Welcome to the sad but beautiful (small) oeuvre of Nick Drake. He was helplessly unsuccesful (also due to his shy nature) during his lifetime, but then became super hip in 'indie' circles in the late 1990s/early 00s (which probably was my scene as a student 😳). I have to admit I had a bit of a suspicion this would be something for Lex. Happy I hit the right nerve there 😄 Bitte schön und servus aus Österreich.

Thanks so much for this request, Murdock. Nick had such special vocals and sound. Unfortunately, short-lived and like other artists, appreciated more after death. I’d have to fact check these artists, but I’ve heard the list includes: Van Gogh, Monet, Poe, Kafka, Emily Dickinson, Vermeer, Bach - appreciated more after death. I ordered them in the late eighties/early nineties on CD , having had the available albums years before then and wanted all of his works. I was around 14 yrs at the time, I used to go around to their house. State or the art stereo, I can still hear those giant wharfdales now! And that CLUNK of the needle touching the vinyl! He used to buy obscure stuff, German bands, and french bands! And do you remember the ISLAND LABEL SAMPLERS? My first listening of Nicks was PINK MOON, got pulled right in! The previous followed. Pretty bad come down going home to listen to my basic stereo! Never did get around to getting a really good one! Take care.

Nick Drake probably has the greatest gulf between his popularity during his lifetime - he sold only a few thousand copies of his three albums - and his influence on generations of artists that came later. The cut you listened to is from his second album. This album is his most "pop" work. His first album, "Five Leaves Left" is mostly small combos (along with some amazing orchestration on a few songs). His final album, "Pink Moon" is almost all just him playing guitar with no other instrumentation; some of the songs are just fragments, others almost like nursery rhymes. He died from an overdose of antidepressants shortly after it was released. The common elements in all his work are his ghostly, calm voice, his unique style of fingerpicking, and his shy, quizzical lyrics about watching the world from the outside. All of these come together in his song "Northern Sky": it is as beautiful as music gets.

Thank you for doing this. Nick Drake died in 1974 age 26 from an overdose of antidepressants, possibly by mistake. He is now a cult figure but because of his aversion to live performing he didn't get well known at the time. At The Chime Of A City Clock and Riverman will put a spell on you that will never fade. Nick Drake and John Martyn were great friends. John Martyn was helping Nick to fight his depression and wrote ‘Solid Air’ for Nick. It would be great if you could react to this , it is a great song in its own right and it also gives you an insight to Nick Drake.

Yeah, John Martyn. Certainly something to request in the future. I only didcovered him after Nick Drake, but would now say I'm an even bigger fan of John Martyn than Drake. A lot of his lyrics speak to me on a deeply emotional level. And the music is just out of this world. His guitar playing could even impress Nick ;-)

Seconded, Nick suffered badly from stage fright. Being unable to promote his music (and whilst his sister was becoming a well known actress) and whilst his contemporaries like John were getting more successful, this led to bouts of severe depression. His family and friends (such as John Martyn) tried to help but he died of an overdose. John continued his progression from folk singer to singer/songwriter to (in his own mind, at least) rock god and left a huge legacy of songs and performances, never reaching mainstream fame because of his rebellious nature, meaning he preferred independent record production to the trials and tribulations of promotion by a mainstream record label. Quite unlike his friend, John was a natural passionate performer (and entertainer) and John’s live performances would sell out very quickly. His tribute to Nick Drake, ‘Solid Air’ is a good place to start, but you’ll discover lots of excellent performances of John’s on YT.

Thank you so much for this reaction. The song is of great personal sentiment. My big sister introduced me to it in 1972 after hearing it on her new double-album Island Records sampler called "Bumpers" (released 1970). I went out and bought the album Bryter Layter (I still have it). Sadly, my sister passed in 2014, aged just 61. She was a huge influence on my life. It's difficult for me to listen to Nick Drake these days. Nick made just 3 albums in his short lifetime with virtually no commercial success. He fell into a depression and his third and final album, Pink Moon, is reflective of his state of mind at the time. He has a southern English accent, by the way. This is the first song I ever heard by Nick Drake ( from a sampler for Island Records ) -- was immediately hypnotized by it . ( That was when he was still alive ) -- he didn't sell that many records in his time. Many decades later a Volkswagen commercial had one of his songs in the background , Pink Moon - and from that song he gained a cult following that continues to grow . His vocals and guitar playing are extraordinary , I would categorize his music as ' beautiful melancholy '

The band America were fans of Nick Drake and recorded a song in 1975 called "Daisy Jane", which they say was partially inspired by this song. It doesn't sound anything like this, but it's a good tune as well. I also suggest "At the Chime of a City Clock". It's hypnotic, one of the most beautiful things I've heard.

Welcome to the beautiful world of Nick Drake. You’ve likely heard Pink Moon and maybe Black Eyed Dog used in commercials, TV, and movies. He’s quite well known to real fans of acoustic and folk, but not to the mainstream at all and as others have said he only achieved popularity long after he passed. And he’s influenced many musicians, particularly with his use of open tunings. His song Fruit Tree (from his first album) is quiet and sad but really lovely. To hear the real beauty of his guitar and voice try something from the Pink Moon album like the title song or Things Behind the Sun. Most of his songs are quite short so it would be easy to do two at a time.

Speaking of Nick Drake and other artists who never quite hit the big time for one reason or another, I suggest Big Star. They were an early '70s band with great songwriting, singing, and production, but they literally started to self-destruct before their first album was even completed, and their record label failed to promote them properly. Some really great stuff, though, including "Ballad of El Goodo", "Thirteen", and "Back of a Car". The song by them most people have heard is "In the Street", which served as the theme to That '70s Show.

