The Earth Band were absolutely amazing live..... saw them in London 1976 and they were mesmerising, their Nightingales and Bombers album is a classic......there is a live track on "The Roaring Silence" album,...called "Waiter, there's a yawn in my ear" which really proves my point......so worth checking out.

Excellent discovery! Manfred Mann Earth band can easily be put in psychedelic Rock (some things from Floyd) with also long Instrumental sections, Progressive it is too. A lot of human feeling everywhere with a natural technique. Manfred Mann is the guy at the Synth (Moog) organ (Hammond) and the mellotron , I believe he is among the most interesting keyboard player with a feeling you usually can't mistake with another band. (Not like Tony Banks from Genesis - more classical lines, instead Manfred have more bluesy experimental phrases). But a unusual way to play, full of catchy motives played together guitar and Synth. I like this first period also, that sounds much darker and experimental than later after 1976 with the further albums, such as "Roaring silence", "watch"(very popular over time), "Angel Station" (Full of freaking Synth solos) and "Chance" more sweet melodious space pop, maybe with even more keys and new sounds with the arrival of new technology. I believe it is even more easy listening but also were they became famous through some hits (like "blinded by the light" or "Mighty Quinn"). And definitely they got something slightly from jazz-fusion style but just a bit, improvised Rock is more present. Anyway, whatever they perform, they usually rules...

Hi again...Where has this band been ? Lol Well I have followed Manfred Mann throughout the 60's and they have had sooo many hit records in that era ...then ...in the 70's changed their name to include Earthband and became a Prog Rock group with even greater success and so many albums. This is one heck of a rabbit hole. ManFred Mann is the name of the Keyboard player and founder of the band. This is a great marathon. Loved every minute of it !! They were included in a well know 60''s movie with the title theme "Up The Junction" The album is 60's music and excellent with a number of different versions of the title track. Movie was hard hitting for it's time and starred Dennis Waterman who was in the tv series "The Sweeney" & "Minder" here in England. Byee Jim X

MMEB were most well-known for their covers - several times of Bruce Springsteen songs - which often raised mediocre songs to hit status ("Blinded By the Light", "Spirits In the Night", The Mighty Quinn") - but their less-known work (at least based on radio play) was frequently excellent. "Solar Fire" and "Nightingales and Bombers" are my favorites (at least partly out of nostalgia) - and "Time Is Right" is one of my favorite songs ... I still haven't got the count of that percussion intro down, but then it breaks into the blues-based first vocal section in 5/4, then goes to the improv over 17/8 before returning to the 5/4, and takes us out with the echo (which gets slower with each repeat - at the time that was an engineer twiddling a knob, but is smooth & even!)

And 2006. Spotify have messed that up so you have to look at "Appears on". Its been added to "Manfred Mann" on Spotify. But its released as Manfred Mann 06' and Manfred Mann's Earth Band. He used Manfred Mann 06' I guess since its not the OG Manfred. And he chopped it into Manfred Mann 06' and the Earth Band for different songs. As he didnt think all songs suited the members of the Band. But listen to Get Me Out Of This. Thats an awesome song and is Manfred Mann's Earth Band.

Before they got wrapped up like a douche, Manfred Mann's Earth Band composed one of my favorite songs from the era, which also happens to be from Holst's Jupiter: Bringer of Jollity in their very uplifting song, "Joybringer" which is what y'all are, and what we all are I bet. Before all that, and before most things, Manfred had a huge hit called "Quinn the Eskimo". Both songs are essential. There's a version of the band playing Joybringer on a British TV show. Very nice boys. Used to cut my grass.

... don't worry, you're not the only one who forgets - I looked at the titles and wasn't sure if I knew any ... and then the music starts #1 - ah ja ... #2 ok # 3 know this as well, and #4 oh yeah . 4 out of 4, I know them all, but haven't listened to them in ages.... shame on me😆 I also had to smile, when you said, maybe only a few know this band. From 1975 to 1982 they were very successful in Germany, 3 Top 10 albums and if you ask this generation for songs you'll hear : Mighty Quinn, Blinded by the light, Davy's on the road again, all still played on the radio. The songs that Eric picked are the real deep cuts of early MMEB ... very recognizable latest when Manfred Mann played his keyboard solos. And the songs also shows where he comes from : you guessed right, he started as a jazz musician in 1964. Eric, great job 👍 so what will come next 🤔 And what do you think about MMEB with Chris Thompson on vocals ?

I only have "The Roaring Silence" (1976) and "Chance" (1980) which _Trevor Rabin_ of Rabbitt and YES Produced. So I REALLY need to get more albums. They have a few hits that people are mentioning, or tracks that were popular on FM AOR Radio, and have covered "3" Bruce Springsteen tracks (and made them better in my opinion). You may be thinking "Mars: Bringer of War" from Holst? Which lots of bands have done as an intro, and Emerson Lake and _Powell_ have done the entire piece :). - Really nice deeper cuts Greybeard! Thanks Nick!

