According to AI: The spell is “Priori Incantatem" is a Latin phrase that means "previous incantation". It's also known as the "reverse spell effect" . The spell is a rare manifestation of the charm "Prior Incantato", which forces a wand to show an "echo" of the last spell it performed. "Priori Incantatem" occurs when two wands with the same core, taken from the same animal, attempt to duel each other. The winner's wand forces the loser's wand to produce "echoes" of the most recent spells performed in reverse order.

Fun facts/answers to some of your questions: Harry is still living at the Dursleys and the book starts with the Weasleys picking him up to attend the World Cup. Fans of the books have long made fun of Dumbledore's "DID YA PUT YAH NAME IN DA GOLBET OF FIYAH?" because it is clearly stated "Dumbledoe asked CALMLY". Just one example of how film Dumbledore is different from book Dumbledore AND how Michael Gambon's Dumbledore is different from Richard Harris' Dumbledore. Both great, just different. The thing with Ron is that he has always had this inferiority complex. He grew up in the shadow of his siblings (mainly his brothers) and, being Harry Potter's best friend, ends up in his shadow. In the first film, he sees himself in the Mirror of Erised as head boy and Quidditch captain covered in glory. He is envious of the chance to compete for riches and glory, and the idea that Harry may not have put his name in the Goblet of Fire doesn't even cross his mind because he is so blinded by envy. That's why he's such an ass to Harry in the first part of the film. During the trial when Igor is exposing Barty’s son, he mentions that he was involved in the torture of the Longbottoms, who are Neville’s parents (which explains why he is so upset when "Moody" demonstrates the Cruciatus curse in class - because it was used on his parents). Also, during the trial, Dumbledore says that Snape WAS a Death Eater at one point but is not anymore (after he became a spy for him). Victor Krum is under the Imperius Curse (one of the three unforgivable curses) in the maze. The victim basically has no control over their actions and is obedient to whomever casted the spell (in this case Barty Crouch Jr). They are placed in a trance-like state, hence why his eyes are like that. Voldemort’s appearance is a physical manifestation of how evil his soul has become. Plus, as the heir of Slytherin, where the symbol is a snake, he has snakelike nasal slits. Ralph Fiennes (pronounced Rafe Fine+s) plays such a good villain, between this and Schindler's List (though he's definitely more terrifying in that but that's also because he was portraying an actual person who tortured and killed people). Voldemort identifies four Death Eaters by name: MacNair, Crabbe, Goyle, and Lucius. Lucius is of course Draco's father, Crabbe and Goyle are the fathers of Draco's friends and the last one, MacNair, is identified in the book as the guy who is supposed to execute Buckbeak in Prisoner of Azkaban. Remember in the first film when Ollivander says to Harry that the core of his wand was made from a feather of the same phoenix as Voldemort's (more specifically Dumbledore's phoenix aka Fawkes)? The Priori Incantatem, or Reverse Spell, effect occurs when such 'brother wands' connect in a duel. The winner's wand (Harry's) forces the loser's wand (Voldemort's) to produce "echoes" of their most recent spells performed in reverse order. So when Harry sees Cedric, the muggle from the beginning and his parents, that is the reverse order in which they were killed by Voldemort's wand. As always there are some things in the book that are not in the film. Most of it is not THAT important but one thing I love that is missing is a subplot involving Hermione forming S.P.E.W. (Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare), a group/organisation to liberate Hogwarts' enslaved house-elves. Winky the house-elf who serves the Crouch family is an important character in the book, as is Dobby (he gives Harry the Gillyweed instead of Neville). Cedric appears for a few seconds during Quidditch in Prisoner of Azkaban but it's a different actor (stuntman Joe Livermore). In the book he catches the golden snitch after Harry faints and offers to replay the match, but is declined by Oliver Wood. At least one full-scale dragon was constructed on the set, which could even blow real fire. It was created partially from the basilisk puppet seen in Chamber of Secrets. Only Harry's battle against his dragon is shown in the film but the way the other contestants stole the golden eggs from their dragons is revealed in the book. The underwater scenes were shot in a huge purpose-built tank (one of the largest underwater sets ever constructed) with a bluescreen background. Safety divers swam in-between takes with scuba regulators, to allow the actors to breathe without having to surface. Daniel Radcliffe was underwater for about 40 hours and at one point, he actually almost drowned. Also, as with the petrified figures in Chamber of Secrets, full-sized models were used for the those scenes which required the actors to keep completely still. A bit of a problematic fact about the scene where Harry is in the bath and Moaning Myrtle is all over him, is at the time of shooting, Daniel Radcliffe was only 15 while Shirley Henderson (Moaning Myrtle) was 40. While Dan was obviously not naked in the scene, switch the genders and it would be an outrage. The tongue tick with Barty Crouch Jr. was not in the book and was improvised by David Tennant. Brendan Gleeson (Moody) then added the quirk to a few of his scenes as a hint to his real identity. In one of the first takes of Hermione's "Cinderella moment" Emma Watson actually tripped and fell down the stairs. The bandmembers at the ball include Honny Greenwood (lead guitar) and Phil Selway (drums) of Radiohead. Hermione's "Everything is going to change now isn't it?" simply means because Voldemort has truly and fully returned. Lastly, Cedric's dad's cries are absolutely heartbreaking. The actor, Jeff Rawle, gave one of the best performances in the entire series!

