Before reggaeton, we called it "Rap and Reggae". I think someone would've called it reggaeton sooner or later. Cause "ton" comes from the word "montón" meaning "a lot" or "big" So eventually someone would've added the "ton" just to express "this explosion of reggae" or "this whole lot of reggae" when talking about thier song.
