Tom Sellek et al getting laughs at the expense of a Jaguar E-type - now (Oct '15) in equal condition worth much more than Magnum's Ferrari 308 GTS!

Such a funny series. Out of all the 80's tv series this was hands down my favorite. The acting was incredible, the chemistry among the actors was awesome

The first time l sat in a 1966 E-TYPE it was like climbing in to a cockpit of an airplane.....always thought The E-TYPE was built ahead of its time.....now 41 years later l still own the car....Enzo Ferrari told the Jaguar founder William Lyons at the Geneva Motor show "this is the car l always wanted to build ".....

Poor old Jag. it's revolutionary 60's car, didn't stand a chance against the 80's corvette but I'd have that lovely old Jag any day in any condition. Oh, my daily summer runner is a 90's Z28. Jag now worth what ... £120k - £200k?

Love how they put a cushion for Selleck to sit on, so it looks like he's way too tall for the car. In reality, they have so much leg room it's not funny.

This isn't the only TV show or movie that depicted the Jaguar this way. Movies like Love Letters or That's Life in some way had similar scenes, which were perhaps inspired by the real situations the screenwriters, or producers, or directors had with their own Jags.

I would rather have the E type. Even if its a garage find, it's now worth 5-6 times more than that vette.

English cars voltage is reverse polarity. I worked on them in1990, great video.
@Nickolas526 жыл бұрын
Many English cars were typically "Negative Earth", aka grounded via the positive terminal of the battery. There was an almost wholesale switch over to negative ground beginning in the mid-60s with the introduction of alternator charging systems, replacing generator systems. For the E-type, the switch over happened with the advent of the 4.2 litre engine in late 1964, so Sellek's E was negative ground.

The E-TYPE. Never had a fan belt ( they were cooled by electric fan ) as the so called mechanic on the show quoting he replaced the fan belt...
@Nickolas527 жыл бұрын
Good catch, and right on. No fan belt. Two other belts though, driving the water pump and the generator/alternator depending on model year. AC cars additionally complex.
@philpreston86586 жыл бұрын
A belt ran the generator and water pump. Use of the term "fan belt" is pretty generic.

you must always buy two british cars...one to drive and the other for parts,,and dont forget a large net to catch the parts that fall off while going down the road
@Nickolas527 жыл бұрын
I made one MGB from three. That was in the late 70s when they were cheap, like E-types. People bought them and drove them and didn't maintain them. They broke down a lot. And parts were expensive because they had to come from England and the British Motor Corporation was not especially good at supply management. Not so now. Once you have a British sportscar up to snuff and then maintain it, you only need one to deliver maximum smiles per hour.

Brett Wyatt I'm sure he was supposed to but then Jag said No. Jaguar PR people were not great at making friends in hollywood back in the 70s and 80s. This is why Roger Moore drove a Volvo p1800 in The Saint. The producers went to Jaguar and asked politely for a E-type and Jag said Fuck you and as the producers were walking out the gate Volvo said Hey, got a car for ya.

Well what you have to remember is he's 6 foot something, the moss gearbox doesnt have a synchromesh for 1st gear, it had 3 tripple choke SU carbs, and they were built on the cheap and thus had alot of problems. as Jag wasnt making that much money on them, about 10 cents to every dollar back then basically, banking on volume to make up for the 10% profit and British leeland was so bad back then that cars made at certain factories could be worse or better based on who made them. and Jags made pre 1965 before british leeland were better than the post ones, and this is one of the post ones. and its been about 50 years, 30 years since the 1980's so that was a 20 some year old car that wasnt worth anything, and the 308 has gone up in price, considerably to the point where it was worth 2 testarossa's and back then it had fix on fix on fix, and Hawaii is the other side of the planet from england, so just try and find parts for it without the use of the internet, not to mention anyone who can even work on that thing. and also it looks stupid on him, like a giant clowncar lol and the car was only good for a 120 mph, a C3 was 145 with a 454, the 308 was 155 in its early form of 255 HP before they got strangled by the smog things, hence why they used an early 1977 or 1979 car for the first 3 years. so while its easy to point and laugh and say you so stupid in retrospect here, what you have to remember is the circumstances of it and its not a series 1, and we dont know what the liters were. so for all we know it was a bondo dog on its way to the crusher before they saved it here for use in the show, much like they did with the inspector morse jaguar.
@Nickolas528 жыл бұрын
Well, not quite. This particular car is a US-Spec Series 2 with dual Zenith-Stromberg carbs and all-synchromesh 4-speed gearbox. The later cars are actually a little better sorted out than the earlier ones with better brakes, better cooling system and other improvements. I have owned a Series 1½ E-type for over 34 years and can tell you it is by no means a poorly built car. It is an amazing car in all respects. The fact that I've kept it this long attests to that.
@skrutinizr93727 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind that most of what Mr. Smith posted was complete gibberish pulled out of his arse. The car used in that episode was sprayed with a dull coat and he sat on a pillow to exaggerate the size. That car is still in Hawaii, albeit a different island now. The value is right in line with 308's varying from $50K for a ratty driver to well into six figures for low mile pristine ones.

@Nickolas526 жыл бұрын
If money's what you're after and all things equal, yes. Value comes down to condition. Given the choice, to pass up a good S2 for a clapped up S1 is surrendering to a paradigm. The S2s are in some ways evolved and others (courtesy of the US 1968 Federal Regulations ) devolved but they are overall better cars in every way but the aesthetic.