The how he escaped azkaban it’s actually really clever, they just don’t explain it in the movie. Basically Barthy Cruoch jr’s mom was destroyed as his son ended up in azkaban and she fell into depressionn, begging her hunsband to free their child. So what happened is that Barthy Crouch and his wife went to azkabaan to visit their son, but as they did that they had polyjuice potion. As they got into the cell, Barthy’s mom morphed into him and remained in jail at his place, while he was exting, morphed as her. Dementors are the guards of Azkaban but they’re blind, they cannot see. They just feel the state of souls. They felt a healty soul and one near to death enter, one healthy and one near to death exit. Later on Barthy’s mom died in azkaban and they buried her. Meaning that Barthy Crouch jr is officially dead, and nobody, except Barthy Crouch, knew he was still alive. Azkaban could never know they missed a prisoner

Hermione keeps Rita in the jar until the end of the school term, when the Hogwarts Express returns to London. She then forces Rita to promise to "keep her quill to herself for a full year". Also, in the book, it's revealed that Fudge has a dementor perform "the kiss" on Barty Crouch Jr before they can learn what he knows about Voldemort's plans, and Dumbledore telling Fudge that if he as Minister is unwilling to accept the reality of Voldemort's return, then they have reached "a parting of the ways." Fudge begins to perceive Dumbledore as a rival and threat to his position as Minister, and sets out to undermine the credibility of both Dumbledore and Harry as a means to keep his job.

They never mention it, but Snape joined Voldemort at 18 or 19 and he turned spy at 20, risking his life at young age. OK I promise I won't do this on every video but here goes: xD Harry's and Voldemort's wands are "twins", sharing a core. (This is mentioned in the 1st film when Harry chooses his wand: the wand-maker points out how curious and fate-like this is.) This book explains that when twin wands clash, they force their last spells to come out in reverse. So because killing Harry's parents and Cedric were the last spells from Voldemort's wand, it allowed Cedric and Harry's parents ghosts to appear. This is the Deus Ex Machina that saves Harry. (You'll also see that Voldy stops using his old wand in future films, realizing this.)

To be fair Sirius is still considered the only person to have escaped Azkaban at this point, and it took him 13 years. He did it by starving himself then turning into a dog to squeeze through a hole he made, then swimming miles to the shore. Barty's escape is darker: her mother drank the transformation (polyjuice) potion to swap places with him, and'd eventually die in his place (since Dementors are blind (they only sense emotions), they never noticed. Barty Sr. who felt responsible for everything kept it a secret, so he killed him before he could decide to talk.

Regarding the comment about how easy it is to escape azkaban, a small lesson on the books. Dementors feed on every happy thought draining a wizard of their magic and leaving them husks filled with their guilt and negative thoughts, someone feeling that way has no hope or desire to leave, they can barely eat or move. Sirius was innocent, and armed with this was able to resist falling into full despair but still weak. When he given a visit by fudge at the prison, he saw on the front page the weasleys holiday to Egypt and also with Ron, the rat. Filled with purpose he was able to get out of the prison. Now crouch jr was 100% guilty and under the full control of the dementors so how did he escape...with help. His mother was dying and so her and the father concocted a plan, they brought her in to visit, a weakened dying human, then placed her in the cell for her to die and walked out with the son. From the dementors pov a dying human entered, a dying human left, so no escape. The body was buried and the escape never noticed.

