Mick Box is such a great guitarist, isn't he? He doesn't always play flashy, he plays with feeling and his solos always fit perfectly with the music. Very underrated as one of the guitar gods of the 70s. If you like his "wah" sound, Ritchie Blackmore used it a LOT on the first 4 Deep Purple albums - also great stuff.

The Magician’s Birthday is true story telling. The happiness of the birthday celebration is slowly taken over by an EVIL force. That’s why the happy part fades out and the dangerous part takes over. Very good of Nick to pick up on that. Great great song.

Hi Nick , I get exactly what you are talking about when buying albums. In the 70's it's all I wanted to spend my wages on and then getting home and the ritual of playing a vinyl record. Today I buy mostly cd's [ My vinyl collection A-Z is pretty extensive after many decades ] I do buy cd's alot going into town or just via Amazon. I don't have Spotify. I have always prefered the physical album. I'm the same with dvd's if it's a movie or live concert I really want. I got shelves of box sets ... Lots of 70s tv . Lol, like "Tarzan" starring Ron Ely [ Best Tarzan ever ] .. "Man in a Suitcase" ... "Department S" ... "The Time Tunnel" ... "Land of the Giants" ... "Lost in Space" ... "Doctor Who" > Massive fan with many dvd's + box sets. ... I'm kinda off the subject of Uriah Heep .... So ...Brilliant band ! Love their music and this is a great marathon. [ Maybe you will get to hear my favourite, "July Morning "..original studio version remastered is awesome ...especially the guitar whip lashes !!! - only on that version ] Byee Jim X

My guitarist and me have been playing together since 1978, and almost every time we've played out (usually two to five nights a week) we've done this song ("The Magician's Birthday"). We are so in tune with each other, and the guitar/drum section has evolved so much, that it never gets stale or boring. We like to end our last set of the night with either this song or "Buzzard" by Armageddon. We've played millions of clubs in Milwaukee and Madison, along with another gazillion in Oshkosh/Appleton, Green Bay, Chicago, Rockford and Minneapolis/St. Paul, and almost everywhere we are, there's people that have seen us many many times. If we don't do "The Magician's Birthday", they go home disappointed. Such a classic and iconic tune. And a blast to play.

Uriah Heep we're often referred to as 'the Beach Boys of rock' because they used complex 5 part harmonies in a lot of their songs, as you've no doubt noticed. A big influence on the sound of Queen who were big fans. If I were you Nick I'd go directly to the Live 73 album. Its the best overview of their work at that time. And July Morning on that album stands up against anything by Zeppelin, Purple etc who were their contemporaries at the time.

As soon as I see Uriah Heep or hear Graybeard sponsored the marathon, I know it's a winner! Many times I have considered submitting Magician's Birthday and am so happy to see Nick's reaction to it. I agree, Demons and Wizards should be next, it has special memories for me. A friend of mine recorded it on cassette for me when I was in high school and I wore that tape out, then bought the 8 track, cassette, album and eventually the CD! And as a side note, the big assignment in our video production class in my senior year of high school was to make a music video. My choice was Magician's Birthday. I had a cape and everything, we went out to a local park with lots of trees in the cold fall weather and shot the video. Sadly there was trouble with our editing equipment so it was never finished. Great memories though!

Some interesting info for you: 1) The drummer on The Magician's Birthday was Lee Kerslake who would eventually go on to play on the first two Ozzy Osbourne albums. 2) Uriah Heep got the idea for their lush harmonies from the band Three Dog Night. The first time Heep toured the USA they opened for Three Dog Night who had become very successful at that time. They heard the three part harmonies from Cory Wells, Danny Hutton and Chuck Negron and decided to add that sound to their arsenal.

Ken Hensley was a big part of UH. Great keyboards and singer and slide guitarist. Sings a lot with Byron. Peeps don't realize that when you hear slide on guitar in UH it isn't Box, its Hensley. Also, the 'Ahhs' on Sunrise are shared by Byron and Hensley. Hensley passed away last year. RIP All slide guitar on Echoes in the Dark is Ken Hensley. It is not Mick Box.

