Nicko McBrain talks to Neil Shukla about what makes his iconic 'galloping' style work so well with Iron Maiden, and how he locks in with Steve Harris. He also talks about his early drum influences, and gets candid on how long he will rock with Iron Maiden.

ABOUT NICKO MCBRAIN:
At the age of ten, Nicko McBrain started to play drums with pots, pans and other kitchen utensils, before, to his parents' dismay, he began drumming on the gas cooker with a pair of knives and chipped off the paintwork. McBrain recalls that he was 11 or 12 before his father bought him his first drum kit, "which was basically one snare, one tom-tom, one cymbal, two drumsticks and a pair of brushes." He soon started playing Rolling Stones and Beatles covers with school bands, before he began regularly playing "pubs and weddings". Having played in small pub bands from the age of 14, Nicko McBrain originally paid his bills with session work before he joined a variety of artists, such as Streetwalkers, Pat Travers, and the French political band, Trust. He joined Iron Maiden in time to debut on their fourth album, Piece of Mind (1983), and has remained with them since, contributing to a total of 13 studio releases

I was lucky enough to book into the same hotel as Iron Maiden when I went to see them in Brimingham about 10 years ago. The night before the concert my mate and I spent the last of the evening and some of the morning drinking with this man. He is an absolute gentleman and one of the funniest people I have ever met. The next night, after the concert, he approached me and my mate, stopped for a quick hello, and asked my mate to 'pull my finger'. You know what came next. Genuinely nice guy!

@@kalidesu a bass player would never be able to play the drums because he's only able to barely handle 4 to 6( depending on the type of bass guitar) strings. Drumming is definately a harder challenge than being only a bass player ;P..... Nah i'm only joking. Drummers would alsoo jump in and play the bass if the bass player screws up just as much as bass players jump in once we drummers fail. Actually the singers and guitar players can be as good as they want.. what matters the most is how the bass player and the drummer are playing because they, not the guitar player nor singer, give the song the beat and the base and a good base is what matters the most.

@@carmenmirandajunkie Thank you from another drummer and singer. Have you ever wondered why the drums are always in the back? Because if you place them up front we would steal the show and make the singer and guitar player look silly because while they need to walk around and do a lot apart from only playing their instrument to gain attention , all it takes us to gain attention is to sit down on a tiny, uncomfortable and cheap stool and start to play.

I love Nicko. He fills up a whole rhythm section. His beats are always danceable and each song is unique and instantly recognizable. I already ordered Senjitzu on CD. I will buy the tour Blu Ray when it comes out. Nicko is so good Steve often plays his bass as well as Dave or Adrian, right in the melody or harmony instead of rhythm. Janick only adds to the rich sound. I have been a fan since 1984 when someone played Piece of Mind for me. Love at first listen. They took over my mind and installed Eddie in my brain and I was whole. (🤩)

Your with the best Nicko 🥁 Having grown up with the late Ginger, Bonham and Moon when I was very young was an honour listening to these awesome drummers. And Nicko you certainly follow in their footsteps Up The Iron 🥁 How's Sooty ? Perhaps he's on Eddie's lap 🤣

I.maiden 4 life eddie This is another false rumor. Watch all the bootlegs of Maiden till Dec 1982, never did Clive miss a beat! The guy was extraordinary! Steve was the reason. Let's just say part of the reason was Clive's dad died and the man wanted a little time off. Clive was a very humble man, not just a amazing drummer. Sad very sad he was such a nice guy..

@@m42037 I see the number of the beast tour in 82 and they replaced burr with nicko just before that tour started up. I do have the the history of iron maiden where Steve told the story on Clive burr and he didn't have the strength to do the world tour

I.maiden 4 life eddie I have seen it too and Clive was fantastic! You can watch Hammersmith right here and many bootlegs. I was 16 back then. Clive played with them till Dec 82. His father dying was very hard on him and needed a little time off, this is what you're talking about. He did many of the beast on the road dates, 181 dates to be exact! Clive was more intricate end of story

Great interview, nice and funny guy. But above all an amazing drummer. But about the comments; interesting thing. When I go deeper into the comments, the mood changes somehow from nice comments and interesting statements to only bashing/whining about who's better: Clive Burr or Nick McBrain ...

Having played in a band I love this even more. I know exactly what he’s talking about with mistakes and the reactions and the guitarists telling of t he drummer for always playing a part wrong and the tempos being out. But still laughing about it all and staying mates. Awesome to hear that even the very best do it and still do after years of touring. Brilliant.

Anyone with half an ounce of musical sense and knowledge will agree that on Book of Souls, the two members of the band that truly stand out are Bruce and Nicko. Also, while not having the groove that Clive (rest his soul) had, Nicko's style and sound has made a way bigger impact on Maiden's sound. Yes, he's played on more albums, but come on... first song of his first record with band? Where Eagles Dare. Way to make an entrance. Is he the best? No. Is he a tasteful player with a totally unique sound? Yes. He's been seen playing some songs from other bands, and frankly, it's not that good. Why? Because these songs don't fit him. He plays a Zeppelin song on some vid floating out there, and goddamn it, he manages to make it sound like a Maiden song. Which is all sorts of wrong, but that goes to show how unique his style is...
