What a great time to be on this planet! Saw this gig at Birmingham NEC on the Friday night then Genesis at Wembley the following night!

You did perfectly, NIck - I'm sure this specific video was a big reason for the request and is the best example of the trustfall for this song.

One of the greatest concerts I’ve ever seen was Peter Gabriel at the Universal Amphitheater in 1982. He sang this song and did the same thing… turning his back on the crowd and falling into the waiting arms of the crowd. They passed him from hand to hand… all the way to the back of the rows and back to the stage. An absolutely amazing moment that I will never forget. Gabriel always loved to interact with the crowd. From his amazing call and response of “BIKO” all the way back to his days in GENESIS (around 1972) when he ran from the back of the stage and got a running start to end up leaping off the stage and into the crowd. This was during the encore (“THE KNIFE”)… He apparently broke his ankle. Got back on stage to finish the song… then the rest of the tour had to be postponed for a while. Gabriel gave everything during his shows. …and that’s a major reason (among many others) that he’s a legend.

That one was absolutely fantastic! I saw him back in 1982 when the album Security came out and he did most of that album, Including "Lay your hands on me" That show was held @ The Milwaukee Performing Art Center a 2,000 seat venue made for music. That show was off the charts, Gabriel was about to hit his stride. When he did Lay your hands on me, The crowd passed him to the middle of the venue, When out of nowhere a person dressed like a flower straight out of the "Supper's Ready" hugged him. A show for the ages.

Saw him do this in Chicago in ‘83, made it back to the stage with one sock, half a shirt, and his underwear. He looked down, shrugged and walked off stage. The band had to play the next song out for him to get dressed. I’ll never forget this.

I was lucky to be backstage for this tour. Peter was incredibly and eerily calm pre show. Like unusually calm. He didn’t talk as much as whisper. We’d chat before the show and the. we’d walk together towards the stage and part…me to my seats…he’d climb onstage and suddenly transform into a madman. He had a “special apparatus” for this show… it basically was special padding to give extra protection to his privates.

I started seeing Peter and Band perform Live, starting in 78'. Similar to his Genesis Song Roles, that Character inhabited him, not Visa Versa. Live, we all felt "it". Jaws were dropped. Amazements ensued.

@@semchen9I saw his first solo tour also with Fripp at the Roxy in LA…400 seat nightclub with those tiny tables. During one of the songs he actually walked on everyone’s table. That was way more dangerous than this video.

Peter Gabriel never ceases to amaze me the man is pure genius i think is voice over the years got a little deeper but you can always tell its peter gabriel singing with the raspiness in his voice i have always wondered if he'd have stayed with genesis but I guess all the old Genesis fans will have wondered that peter gabriel i salute you you are a legend a genius

First, HAPPY B-DAY, JOE! Second, I saw the Security tour among many many Peter Gabriel shows (essentially each of his first six solo album tours), and yes, the trust in the Lay Your Hands on me dive and crowd surf was beyond comprehension and made it like a religious communion. And Nick, yes please to Return to Forever!

I’ve seen hundreds of shows including Rush over 25 times! (Which I always considered the gold standard), but Peter Gabriel gave the greatest concert performance I’ve ever seen (back in the early 90’s …I think It was the Secret Garden tour). A true theatrical multi media emotional powerhouse. He was outstanding!

That’s the iconic moment Peter created crowd surfing. One of my favorite things to point out is Peter never says, “lay your hands on me”. But you sure do when you hear it.

That was a great reaction and thanks for the well wishes. I still think this is #1 show for me although Pulse was pretty damned good. So good that instead of going 2 nights I went to 4 shows in 2 cities. But for raw emotion and crowd engagement this is the one for me. Glad you picked this one. It truly is amazing and this was the right version (p.s. I sent you the link, you must have missed it in the follow up dm). The other songs would have been pretty good too but the video does make this song. It's amazing he did that I think at every tour date he did. Favorite moment in video is when tour guy with the bandana is pulling him out of the crowd and says "You Rock" with amazement on his face. That Ian Hunter song is awesome but not well known. Has Jaco Pastorious on bass, Ansley Dunbar on drums, David Sanborn on sax, etc. they are all blow your socks off good. More about the playing and groove and less atmospheric and theatrical which is what makes Gabriel so great. Had alot of fun. Looks like you had a good time. 👍🎶❤Liked little tale of you musical evolution as a boy to teen. Cheers

Happy Birthday, Joe! Great reaction, Nick! I love the whole Security album- lots of great drumming and interesting sounds. There's a video called Peter Gabriel on the South Bank Show (The Making of Security) that's 45 minutes or so long and well worth your time to see his creative process. He took his time and made a flawless album, IMO. Really fun to see the video! He is such a wonderful performer! Watching it inspired me to watch a concert of his from 1978, (Rockpalast), which was on the same tour as when I first saw him in Royal Oak, my home town, when I was 20 and still in college. What a blast! So much energy! Tony Levin sans mustache, and Sid McGinnis from David Letterman's World's Most Dangerous Band! Anyhoo, I think you and Alexia would really enjoy reacting to the whole Security album! 🎵❤️🎵 Debbie

For Peter Gabriel IV, he made it a point to not use any cymbals on any of the songs. He didn't like how they sounded plus the difficulty in recording.
