What was it like hearing a lot of this 60s and 70s music when it first came out? I heard of Rush before this album came out but I didn't have any of their albums. We had a couple great rock stations where I grew up that during off hours, mostly night they would play all KINDS of music including what you would call fusion, almost jazz. The first time I heard this I was driving alone after getting off work late in the eve, taking the Long Way Home, and THIS song comes on the radio. Now, the long way home was driving around a small lake, so almost no traffic, no lights, just a slow drive to calm the mind so just like a person who gets to lay on a bed and put on headsets and listen to this for the first time my brain was allowed to engage with the music, and having listened to classical, jazz, rock and prog rock through my childhood, this song was a musical feast. I proceeded to the record store the next week and bought every Rush album up until that point and learned the lyrics of almost every song on every album, except the first. I only liked about 3 or 4 songs off the first album.

That bit you were dancing to was from was the 1936 song "Powerhouse". Of course Rush gave credit where it was due. Most of us know that from Loony tunes cartoons, whenever they showed a factory or some sort of Rube Goldberg machine.
@JohnBrooking43 жыл бұрын
Actually, what I read was that they didn’t give it credit initially, because they just didn’t know where it was from. They’re of the age that they probably heard it first on Looney Tunes, as I did. But they did step up and give the composer, Raymond Scott, credit after his estate contracted them about it. Scott was an interesting guy himself. He sold the rights to most of his 1930’s music to Warner Brothers, then went on to be an early pioneer in advent-garde electronic music in the 1950’s and ‘60’s. That Powerhouse bit has been used in tons of other songs, including by another of my favorites bands, They Might Be Giants (“Rhythm Section Want Ad”). The Wikipedia entry does has a huge listing of references. Raymond Scott’s original, quoted section starts at 1:14: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5KmYamEgcl_rLs

I agree with all the above, you guys are spot on and also one of my favorite instrumentals. Lex your comment imagining lying down with headphones on listening to it on vinyl resonated, that was me! 40+ years later the music is still relevant and influenced many other artists along the journey. They made the music they wanted to make and "Rolled the Bones", if you continue down the rabbit hole you will understand that reference. I think seeing people, especially young people, enjoy music that I honestly feel can be life changing. I suggest 2112 if you haven't already.

That show was so good, they are consumate live performers, that is where they really shine as artists. Thank you for sharing your video reactions of one of my all time favorite bands. Keep the faith

FYI Geddy is playing the keyboard parts with his feet There are more bands than can be counted that were inspired and influenced by Rush. As to your comment on Alex and his guitar work one of the greatest comments came from the Late and Great Eddie Van Halen. He was asked how it felt to be the worlds greatest guitarist. He responded "Not sure You would need to ask Alex Lifeson" 2112, Xanadu, Natural Science, etc.... Lots of great options But make sure you get to some of their later work. Lots of people get lost in their early years, but they did great music through out their 40 yrs journey. To see how well they rocked even at the end you must do: Headlong Flight and The Garden

Alex is playing the synths with his feet as well. In the very beginning all the synth in your right ear is Geddy, and the synth in your left is Alex. You should see the live '78 version.

This is the 2nd vid of you two I have watched. This is one of my all time favorite bands and one of my favorite records and one of my favorite songs. I have seen Rush live many, many times over the years. I'm still not over the fact that I will never see them again. Neil was one of the greatest ever, as are the rest of the band. I saw Lex get chill bumps during a song I have heard thousands of times. It made me cry. To think you are experiencing something for the 1st time that I have loved for so many years made me very emotional in the moment. I wept for Neil I think for the first time since his passing. Music can heal us all.

I was so happy to see you hear this for the first time. It’s totally a magic song. They are all just killing it and the arrangement is awesome and totally fun. But Alex is sublime throughout - the first slow solo is probably my favorite of all time - so expressive and exciting without playing too many notes.

Someone below listed all of the "parts" of the song. If you listen to it again while following the Roman Numeraled sections, you can actually "see" in your mind the story that is being told. The song is a dream that Alex (nickname "Lerxt") had set to music. He was known to have bizarre dreams, and I guess this one was particularly bizarre so it inspired a song. The section titled "Monsters!" actually resulted in a copyright snafu that was settled by the band, who paid (I believe) the widow of the composer as it was "the right thing to do" as stated by them. It seems they borrowed the riff from a Bugs Bunny cartoon (one with the loveable "Marvin the Martian" character. You can find the clip on KZbin!). The section invokes not big, scary monsters but rather the comic type reminiscent of "Monster's Inc." or any number of Disney movies. The dreamy section is called "A Lerxt in Wonderland", in which Lerxt (Alex) finds himself in an "Alice in Wonderland" type dreamscape. Listen again with this new context and you'll be blown away ALL OVER AGAIN !
@Knightveil3 жыл бұрын
I was going to mention about the copyright issues they ran in to with this song. The piece in question is called "Powerhouse" by Raymond Scott and the section played here is often referred to as "Powerhouse B", being the second part of the two-part song. (The first part, "Powerhouse A", was often used in older cartoons as background music during chase scenes.)

I'm sure some will mention that this song is based on Alex's dream. The way I understand it, Alex would mention his dreams to Geddy and Neil and they would have a laugh about it. If you listen again, you will know the point he's falling asleep and the point where he's dreaming. The section called "Monsters", is not your nightmarish dream but rather a comedy skit like dream. Just picture cartoon character monsters lol. During this section of the song, Neil wanted the song to have a big band feel. Hence the jazzy flavors and for me Alex's guitar solo sounds like the horn section. Also note each riff acts like a hook as the song moves along and then they play each riff in reverse order to end the song. I take that as the process of going to sleep and waking up. Actually, Rush does that often in their songs, they will take you on a journey using multiple riffs and bring you back to the original riff. Check out Xanadu (if you haven't already), a huge Rush Epic.