Just FYI, your comment was probably misunderstood by the reactors. This is because “public school” in American English means a “state school” (basically a school funded by tax dollars and run by the government). In American English, we call the British termed public schools “private schools” (because you have to pay to go usually and therefore the school is run by private funding). I know it’s super confusing, and the British terms confused me for a very long time. So it basically boils down to this: Public school = government funded and run school Private school = public school (British definition)

OK guys, answers and explanations time. 1. Priori Incantatem You might remember that Harry's and Voldemort's wand share the same core. They are "twins". When two such wands are forced to do battle, something very strange occurs: they refuse and instead connect and try to overpower each other. The effect is known as Priori Incantatem. The stronger one will force the other one to regurgitate shadowy figures of the last spells it had performed in reverse order: the last one first. That's why the ghost-like figures of Voldemort's last victims appeared. Priori incantatem can also be performed willingly. Let's say you find a wand and you want to see what spells it performed last, you can point your own wand at it and say "Priori incantatem". The interesting question is why did Harry's wand win and not Voldemort's? After all, when it comes to sheer magical powers Voldemort is incomparably stronger than Harry. You might remember me telling you at the first movie that character and intentions matter a lot in magic. At that point Harry was ready to die, he accepted that possibility. And that's something that Voldemort was never able to do, he fears death more than anything. So Harry's courage won, it made his wand so much more powerful. 2. The protection given to Harry by her mother's sacrifice. It lives in her mother's blood, that's why Dumbledore decided to place Harry as a baby in the house where his mother's blood - Petunia - lives. As long as Harry can call that house home, Voldemort cannot hurt him there. He only needs to return there once a year. 3. Barty Junior's escape. His backstory is very complex in the book, but essentially his father got him out. His mother was very sick, days away from dying and that was her last wish. They visited their son in Azkaban, where the boy was almost dead himself due to the effect of the Dementors. They entered his cell, and both the son and the mother drank Polyjuice potion taking on each other's appearance. Then the father and the son left. Dementors can't see, they just felt that a healthy person and a dying person came, and also a healthy and a dying left. His mother died shortly in that cell and the trick wasn't discovered.

I think it helps to just think of Vold and Harrys wands meeting as creating an "echo" of the previous spells cast. The 'spirits' are like AI creations of the wand. These aren't the literal souls of those who died. The souls move on and don't come back.

the movie doesn’t really show ron’s position and the fact his anger is sort of justified by his insecurities - his older brothers are either popular or successful (bill was a head boy and charlie a quidditch captain, percy is a prefect and fred and george are popular with everyone) and ginny is the longed-for daughter, plus his best friend is harry potter (whom ron’s parents also love). he’s just an insecure 14 year old boy who felt betrayed by his best friend🤷♀️

priori incantatem is a spell that "reads" the wand's latest magic. in other words, it creates a "ghost" of that magic, but backwards... the last spells from voldemort's wand were all murders: cedric, the old man who lived in voldemort's family house and, obviously, harry's parents. they all appeared that night, only as "ghosts" of the spell.

In regards to your conversation as to whether Dumbledore was calm in the book(s) or more frantic as this Dumbledore portrayed him, as someone else mentioned in the comments, he's typically quite calm in the books, as well, and it's a big thing in the fandom how the book literally says "Dumbledore asked calmly." in the moment where movie Dumbledore practically tackles Harry, asking whether he put his name in the Goblet of Fire XD

Do remember how neville reacted being seen the spider getting tortured by the cruciatus curse in the class... How he didnt like it, why he didnt like it, it would be explained... Also, let me explain, what happened at the end of the movie... When Harry's and voldemort's wands combined, a spell named priori incantatum happened, it is a spell that happens between two wands that share the same core and since harry and voldemorts wands both came from the feather of the same creature, thats why that spell happened... Now what was that spell, priori incanctatum is a spell that made the wand of voldemort to show his previous victims, the victims being, cedric since he was just killed, the muggle caretaker voldemort kills at the beginning of the movie, Harry's parents and they took a form and they protected harry by coming out and blinding voldemort's vision which gave harry the time to run away... As harry saw his parents, he thought maybe there is a way to bring back the dead, so when at the end of the movie Dumbledore comes to his dorm, harry tells how he saw his parents and dumbledore says, priori incantatum, he knew what was going through Harry's head and immediately said " No spell could bring back the dead harry, i trust you know that"... Hope my long explanation actually makes it easier than more difficult to understand... 😅

The actress who played Moaning Myrtle, Shirley Henderson, was 40 years old at the time - but she has a knack of passing for a lot younger in roles. Also every American reacting to this film get excited at Robert Pattinson; whereas we British viewers could recite the number of (mostly) sitcom actors who appear in the film - Eric Sykes (Caretaker), Timothy Spall (Wormtail), David Tennant (Barty Crouch Jr), Roger Lloyd-Pack (Barty Crouch Snr), Frances de la Tour (Madame Maxime) and Jeff Rawle (Amos Diggory).

