I'm not sure Bespoke Battlegarb is a trap. I hear what you're saying, but in the rat deck where you hope to have swarms of rats you don't care too much if one dies. If you also regularly trigger the Celebration condition it reattaches for free. So it could be a good way to consistantly make your rats more of a threat. I think there's some potential for it there. I guess we'll see how it plays out.

Lots of the cards I list as, "Traps," have some fringe applications, but the main reason I put them as Traps is because they tend to look better than they are. Most decks aren't interested in the sort of effect Bespoke Battlegarb offers, and the card is not inherently good on its own, but because it has a lot of text it can seem better than it is and be overplayed as a result. Hopefully that makes sense!

Yeah - that explains a lot as in the RW first strike deck the equipment is pretty cool (in theory) but in the other decks it is not great. Ego with 10 faeries works out fine - but it’s never a turn 1 card as it looks and is much more a case of I’d like one to use on t3/4

I think everyone can clearly notice how strong the cursed and monster roles are (for disruption and pushing dmg) but as far as REPLACING roles, or early game goes? Young Hero is insane to me, specifically because of the value it finds off of 2 mana 3-1 units that usually might not otherwise see play (think westfold rider, also for 2-1 flyers it's excellent as well. +3/+3 on a card which usually has a second effect on it, or in a deck which runs benefits from having enchants on the field, AND then the fact that you can later bargain the role after it has completed its "ramp?" Absolutely insane value play. Especially on cheap haste units, and/or anything that wants to trade for board state

think: you can get +2/+2 or +3/+3 on a cheap tradable creature and use a combat trick/cantrip to swap a monster role on something... All of sudden your innocent 3-1 or 2-1 flyer is a 7-5 trample, or a 6-5 flyer/trample. Give or take (minus) a +1/+1 counter, depends on blocks and the pressure you're exerting and your aggro tendencies and whatnot, but I'd imagine you're finding at least +2/+2 off the young hero in almost every situation/format

I ran Rakdos in my LGS and went 2-1 felt strong, ran Rakdos twice on arena and went 3-3 and 5-3 and then I ran dimir and went 2-3 I really like red this set in limited. Also at my LGS I drafted 3 copies of impact tremors and I played 3 copies of impact tremors, unfortunately the guy beside me also took two copies because I could’ve had 5 I guaranteed would’ve played 5 lol

Another note on Cursed Courtier and other cards like it: if a card forces you to put a Cursed Role Token onto a creature you control, you can always Bargain it. If you pick a fair number of Bargain cards, that’s actually upside

You kentioned that Aquaric Alchemist's adventure can get other adventures out of the grave if they're instant or sorceries, but adventure cards are only their adventure parts on the stack. They're the main card everywhere else so Bubble Up won't see them as instant or sorseries

That’s not what I said but, I’m glad you asked for clarification. When I was talking about Adventures I was discussing the aspect of the Alchemist that let’s it get +2/+0 when you cast an Instant or Sorcery. Since lots of creatures have Adventures, a typical deck will be able to trigger the ability more easily than normal. The Aquatic Alchemist’s Adventure can only get actual instants or sorceries, so you can’t put an Adventure creature on top of your deck with it. Hopefully that clears things up!

I was only discussing sources of Mana Fixing at Common Rarity, as those are the ones that drafters will see the most frequently. It’s similar to how I only discussed Common Combat Tricks. I didn’t forget to Edgewall Inn (it just didn’t fit into the segment of cards I was talking about), and I certainly agree that it is a great source of fixing!

I am not sleeping on Ego Drain for UB because for one mana in all but the early game you have a complete answer for all of the adventure cards in this set. I would not use it if I can't get a lot of Faeries but if I do, it deals with a rampant mechanic before it gets started sometimes. Battlegarb despite being for WR I think only has a chance of mattering in RB and that is a huge maybe. I think Blue might surprise this time.

I'm still wary of using Ego Drain because the downside is pretty large without a fairy, and the best time to cast a discard effect like that is in the early turns, which you often can't do with Ego Drain. Basically, it still suffers from being a dead draw in topdeck mode, but doesn't even have the benefit of being good on turn 1. It sounds like you've got a good idea of when you want to try it though. The point of the Traps section is that they are cards that are sometimes hard to evaluate because they seem better than they are, they resemble Constructed staples when in reality they are much worse, or they seem better because of their rarity. If you have a good understanding of what you're trying to accomplish with a card than lots of cards can slot in as role players when they are typically bad.

