When you drink wine vs. giving it as a gift, the functional utility is different. You drink wine for personal enjoyment, so your value equation is going to be change in taste >= change in price. Since you haven't noticed much change in taste relative to the price, you're unwilling to spend extra money because you can get more wine, and have more enjoyment, by spending less money per bottle. When you're giving it as a gift your value equation is going to be change in expression of love/affection >= change in price. In this case as the price goes up you are creating a greater sense of enjoyment in the recipient of the gift, and demonstrating a greater level of affection. So your value equations are completely different. I assume if you ever felt comfortable enough with someone where you KNEW they preferred cheap wine for the same reasons you do, you might feel more comfortable giving them the same wine you drink and see them drink. In other words, the wine THEY enjoy.
