It did have a little bit of a point. There was still a LOT of social pushback against women and minorities in traditionally male jobs, especially "physically demanding" tasks like police, fire, mail delivery, etc. This film was making the point that new ways of doing things aren't necessarily wrong, just different.

One funny detail that I’d never noticed until it was pointed out recently: at 19:00, when Barbara turns with the shotgun and all the cadets fall to the ground, only Tackleberry remains standing in the background. That’s because the guy knows guns so well that he realized the shotgun wasn’t pumped after it fired that first time and therefore couldn’t be fired yet.
@King-Omega-

Loved your reaction. Did you realize, when Larvell was making the strange noises, sitting on his bed, Harris looking in and shaking his head- Larvell was mimicking playing an invisible video game? That’s how a video game sounded back then. One of the strangest 80s comedies I can think of is Twins. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Danny Devito and Emma Thompson. It’s hilarious.

One of my favorite comedies ever! But I would say, the funny moments are more character based than situation based like in "Airplane", which is just a series of silly situations. (I love it, too 😉) What this movie is also doing great is, you never see "all" of a scene, for example Harris' accident with the horse or the hillarious podium scene, it's all in your head 😁 And you'll never listening to that ONE song again without smiling and thinking of the Blue Oyster Bar 😂

These movies are such nostalgia bliss. A series I probably shouldn't have been watching as a 7 year old, but it was the Eighties. One of my favourite movie memories is seeing the sequel with my dad, in a packed theater. I watched every Police Academy movie multiple times after that, up until part 5 and 6. The last time I saw a group of childhood friends is when we got together to see part 6 when I was 13 years old. We were in an empty theater and my friends threw popcorn at the screen. Silly films that made for good memories, thanks for reacting to this one.

Fun detail in the shotgun scene, with Tackleberry being the only person not to duck. Because he is a gun nut and paid attention, the shotgun hadnt been chambered after the shot, so there was no danger of it being fired again. That is why he didnt take cover as it got pointed at them.

I like that they did have some strong and varied characters, a reasonable story line and many good jokes. I could damn near write a paper on 80s comedies. They ranged from out there and over the top to family friendly and conventional, and everywhere in between. The most outrageous and over the top ones tended to fall into one of three buckets, with a fair amount of crossover. There's the absurdist: Airplane! is one of the best examples, along with the Naked Gun series. And maybe the top of the list has to be Mel Brooks's History of the World, Part I, from 1981. There's the sex comedies, like the Porky's and Nerds series, or The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. There's also Tootsie and Victor/Victoria, both about crossdressing. Those last three are all from 1982, as is the legendary Fast Times at Ridgemont High. And lastly there's the anti-institutional/'slob vs snob' comedies. Police Academy is a great example, but there's more and better. 1980 was a boom year for this subcategory, giving us 9 to 5, The Blues Brothers, Stir Crazy, and Caddyshack. 1981 gave us Stripes, of which Police Academy is clearly derivative. 1982 gave us Night Shift, and 1983 gave us Trading Places and Doctor Detroit.

Not comedies (though they have funny bits), but perhaps you could look at Batteries Not Included, Short Circuit (1 and 2), and Flight Of The Navigator, if you haven't seen them already. They are all sci/fi 80s films with a lot of heart, and four of my all time faves ever (nostalgia goggles may be part of that I admit, these were my childhood). The first, Batteries Not Included, is about living mini alien flying saucer robots who temporarily move in with the residents of an apartment building under threat of forced demolition. One of the most wholesome films I know tbh. Short Circuit 1 and 2 are are about an experimental military robot (Number 5) who gains sentience after a freak lightning strike. The films follow his exploration of life and humanity in a two part journey that is both entertaining and heart warming. The sequel is comparable to the first in quality too IMO, though the first hits a little harder I think, being the start of Number 5's life, while the second is more expanding horizons and the risks that come with it. Flight Of The Navigator is about a boy who encounters an alien spaceship, his experience, the fallout, and relationship with the alien AI controlling the ship (this one also has a sound track that has stayed with me ever since I first saw it as a little kid, its haunting and beautiful). This one has the least comedy of the four, just a couple of bits with the AI, but I like it a lot. If I were to pick just one, I'd pick batteries Not Included for all over feels.

The 3 guys chucking Barber over bridge would be charged with attempted murder, assaukt, eeckless endangerment, destruction of private property and several other crimes. After he later beats em up, he should still arrest them for those crimes.

4:32 Was this the first movie to use that gag? This was two years before Ferris Bueller did it. 4:38 Ferris Bueller did it too. 5:34 He could be describing Johnson rifles. 16:16 Undyne energy! Tackleberry was always muh fave. 18:58 Notice how Tackleberry doesn't duck because he knows there's no round in the chamber. 25:00 He probably just shot the branch to make the cat fall. 26:45 Notice the license plate. 26:57 The Gute was also in Short Circuit, along with G.W. Bailey (whose character, Skroeder, was basically Lt. Harris but with the rank of captain). Johnny Five did that same "tear out the seat to make room" gag. 34:07 Why do movie people always use the cross-thumb technique with handguns that don't require it? That technique is only useful with single-action revolvers, and that's a double-action. If you do that with a semi-auto, as movie people do, that's how you get slide-bite. Also, you can cock a double-action revolver single-action style, but it's not something you'd do in combat. 34:41 Joe Don Baker energy. 39:35 One Crazy Summer, Better Off Dead, and Revenge of the Nerds parts one and two.

I loved these movies as a kid, in the 80s us kids got to watch a lot of things that we probably shouldn't have. But it was kind of normal at the time. I really don't know what movie from then is really the most over the top comedy. Almost everyone has a scene or two or more, that you never seen anywhere and extreme. I think anyways, since I got to watch any movie I wanted then, it is hard to say really what is normal or over the top. But here is a list of some movies from the 80s, nobody really reacts to anyways, that I would like to see reacted to. 80s Comedy 1. Better Off Dead 2. Porky's 3. Revenge of the Nerds 4. License To Drive 5. Mischief 6. The Heavenly Kid 7. Hot Dog! The Movie 8. Moving Violations 9. Wildcats 10. White Water Summer 11. Summer School 12. Real Men 13. Just One of the Guys 14. Hot To Trot 15. Hardbodies 16. Vice Versa 17. Fraternity Vacation 18. Once Bitten 19. Pee Wee's Big Adventure 20. Up The Academy (MAD Magazine Movie) 21. Howard The Duck 22. Innerspace 23. Under the Rainbow 24. Teen Wolf 25. Thrashin' 26. Harry and the Hendersons 27. I'm Gonna Git You Sucka 28. Little Monsters other movies from the 80s that need to be reacted to as well. 1. River's Edge 2. The Manhattan Project 3. Project X 4. The Clan of the Cave Bear 5. The Beastmaster 6. War Games 7. Running On Empty 8. The Mean Season 9. Legend 10. Youngblood 11. Lucas

Don’t know if someone’s already said this. But I heard this film is based on fact. The makers of it, one of them had a friend in the police force who told him how once every year they were required to lower their recruitment standards and allow average people to apply to the academy. However, the police would intentionally make the training more harsh and difficult, that the recruits would drop out on their own accord.
