My memories with Classic Space are a bit unorthodox compared to most others, as the wave was easily a decade before my time. However, when I was 7, I was hospitalized with a ripped appendix (long story), and, while I was resting there in my room recovering from the removal surgery for what felt like an eternity (it was probably two to three months, I am not sure, enough to feel like an eternity to a 7 year old), my aunt brought me something she had come across in her attic, something she might have bought for a birthday decades ago but simply forgot about it or something. And, as she knew I was a Lego fan, and knew the drab hospital walls were boring, she brought it to me: A little cardboard package with a blue spaceship on it. The 918 Classic Space Transport. I *knew* even back then it was ancient, and gleefully opened the still-sealed box, and then, sitting on a hospital bed, the blank, white-with-grey-pinstripes blanket my workbench, I carefully assembled it. Just as I had done with many sets before. This was roughly around the time of Attack of the Clones, so, in my childish mind, my closest comparison was a Jedi Starfighter, just blue. Suffice to say my aunt got a big hug from me that day. I cherished that thing for years afterwards, but sadly lost it when I moved out of my mother's house about a decade ago. But, even now, whenever I see the trans-yellow windows and blue, blocky structures on grey plates, I am always overcome with a sense of nostalgia, because I remember the time I was suffering in hospital, and my aunt brightened my day immensely and helped make the rest of my stay a bit more enjoyable. I know, this probably sounds like some sort of sob story, but that was honestly my experience with it. I have a similar association with the 2003 Makuta set, as my grandma bought me that one for much the same reason, but the Classic Space Transporter sticks out the most, as it forever linked the iconic Classic Space aesthetic with the memory of that one day at hospital.

The Galaxy Explorer, Forestmen hideout, and Renegade redos make me wish LEGO hadn’t discontinued Ninjago Legacy and instead expanded “Legacy” to its own range covering everything in LEGO’s history. Space’s many iterations, Castle’s many iterations, Rock Raiders, Power Miners, Chima, Agents, Ultra Agents, Alpha Team, Adventurers, Exo-Force… heck, even Bionicle if they felt like taking that chance again. Not only would it be fun for us old-timers, but it’d allow new generations to experience a little bit of what we grew up with.

I came up with a plot for a Lego Benny movie where he is sent on a mission to stop the Blacktrons from harming an Alien civilization (Who would be made out of clay. since there were no lego aliens back then.) The film woukd also explain how Benny cracked his Helmet, and the whole film is revealed to just be a young Finn's Dad playing with his Lego. But since Lego left Warner Bros to make Movies with Universal, this could likely never happen.

You once said Nick that Lego space used to be like Lego's version of Star Trek, and I think you're right. I think that's the appeal of classic space. There's a place for combat centered themes, but the lack of exploration takes away the draw and majesty of space. Also the different colors of the astronauts being tied to their role is totally a Star Trek thing lol.

2:13 You could interpret their yellow skin tone as their face under a visor. Also, I like to interpret the Classic Space astronauts as Futuron astronauts in heavy duty spacesuits, with the black “spies” being Space Police 1 officers.

I really enjoyed this episode! The Galaxy Explorer remake was my favorite set of 2022 & I loved the Blacktron remake this January! Hopefully we see more space sets like these in the future like a Space Police 1 remake or the Exoplanet Explorer which is in the BrickLink Designer Program Series 2 vote now. It was nice hearing about the origins of Lego space since I only grew up with the most recent original themes like Galaxy Squad & Space Police 3. Also, after I got the Daily Bugle set last May, this series is the thing that really got me back into LEGO after I stopped in 2017. I’ve since watched every episode of the series & it’s one of my favorites out there, Lego or otherwise.

I think the more jumbled later classic space design works for a ship designed by Benny, and I'm not talking about his personality Benny is a blue spaceman, therefore he was not released with the original 1978 lineup (and LL928 that directly precedes his ship), but in later sets years later, which makes sense, Benny is always described as a "1980-something space guy", not as a "1970-something space guy"

I grew up with my dad’s old LEGO collection. I was like 5 and he came back with a big tub of pieces, a majority of those being from Classic Space. The first set he put together was the Star Patroller, and that continues to be my favorite ship design from the line. I remember using a site to find instructions of all these older sets. I remember me and my dad put together an even larger Galaxy Explorer, not unlike the new one they released (which we also purchased two or to have one of the alternate builds as well as the main set). This video gives me massive nostalgia because it’s been around a decade in a half since I first experienced the line and it still makes me smile. Keep up the good work!

Great timing. This monday I built the remake of 928. Although I'm personally getting a bit sick of the constant Classic Space homages, it was a nice set and finally something to do with original themes. It took me until now because 100 euro is still relatively expensive for me right now. It was a long trip to work towards it, but it was worth it! (I got one second-handed). That also explains why I don't own a single Monkie Kid set. They're exclusively full-priced here and none strike me as worth the relatively high prices.
@NickonPlanetRipple Жыл бұрын
One thing I've noticed with MK is they tend to be more worth it the bigger the sets are. Most of the smaller ones after overpriced, but on average the big ones have good price-to-piece ratios and are HUGE. It's only the latest wave that's kind of...... egregious, like many lines were this year. And just after I insisted we wouldn't see another Lego price hike in the 2022 special. Sigh.

I think Space Police 1 will be the next "neo classic space" set to release if they decide to continue with these throwback sets. There's alot of trans red window pieces released lately which Space Police 1 uses. They could also go back to classic space and remaster one of those late-in-the-theme grey and trans dark green sets with the black classic spacemen, since trans dark green windows have also been re-released recently. Hell, they could also go down the route of Space Police 2 since they also use trans dark green windows

I think more people are upset about the progress-bar (wich I also don't hear much about) and that the frontpage of the Instruction doesn't look like the package anymore (wich I fully agree to). I think green spacemen are engineers, like you said Pink are chefs (or lenny is the only pink one and he mixed his whites and reds, but i like to imagine chef because every space expedition needs someone to feed them) Orange, being the rarest, i like to imagine as captains, or some other high rank And brown, i imagine are janitors, or "civilians"; the families of spacemen who hold important jobs, who might not have any specialization themselves. Purple, being the newest spaceman color to properly exist, i have no thoughts on, partially due to a lack of a "canon" release