Cut In overperformed for me at the prerelease; I'm tentatively putting it higher than Frantic Firebolt. There are some good one-toughness creatures to carry the Young Hero role like Ratcatcher Trainee, Mocking Sprite and Snarecaster Sprite

I'm a little down on Curse of the Werefox. One notable weakness versus limited allstar Hunt the Weak is you can't double-monster a creature. It's still quite good, but I think it's weaker (as is Genealogist) than Ferocious Werefox.

Another combo is between Break the Spell and The Princess takes flight. First you exile their best creature, next turn you swing with a pseudo-unblockable beater and then you play Break the Spell, destroying your own enchantment before the opponent gets back their exiled creature. In addition, you draw a card.

you dont need to play bad/niche/ card (break the spell) to make your good card work. you can do this combo with any bargain card or return saga to your hand with blue card, for example

I have to disagree with the assement of bespoke battlegarb. This is due to the celebration and rat aspect. This is going to trigger a lot and your constantly going wide. Increasing a 1/1 too 3/1. Is very powerful and will quickly allow you to be a threat

WoE seems pretty thematic and cool.. First time playing with Adventures so I dont know the ins and outs of it.. At what speed do you cast the creature card from exile? The stated speed in the card? or does it become like an ability or something like that?

You cast the creatures with normal timing, so unless the creature has Flash, you cast it during one of your main phases.

How would you rank all the roles in the set? I'd prob go monster, sorcerer, young hero, wicked, royal, cursed(on your own creature). I'm not sure where cursed roles should go I'll have to see how many creatures are reduced to nothing as a 1/1 in play, I think a lot of the time they'll be 2/2s because of other roles. Young Hero seems mostly good with other roles since you can get as many as 3 counters with young hero and then put a Royal/Monster on it and it'll keep the counters. Similar thing with wicked but only as a flat 1 dmg. I'm also miffed that you can't get rid of a cursed role token an opponent controls by putting your own royal token on it.

Interesting question. I would say that it somewhat depends on the creature you are putting the Role on, which makes it an interesting puzzle! This answer might be a little different from what you were looking for, but I would say that evasive creatures want Sorceror, big creatures want Monster, and small creatures want Young Hero in the early game and Wicked in the lategame. Wicked and Young Hero are the best with Bargain spells (and I guess Cursed on your own creature falls into that camp), and Royal seems like it would be annoying when placed on high priority targets that maybe already have Trample (like Hamlet Glutton) because those cards might be targeted by more expensive removal spells where paying extra does a lot. That being said, to truly answer your question, in a hypothetical world where every Role token got changed to one, I think I would have my one be Sorceror because Scrying is inherently very powerful and setting up a Scry engine feels like it could win a game, while the others feel powerful but not necessarily as game breaking (though Young Hero can definitely snowball an early game). That was fun to answer! Also, Cursed Role tokens would be pretty awful if they could be cancelled by the controlling player putting their own Role token on the creature. I think having the Cursed Role is interesting and the way they built the rule ensures that it will actually lead to interesting gameplay.

Tokens technically touch the graveyard before they vanish

It does trigger off of Role tokens because they technically hit the graveyard for a second. It is kind of like how when token creatures die they still trigger cards that care about creatures dying even though they don't stay in the graveyard.

I view Black, Green, and White as pretty much tied in the middle tier, so I wouldn't be worried about Rakdos taking over. Also I would say that in general Black and Red are good in Limited because they often have the best removal, so seeing them near the top is not uncommon. Finally, the color rankings is more of a tiebreaker thing than anything. In basically all cases it is still better to find the open color than to force a slightly better color that isn't open.

@@NicolaiBolas yeah, just finished the video and the advice about x/1s being especially vulnerable brings it down a little for me. I love adventure and I think that might be where I start looking for value in my draft. UW seems like it has powerful pay offs but it might be hard to assemble the synergy in a draft setting. Can't wait to see how roles perform, seems like they are the bridge between the different mechanics with enchantment/permanent/sacrifice triggers

@@ianlockard9694 Adventure is an awesome mechanic and it plays out really well in practice. I'm also really looking forward to Roles, especially in decks with lots of them. Since a creature can only have 1 Role at a time from each player, it is going to be interesting to think about trying to give a creature an optimal Role or whether it is better to just Bargain the Roles away! They look really good and fun to play with!