Hi Tony, I'm "shocked" 😆 only 2 records of MMEB ? Didn't these make you curious about, what played MMEB before ? I don't know the first album, but albums #2 - 5 with Mick Rogers on vocals are worth to be listened to or to be bought. My first MMEB song was Joybringer, only released as single and on samplers. The "biggest" songs of these albums were Father of day, Father of night, which to me seems to be known by every rock fan in Germany, the other is Spirits in the night, to which Nick already reacted. I like MMEB with both singers, the period with Chris Thompson is more commercial but still so many great songs. As I wrote in the Spirits ... reaction, MMEB was in the second half of the 70s as successlful as Supertramp and Alan Parsons ... so have fun with older MMEB 🤘have a nice weekend

Manfred Mann is a South African who moved to the UK and had a career in the 1960s as a popstar; the Earth Band was more proggy and jazzy. Mann also famously played the synthesiser on Uriah Heep's epic track July Morning from their cracking Look at Yourself album (1971)

As I read-up on the UH Look at Yourself bio, it amazes me that Ken Hensley only played the Hammond Organ and Piano, no wonder why Mann guested with the Moog.

I own a fair amount if Manfred Mann, but haven’t found a copy of Solar Fire yet, so this was a treat. They are one of my favorite 70’s bands. I was introduced to the band by their Bruce Springsteen cover, Blinded By The Light, as many people were. They did a lot of cover songs they took to a completely different place from the original. I generally don’t like covers on studio albums, but Manfred Mann really makes a cover into their own song, so I look forward to hearing what they do with other people’s songs. Definitely, check out Blinded By The Light. It’s amazing.

Hello again: This is almost heresy considering how a fan of Springsteen I am, but I prefer Manfred Mann's Earth Band's rendition of Springsteen's Blinded By The Light to that of Springsteen himself. If you haven't broadcast it yet, would you consider doing so. Thanks. I love you and your wife.

Interesting bunch of songs, definitely not the biggest commercial top hits of MMEB . Very avant-garde even to today's standards. The more easy listening album's are watch and angel station...

Found it… 5 months ago. Reaction with MMEB and Happy The Man. I thought maybe I was losing it? But now I’m concerned about you because you’re too young for dementia. 🤣 Thanks @greybeard for more MMEB I haven’t heard before.👍🏻

You yanks were really missing out on so much here. MMEB have been big for decades over here in Europe, and I've seen them live something like five times or so ever since c. 2000, more than any other band. While The Beatles, and especially their studio years, will always be my all-time number one band, MMEB and The Who keep constantly fighting for the spot of my second-favorite band, and MMEB is definitely my favorite prog band of all time. Some barbarians keep comparing them to Led Zeppelin, but I think MMEB are far more refined, deeper, and haunting, and Zeppelin were never prog as much as this. Yeah, I guess Kansas and *MAYBE* Boston may be a better comparison. I first got to know them because my dad has all their vinyl albums from the 70s, from their self-titled debut up until 1979's uber-prog, enigmatic crossword puzzle "Angel Station". The first two albums can savely be skipped, where only two or three songs hint vaguely in the direction they would go afterwards. It's their third album "Messin' " where things really get going, which was when they started doing concept albums, most of them being about outer space and ecology, sometimes mixed with a song making biblical or religious references here and there (just like "Buddha"), the latter basically as another form of fantasy, as well as some minor social criticism, with songs such as "Black and Blue" or "Chicago Institute". Between "Messin' " and "Angel Station", it would be very, very hard for me to pick a favorite album of theirs. "Messin' " is both solemn and colorful, "Solar Fire" is so cosmic, "The Good Earth" is so mellow and sometimes melancholic, "Nightingales & Bombers" sounds pretty dark compared to its predecessors, "The Roaring Silence" is sorta the perfect blend between arcane, virtuous, whimsical prog, commercial appeal, and Manfred's keen ear for classical melodies, "Watch" could be their most mercurial album, and "Angel Station" is this dark, escherian crossword puzzle which sounds like Manfred is sitting somewhere in a corner, brooding and full of angst and melancholia about the new decade ahead, during the final hours vefore midnight on New Years' Eve 1979. Their next album, "Chance" (1980), while still being unmistakeably Manfred with so many catchy tunes and arrangements, seems much more commercial and shallow-ish in comparison, more like his soft-pop days of the 1960s prior to MMEB, or maybe a bit like ELO. I've only ever listened to those albums after "Chance" once, and musically, they left me entirely unimpressed. As much as I appreciate their theme of Manfred's growing involvement with the anti-apartheid movement in regards to his native South Africa.

Here is some Good News that is worth eternal life. Romans 5:8-11 "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life; and not only so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation." Mark 1:15 “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” 🙏 What is the Gospel? Read 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. John 3:16-17. You can read it online if you don't have a Bible.