This comes close to a perfect marathon. It's one of my 2 favourite albums of the band, an album, which has only good songs. It has to have the opener and the epic ... and with the others you can't go wrong. So I shut up and enjoy 😄 Sunrise - I love David Byron's british accent so much, also the background vocals. The whole composition is great. Intermission - Nick likes Mick Box - my thought : wait til you hear the Magician 😂😂 Echoes in the dark - good example, why I like "old" music so much, you hear exactly each instrument, no layers, if there is a second guitar, it's played by Ken Hensley Sweet Lorraine - this intro "winds" into your brain and you'll never forget. Magician's birthday - my no 1 Uriah Heep song - let's see what Nick thinks 😆YEAH, this guitar solo always lifts me up to somewhere I don't know and I don't want it to end. Your face tells a story 🤘 Thank you Eric for this fantastic marathon and Nick for you reaction. PS: one of the reasons, why Uriah Heep didn't get the recognition, they deserved, was the musical press; after the release of album nr 1 the prognosis was a short life for this band. Now look, who's still there, although only 1 member is still alive. And the fans loved them right from the beginning. The Magician's birthday was one of 3 Top 10 albums in Germany

King Diamond is a HUGE fan of Heep's singer David Byron. I believe he named his son after him. David is my favorite singer by far. Sadly he died much too young. Heep, in general, is criminally underrated. They are an excellent heavy prog band (still going in fact -- Mick Box is their tireless guitar player).

Appreciate the review. I saw this band in 1977. Their harmonies and melodies with a metal/progressive edge were fantastic. The keyboards were the heart and soul of the band. However, it’s hard to not appreciate the awesome bass, guitar, drums and vocals and how they came together. To this day they are a very underrated band.

Too much Nick! This reaction choice is so good. Isn't Magician's Birthday an awesome song? I love the kazoos and the vocoder. The drumming is amazing, as is the bass work. And Mick Box's guitar work is to die for. Hensley's keyboards do so much to set the mood, and lyrically we are taken to magical realms. I always thought the studio production on this was top notch too. This is an epic song man. I have been digging this since the 70s. Uriah Heep!!

As the morning sun rises,I’m standing on a remote hill in 69’s Vietnam, with legs spread,in defiance of the dangers of my coming day.Music was the main venue there to remain in contact with the WORLD and take the edge off of a busy day.Sunrise perfectly expressed that feeling of invincibility a few years later. In that sense,in was not just a piece of music, but a comforting message.

You're totally right Nick! Uriah Heep definitely belongs to the Big Four of British hard rock. There is a pretty general consensus on this. Also, Mick Box came number two in the polls back then only after Jimi Hendrix for using the wah-wah pedal. So yes, many players can still learn from him. And finally, Ken Hensley always claimed that he basically wrote music to support his stories (i.e. lyrics), which is why you were able to see the connection immediately. Mystery solved.

Some really imaginative songwriting, serious quality musicianship, and Byron was a real progenitor with this style of vocals. This is my favorite album of theirs along with Demons and Wizards.

Great album. Not quite as good as Demons & Wizards, but a great one nonetheless!!!! 👍👍 The sound quality of the vinyl wasn't quite as good as Demons & Wizards for some reason. Different studio or different sound engineer? Don't know. Guitar jam in TMB with Kerslake on drums is always fun to listen to. Thanks @greybeardmusicman2280 !!!!

Great album!!!!! Deep cuts with lots of melodic qualities. Metal opera. Top three bands in my early 70s were Led Zeppelin, Moody Blues, and Uriah Heep.

I know it doesn’t have to be either/or, but I’ve always thought Heep was the band Deep Purple wanted to be.

Robert Plant said in an interview that English Rock vocalists sound like Southern rock vocalists and that is why English Rockers were so big in the Southeast US. We hillbillies in the Southeast are mostly British b/c that is who settled here. Nice catch on Sweet Lorraine. Uriah Heep was huge in the 70s in the US.

So far you are focusing on the David Byron era. Next is the John Lawton era. There are some very good Heep songs from that era as well. "FreenEasy, Free Me, Illusion, The Dance" are four good ones from the Innocent Victim album.

@@bookhouseboy280 Absolutely! I had forgotten about this song and had to give it a listen again. Now I can't get the damned thin out of my head! But then again most John Lawton songs do that to me. A unique and powerful singer on par with or just a cut above (heresy I know) David Byron. That's why I describe it a different eras that are worthy of Nick's reactions. Bernie Shaw isn't any slouch either! At any rate Innocent Victim is an often overlooked and underrate LP. Thanks for pointing out Choices!

This band I consider UNIQUE. Usually most bands have a more or less constant type of sound from one song to the other. UH allways has surpised me with so many different sounds in one record or even within a song!. Compare Salisbury to Rain and July Morning, or Look at Yourself to Lady in Black to Circus or The Magitian´s Birthday (this song has a lot of different parts within) and so on. Thy also have different rythms within many of their songs. Also many superb lyrics, Bass and drum lines and so on. Must hear their acoustic concert with guestsThijs Van Leer from Focus and Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull. Though for me their music after the 80´s is not the same they still have many marterpieces to look for. Keep listening and thanks from Venezuela!