A bit of context. The first HP book is around 300 pages (depending of the language) and this one is around 700 so they cut things like Harry with the Dursleys, quidditch, Dobby and other things. Next book is close to 1000 pages so they cut even more in the next one. The last book is around 800 and is the only one split into two movies.

Priori Incantatem, otherwise known as the "reverse spell effect", was an especially rare manifestation of this spell that occurred when two wands with the same core (that is, taken from the same animal) attempted to duel each other. The winner's wand forced the loser's wand to produce "echoes" of the most recent spells performed in reverse order. In Voldemort's case it was the last people he killed. Cedric, the old man, Harry's mom and Harry's dad.

Another enjoyable film and in my Top 3 favorite Harry Potter films behind _Prisoner of Askaban_ and _Deathly Hollows Part 2._ My favorite thing I love from this film besides the action, musical score, suspense and emotion is physical debut of the Big Bad himself: Voldemort (He who must not be named) played by Ralph Fiennes. Interestingly, Ralph Fiennes almost turned down the audition to play Voldemort because he never read any of the Harry Potter books nor was he a fan of the first two films directed by Chris Columbus. It was Ralph's sister who has has three sons, all of whom adore the Harry Potter books who convinced Ralph about the role that, director Mike Newell was asking Ralph to play Voldemort and the rest was history.

I love that Nguyen (please correct me if spelling is wrong) loves Snape and I’m so excited to see her react to his journey throughout the series. Also Cedric’s father reacting to his death always makes me cry!! Along with other many moments to come. Also also found this explanation of the graveyard scene that best explains what happened during the duel.. As dictated by the subtle laws of wands, when a duel occurred between wizards with wand cores harvested from the same creature, simultaneous spell-casting by both parties triggered a rare, powerful effect called Priori Incantatem. Both wands became linked through a single, golden thread. Hundreds of smaller golden beams shot off from this central thread to form a cage around the duellers. The two wand holders were then forced to compete in a battle of wills by forcing golden beads of light to move along through the beam back towards their opponent. When one wand managed to overcome the other, it forced the losing wand to regurgitate "echoes" of the most recent spells it had cast, in reverse order. Also also also the book has the events of the quidditch World Cup and they completely changed the maze for the movie. In the book there are obstacles and riddles, my favorite being a mist that when Harry walked through made him feel like he was flipped upside down and walking upside down. That as well as lots of other things they cut make this my least favorite book to film adaptation. But the movie would’ve been like an hour longer easily if they added everything from the book into it. It is the second longest boook. Order is the longest book but they do a way better job of adapting that one.

@@VJP8464I think it was Mike Newell to be honest but I could be wrong. Dumbledore was way more book accurate in prisoner of askaban then Mike Newell comes along and becomes angry and aggressive. Mike Newell can be found in many interviews moaning about how long the book is, and wanted to cut things he couldn’t be bothered doing, then trying to add things that weren’t in the book like burning down the forbidden forest… he seems like a really nice guy but don’t think he had a lot of respect for the source material.

Even though I first became acquainted with David Tennant as the 10th Doctor from "Doctor Who", his titular role in the modern version of "Hamlet", Huyang, Dr. Fugitoid (TMNT 2012), and Scrooge McDuck (DuckTales 2017), to this day and when I first saw this movie I never realize that David Tennant was in "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" as Barty Crouch Jr., even when seeing him on screen I just gave him the nickname "Creepy Scottish Guy who sticks his tongue out" cause he was absolutely terrifying as that character.😝😖 Speaking of which, I also didn’t realize that was Robert Pattinson as Cedric Diggory when I first saw the film, cause I was more familiar with his later roles such as Edward Cullen in the _Twilight_ films, Bruce Wayne/Batman in _The Batman (2022)_ and the voice of the Grey Heron in the English dub for Miyazaki’s and Studio Ghibli’s latest film, _The Boy and the Heron_ than Cedric, so it took one or two films that Robert was in and then re-watching _Goblet of Fire_ till I realize they were the same actor. Even the same can be said for other actors that I first saw them in but didn’t knew their names and faces but only became acquainted with them in another film afterwards such as Robert Downey Jr. (knew him in Iron Man, but first saw him Shaggy Dog), Anna Kendrick (became familiar with her in Pitch Perfect, but was in Up in the Air, Twilight and Scott Pilgrim), Pedro Pascal (saw him in Kingsman: Golden Circle, but became familiar with him in The Mandalorian and Wonder Woman: 1984), Stephanie Hsu (saw her in Shang Chi but became familiar with her in Everything Everywhere All At Once), Mary Steenburgen (first knew her in The Proposal, but also realized she was in Elf) and of course the aforementioned David Tennant and Robert Pattinson.

