I absolutely LOVE this movie. I've lost count how many times I've watched it, but it never gets old for me. I identify with Lydia so much. "I, myself, am strange and unusual." Yes girl. Yes. Especially when I was younger, but even now. I'm almost 50 now but I still feel like I don't fit in with most of the people I know because I like weird things, dark humor, rainy days, scary movies, ghost hunting, etc. When I really geek out about the things I like, I get some strange looks from people. LOL It's okay though. I like my strangeness and I have people in my life that can appreciate it even if it's not their style. So glad you enjoyed this one so much. A classic for sure! This is one of my favorite comedy fantasy horror films Originally, this was going to be a dark horror film. It's revealed in the first draft of the script, where Beetlejuice was going to be played by Sammy Davis Jr, (Dudley Moore and Sam Kinison were considered) and he was going to be a shapeshifting demon, whom takes the form of several creatures like a leprechaun, a demonic Santa Claus, a short Middle Eastern man presumably a genie,, a winged dragon, and a giant rabid squirrel, whom would try and rape Lydia after killing her sister Cathy, after she befriended the ghosts, Adam and Barbara. The Deetz family and the Maitland's then perform an exorcism to send Beetlejuice back to hell. The Maitland's then live in a miniaturized version of their house, Cathy is brought back to life, and the Deetz family return to New York.

The year this movie came out, I had to have seen it 10 times in the theaters, it's a movie with sooo much going on in the background you might miss it the first time watching. In the scene where Barbara and Adam are talking over Charles while he sits with his feet up reading a magazine, subscriber cards fall out of the magazine, and every time he turns a page, more fall out, it never ends. In the scene in Juno's office with the football players, there's a mirror behind Juno, and reflected in it, you see what looks like a theater audience of dead people, skeletons, etc., which is supposed to be a reflection of the audience watching the movie, in the Beetlejuice world. There's just endless Easter eggs in this one. If you haven't seen it, Pee-wee's Big Adventure was Tim Burton's first full length studio film, it's where he first started working with Danny Elfman, and it's also just as unique as Beetlejuice is, it's definitely worth a watch.
@HobGungan2 жыл бұрын
A great story from the making of is that at one point the executives suggested changing the name of the film to "House Ghosts". Tim Burton, recognizing how dumb and generic that was, derisively countered that they may as well call it "Scared Sheetless". When the execs seemed to actually consider that one, he threatened to jump out the window if they dared go through with it. Thus, the film remained "Beetlejuice".
@kaizerlith70702 жыл бұрын
There was a cartoon to Beetlejuice as well. Though it is very different from the movie. Adam and Barbara are never mentioned and it mainly focuses on Lydia and Betelgeuse adventuring around in the afterlife. Lydia is alive it's she just hangs out with him as they are friends in the cartoon. The art was pretty stylized and the opening is really good and the character just adapts well to animation with the crazy stuff he does.

There's also a subtext here that the Maitlands (for whatever reason) can't have kids- the pushy realtor lady Jane implies it in passing "it [the house] really ought to be for a couple with a family..." and trails off. Beetlejuice was a cartoon series after this and a film sequel is being filmed

If I remember correctly, this film is why some folks thought Michael Keaton wouldn't be able to pull off a good Batman. Lots of people thought he was only a comedy actor. Now...one could argue the two Michael Keaton Batman films were not very serious, but regardless of that, I think Keaton treated his role of Batman seriously and absolutely loved his portrayal. I think he disproved people's apprehension towards his versatility as an actor in these early roles 👍

I sometimes feel like I grew up during the last truly creative era of Hollywood. Not even Tim Burton makes movies like this anymore and it's desperately missed.

Perhaps even too creative. Maybe it all got used up.

@@0okamino Like many business ventures, I'm more inclined to believe that it has to do with fast, easy turnarounds and lack of interest in the artistic side of things. Too much trend-chasing and not enough risk-taking. Video games have, in many ways, suffered a similar fate.

Geena Davies is a phenomenal actress. If you haven't seen it then you might want to watch a long kiss goodnight. Brilliant movie. Tv show I would suggest is the exorcist. For some reason a lot of people haven't seen it or even heard of it, But it's a brilliant series.
