven a 997 Cs on a Porsche sponsored track day and it was noticeably superior to my then Boxster S (much to my surprise). The way it hunkered down as it blasts out of a corner, gave it a character all of its own. I would be delighted with a 991 C2s, but I keep getting distracted by two other scenarios: 1) C4s for which in order to retain my budget I would have to compromise on the spec., specifically a manual gearbox Which sort of appeals in a way, especially with the rev matching). 2) and this is the killer.....A Targa, (not the S) with a limited spec. Whichever is going to have the sports exhaust (Fascinating how long it took Porsche to realise that the sound is a MAJOR factor!). Would I miss the torque of the non S version? I know You cant answer for me but I'd appreciate your opinion. Regards Tim

Hi Tim, Here are my thoughts on the C4S. The C4S is faster than the C2S, not by much but just a hair faster because of the grip, the car magazines back this up. The C4S also has a wider rear end and the light bar which is good or not depending on taste. The C4S also has a bigger gas tank for some reason. Most of all however the C4S has all that lovely grip which is great. So why on earth would anyone get a C2S? The price is much the same. Well for me, I simply had too much trouble getting the C4S to oversteer or step out in any way unless I pushed it to uncomfortable levels. And there was the issue for me. I simply had more fun in the C2S and that trumped everything because why by a $140,000 car unless I was having the maximum fun. I totally understand why people buy the C4S however. So if you find that the C2S is more fun like I did then you can count out the C4S. The non S Targa... you will miss the torque that is for sure, there are a lot of people that seem to think the C2 needs pushing too hard to have fun so I think the Targa would be worse because of the extra pounds. Personally I think the C2 still has plenty of power and the Targa would as well but it would not be a step up from the Boxster S only in looks/style. So their you go. Which is more important to you, the performance/fun or the look/style? Really there is no wrong answer here, all great cars. One last thing. For me (and I am not alone here) all the 991's feel so much more powerful with the PDK for some reason. I love the MT but the PDK just feels like there is more punch there. So drive both see if you feel the same way. Let me know what you end up getting! All the best Nick

Regarding falling mirror issue, do you have the reverse mirror tilt feature? Mercedes have that feature to help you parallel park. I wonder if that is causing the issue.

Really interesting series of videos, thanks. I don't understand the interest in the options though, like illuminated sills, rear footwell lighting with adjustable delay, 'G' sensor on the instruments, buttons to adjust the rear spoiler, more speakers etc. It's just added weight and a source of faults! Whether a car rolls 1.4* less than a GTR in the corners, does it matter? Not really. Cars with electronics that dial all of this stuff out (like roll)... it's just not what cars are about, imho. The best car I've ever driven was a 997 911S that had no options, as far as I could tell, apart from the chrono pack with a stopwatch on the dashboard which looked pretty pointless. It depends what you want from a car and from driving. I suppose that is why they are 'optional' and why Porsche decided not to put them on the car themselves!

Fantastic review from an owners perspective!!! Silly Question: I am looking at one of these (2013 4S though), but wont pull the trigger for a couple of years (2017), how do you think the car will hold up and what do you expect for depreciation by then?

Ahh. the old not starting issue. That's definitely a problem. Curiously enough I and my family have only experienced that with German built cars. However, I am a huge fan of the iconic 911. Give me the engine and transmission as everything else becomes expensive extravagance, the cost of which cannot be sufficiently recouped come trade-in time. At least you're enjoying the car like it should be... when it starts! Consider the new Targa for your next car.

Thanks for the reply and thanks again for taking the time to inform people about your experience. Despite the numerous petty problems you describe, I am still purchasing a 991 turbo. I have two questions. I am interested in the same interior as your car, standard black with pebble grey contrast stitching, including wheel. Rhodium exterior likely. How has the leather been holding up? You may have read the leather discussions on the forums. Some people think the standard leather does not do that well. Also, does the contrasted stitching get dirty? Thanks again.
@NickMurray
@NickMurray 10 жыл бұрын
Yes the problems with my car seem to be one off, these are actually very reliable cars so you should have no problem with your Turbo. As for the stitching, no it does not get dirty, and the leather in my car stands up to dogs and general abuse well.

Hey Nick, looking to lease a 911 Carrera in the coming weeks, and was wondering what seat options you went with. I've driven a few of them for work but never took notice of what seats each car had. Not really concerned about comfort, but I am wondering what the major differences are between the standard 4 way and 14 way and optional Sport 4 and 14 way seats, and which ones you'd recommend if my driving position is similar to a Formula 1 position. My nearest dealer is 80~ miles away so I'll be building everything on the website :(

The 996 were and are nightmares. Porsche would have been better off being a muscle car rather then a sport luxury to soak the people who think they are great cars. In 2013 Subaru introduced the BRZ and its flatter then Nicks car at only 25K$ and is a bullet proof BOXER engine. Take a look at the the WRX Sti AWD 330 HP vs a 911 Carrera 4 at 345 HP the Subaru is more reliable and has a higher resale value... What if Subaru put the 3.6r and tunes it with two turbos... The BRZ would lap the 911 GT. The 911 GT is only 4.75 seconds faster then the 4 cylinder manual BRZ around a track... Its faster due to the power it has over the BRZ... being 205 HP