His first record had some pretty heavy string arrangements, a bit too sweetened; then there's this record, which has some fairly dense band arrangements and some simpler stuff. Some amazing collaborators (Richard Thompson and John Cale on the same record??) , and Pink Moon was solo acoustic guitar and voice. Drake used non-standard tunings and was able to capitalize on odd atmostpheric voicings with his fingerpicking. A huge, huge talent, died super young.

Great reaction of a very influential artist, unfortunately not until after his tragic death, as someone else has said his great friend was another "doomed" artist John Martyn who I recommended on one of your other reactions.. Two more disparate people it's hard to imagine the introverted Drake, (although he did partake of vast quantities of drugs), and the hard living Martyn, who took self destruction to a whole new level. They're both pretty mean guitarists, though very different in style. Nick Drake is a phenomenal artist, and despite his relatively (compared to other artists) small but very dedicated following, I think he still remains very under appreciated. All of his music is incredible, but I think his album _Pink Moon_ is my favourite. Completely barebones (pretty much just him and his guitar) and soul bearing. I would really recommend checking more of his music out; His songs Pink Moon, Place To Be, Road, and Which Will are some really beautiful ones. Thank you for this! Love your channel. This immediately shot me back to a memory years ago when I worked in a psychiatric unit of a nursing home. One of our beloved passed and for some reason while driving to and away from her funeral service I felt it appropriate to play this song on repeat. A sad memory but a beautiful one. OMG you have stumbled across another of my top 10 desert island albums! The whole album was way ahead of its time. When I was going to high school I listened to an indie radio station called WHFS in Bethesda Maryland and the early morning DJ was named Dianne and she played Bryter Layter as her intro theme song every morning at 6am as I woke up groggy getting ready for school. Bryter Layter is one of two instrumentals (not counting the "Intro" to the album) that featured Nick on guitar and Lyn Dobson playing flute. A great way to welcome a new day. The album was produced by Joe Boyd who also produced a lot of the Fairport Convention's early stuff. Some of those guys play on this album too! My favorite song on this album is Northern Sky with John Cale on celeste. So many other great songs too... One of these things first, At the chime of a city clock, Poor Boy.....!!!!! All your other followers can give you the tragic history and trivia about Nick Drake and just how great he was. My favorite song of his is Fruit Tree. He only really had 3 great albums but I think this one was his best. I don't know how to get on your request list but if you like this you HAVE to listen to Judee Sill's "The Kiss". I guarantee it will make you choke up. She had a tragic story too.

That's a great one. Ditto 'Cello Song' and 'Black dog' possibly a reference to his fragile mental condition. The anti-depressant's of his era were famously brutal to the psyche in comparison to more modern 'medications'. He may have been a stranger to the genuine benefits of hash, who knows?

Hi Nick & Lex. Yes, Nick Drake was English. And as Lex mentioned, it's something you can listening to on a Saturday morning...so, I strongly recommend that you listen to the album Pink Moon on a calm Saturday night and let yourselves drift away (no drugs necessary...in my opinion...well, I've never had to take any) to that soft voice and guitar, with interesting tunings. Nick Drake is an incredible artist, one who died too soon and without recognition that has finally come to some extent in the last 20 years. Drake was an amazing guitarist and singer, unique in his sound and with some great compositions. As for the orchestral element of this, it was described that Nick was always such a perfectionist that he would get the first take perfect, so the producer and engineer just had to make sure everyone else was on their game. I believe this was recorded live, and his college friend was the one who arranged the orchestral accompaniment. His voice and guitar work are mesmerizing, and that voice so resonant and full of deep emotion that the songs are often transcendent.

Nick Drake is a legend (but sadly not in is time)... everything the guy recorded in his brief life is mandatory listening imo. Unparalleled brilliance.

Hey guys, great video and so cool that you are getting into Nick Drake. He is utterly amazing with full band, orchestra or just him and his guitar. Much like Joni he can make you ecstatic or cry like a baby. Sadly a fragile person who had serious problems with depression and shyness. He had the good fortune of being helped by great musicians like Richard Thompson and Fairport Convention. If you look for the song Pink Moon I'll bet you'll recognize it. There are documentaries on him too. Lots of love.

Nick Drake's music lives in a special place. So glad you two have discovered him. It's so cool/perceptive that you said his music could belong on the soundtrack of "This Is Us"...because it does! Nick Drake's song "Northern Sky" featured on one of the episodes in Season One. Love that you guys are sharing your journey with us. Keep it coming!

From The Morning, Place To Be, and Day is Done are my favorite Nick Drake songs. Everyone needs to know Nick’s music. There’s never been anyone like him. He was way ahead of his time. The acoustic Indy sound he’s known for didn’t find mainstream popularity until almost a quarter century AFTER his death.

Nick Drake is one of those artist I can't just listen to one song. I invariably end up journeying once again through his entire catalog. It is sadly way too brief a journey as he died young.

I never in my life expected to hear Nick Drake on a reaction channel.He never had a huge following but after his sad death he somehow , among musicians and very knowing music fans anyway, started a growing cult that continues to this day. You got very lucky to have this artist exposed to you.

Wow, you're doing Nick Drake! Nick was an amazing talent, but so extremely shy never got famous beyond a small circle in UK. Dream Academy did a song called "Life In A Northern Town" (early 80's ?) about learning of his death. Check out the soundtrack of film "Serendipity" or his songs; Northern Sky, and Pink Moon. He reminds me of my younger brother, in that they seemed to live on a different plane of existence.