Another fun fact: Dan Radcliffe was so busy filming other solo scenes (like the dragon chase sequence) that he really didn't have time to practice for the dance scene, but he was still "dear old Dan" giving it his best, as the director put it. Also, having grown up alongside these books and films, it's fascinating to rewatch them now as a teacher. Ralph Fiennes also knew they had the Voldemort look nailed when he walked down the hall of the makeup department and immediately made a small child cry.

Priori Incantatem its a Magical phenomenon that happens when two wands happen to share the same core. In this case the wand of Voldemort's and Harry's share the core of the feather of hawks the fenix of Dumbledore so when "Priori Incantatem" happened in the cemetery both wands couldn't destroy each other so the wands reveals the spells conjured mostly the forbidden curses. with that said the last spells of Voldemort were only forbidden curses: "Avada kedavra" and "Crucio" and that's why the spirits of the old man, Cedric and the parents of Harry were there causes that same wand kill all of them. Having two wands with the same core that are basically brothers they cannot kill each other but only hurt each other.
@AshleyG24601fan7 ай бұрын
The book explains that because Harry and Voldemort's wands share a core (feathers from the same phoenix), they don't work properly against each other. So their spells connected into a beam. Harry focused harder on his spell, which resulted in an effect called Priori Incantatem coming from Voldemort's wand. It shows an "echo" of the previous spells that came from the wand. That's why the older man who was killed in the beginning also shows up, in addition to Harry's parents and Cedric: those were the last spells Voldemort cast with his wand (killing curses against them). Unfortunately, the movie doesn't show the spells in backwards order like it should. It should've been Cedric coming out first, then the old man, then Harry's parents.

The end of this movie, with the fight between Harry and Voldemort, is kinda hard to translate to screen, and kind of difficult to explain without potentially spoiling stuff in later movies, but here goes...essentially, during the fight Harry's wand "forced" Voldemort's wand to reveal the last spells that it cast (something referred to as Priori Incantatem). In the sound mix, you can hear some screams before the 'spirits' start showing up, which would be the Cruciatis curses used on Harry. Then the 'spirits' show up in a particular order: Cedric, then the old muggle groundskeeper, then Lily Potter, then James Potter...the reverse order that they were killed in. I use quotes around the word 'spirits' cause they're more reflections of the people than true ghosts or spirits, the wand hasn't captured any spirits or anything like that (it's not a Frostmourne situation, if you know your Warcraft lore). Technically there should also be a reflection of Wormtongue's new hand flopping around that would've appeared before Cedric, maybe there was and it was just out of camera view, or maybe they decided it wouldn't be understood by the audience and skipped it, I dunno. The movies do a fairly good job at adapting the books, but sadly as the books get longer and longer, the movies have to pick and choose what to adapt, and some of the stuff that gets left out probably shouldn't have been, as it results in things not being well explained or understood by folks who haven't read the books (or they should've followed the footsteps of Peter Jackson and released proper extended editions for the longer books).
@emilyrln6 ай бұрын
I wonder how long it would have taken to film an extended edition, given the restrictions around child actors.

Best explanation: Harry and Voldy share twin wands, they can harm themselves but not killed. Harry said "expelliarmus" a spell to disarm. While Voldy said "avada kedavra" so because Harry's spell is ironically innofensive, Voldy's wand lost and was force to performed "Prior incantantem", that basically is regurgitate "echoes" of the most recent spells it had cast, in reverse order. If one of these spells was the Killing Curse, then a ghost of the murdered person could emerge from the killer's wand. 😊

That means that the curse used to kill them were among the last spells casted by his wand. That's why the shadow of them reappered before Harry, as the last spells reappered. Voldemorts last four spells were all killing curses. Think about that....
