I’m really liking these stun counters compared to “doesn’t untap during its controllers next upkeep”.

I think they are a really neat innovation too! They are easy to understand and they reduce some of the mental load of having to remember a card doesn't untap.

Same. I love tapping my opponent's creatures/permanents, but I tend to shy away from the "doesn't untap during its controller's next upkeep" effects because it's easy to lose track of. These stun counters will solve that and provide space for more interesting interactions and design. I'm actually kind of stoked for stun counters. They aren't going to cause any sort of seismic shift in the game, but they seem likely to greatly improve a part of the game that I'm particularly invested in.

It is funny that you mention that card, because for the vast majority of my time spent analyzing the set I thought that card gave +2/+2 and was a Combat Trick instead of a removal spell. I realized before I made my video of course, and I do think the card has a place in the format, but I just don't have time to talk about every card and I think it is a little worse than the Top Commons I listed for Red. It reminds me a little of Immolation, but being an Instant is significant upside for both gameplay and synergy purposes.

14:50, just a suggestion - to make the cards bigger on the screen, maybe a separate slide for each color so we can read them (like you had when going through the color combos and top commons)

I try to go through the Combat Tricks a bit more quickly because I don't want to spend a lot of time analyzing them. The size I use is the biggest I can while still fitting them all on the same slide. I feel like showing them all at once gives a good understanding for what each color is generally working with (like, White has 2 and Blue has 2 but Black only has 1 type of stuff). I guess maybe that isn't as optimized for watching on a mobile phone. I appreciate the feedback and I'm glad you liked the video!

At common in white there is the 4 mana 2/3 flyer that gets +1/+1 for each creature that etbs and then you’ve got the 4 mana make 3 1/1s. That all also plays nice with the 6 mana 4/4 with cost reduction by number of creatures you control.
@NicolaiBolas2 жыл бұрын
I noticed that combo too. The card that makes 3 1/1s (Captain's Call) has good synergy with some of White's other commons. One of the reasons I like Argivian Cavalier is because 2 creatures for 1 card has a lot of the same benefits (and I think Cavalier is more efficiently costed).

Wanted to add on to my earlier rules lookup so i found this in continuing reading the rules on lands and basic lands for the domain mechanic. 305.8.: Any land with the supertype "basic" is a basic land. Any land that doesn't have this supertype is a nonbasic land, even if it has a basic land type. So dual lands would not add to domain
@chickendude16952 жыл бұрын
Domain does not care about the lands themselves, just types among them

I dunno. I'm still not sold on enlist. It only adds power, it leaves you open to crack back, and enlist creatures are weaker than non-enlist. That said, I would prioritize the uncommon and rare ones. While you said the colors are all pretty close, I'm also not sold on red being first and green being last. I expect most draft decks to be forced into 3 colors due to all the multicolor kicker cards, normal multicolor, and domain. With that in mind, Green seems like the color most will fight over as their second or third color while Red seems more like a secondary color you get stuck with. With that in mind, I'm interested in what 3 color combos work best together. That way I can hopefully be more confident when I need to pivot.
@NicolaiBolas2 жыл бұрын
I believe I said that Green as a standalone color looks kinda weak but it pairs nicely with lots of the other colors. I don't usually factor color rankings into my own drafts, I just include the section because folks like it.
@ooninjapenguin72862 жыл бұрын
I find it interesting how op you seem to think enlist is, it seemed like one of the weaker abilities on first glance especially since it doesn't even work on summon sick creatures like crew.
@NicolaiBolas2 жыл бұрын
As you said, Enlist looks quite good to me (though I wouldn't go so far as to say overpowered at this point). It is just very easy for me to imagine scenarios in the midgame where I would normally be stabilized, but now my opponent gets to turn their 2/2 into a 4/2 so they can keep attacking (with a creature that would normally be pretty useless at that point). It also looks like the sort of ability where they put it onto cards that were already reasonable on their own, instead of making you pay a premium for the creature to have Enlist.

Thanks for this guide, it's very helpful! Do you think 5 color decks are viable in this format? there's a lot of fixing and a mechanic that pays you off for trying this kind of thing, so I thought maybe this format is unusual in that sense.
@NicolaiBolas2 жыл бұрын
It is going to be interesting to see. The main thing that worries me is that the fixing at Common looks a tad lackluster for such a bold strategy. The Salvaged Manaworker could actually be key for 5 color because it filters for any color of mana, but unfortunately the Manaworker doesn't actually help with Domain payoffs. Blue has a Common 1 drop that can change a land into any type of basic land, which could also help with a 5 color strategy, but you need to have the right payoffs to make the risk worth it. One other thing worth noting is that there aren't that many cards that search up the tapped dual lands, which also contributes to making 5 color weaker. My initial instinct is that 5 color decks will not come up often, but a skilled drafter could probably pull it off if they had the right incentive.

Any playability for Joint Exploration in other formats, or does an extra mana for Scry 2 make Growth Spiral unplayable? I guess that is 50% more mana needed, so it might just not be worth it outside of something like a Codie brawl deck.

@NicolaiBolas2 жыл бұрын
They will. They aren't basic lands but they have the basic land types.
@caseywilliams28562 жыл бұрын
305.6.: The basic land types are Plains, Island, Swamp, Mountain, and Forest. If an object uses the words "basic land type," it's referring to one of these subtypes. An object with the land card type and a basic land type has the intrinsic ability "{T}: Add [mana symbol]," even if the text box doesn't actually contain that text or the object has no text box. For Plains, [mana symbol] is {W}; for Islands, {U}; for Swamps, {B}; for Mountains, {R}; and for Forests, {G}. See rule 107.4a. See also rule 605, "Mana Abilities."

my personal top 5 tier list for how good archetypes are. really don't think domain will be anything noteworthy in draft and sealed. - Izzet sorcery aggro - orzhov reanimator - boros token aggro - dimir discard - rakdos sacrifice aggro thoughts? :)
@NicolaiBolas2 жыл бұрын
I have found that in most formats it is better to draft what it is open than to try and force my way into an archetype based on a predetermined ranking. That is why I don't include an archetype ranking in my Draft Guides, because I don't want to accidentally convince players to force their drafts in a particular direction. I will address some of the specific archetypes you mention though with a few extra thoughts that you may find helpful. First, I don't think that Domain has to be a super strong mechanic for the colors that use it to be reasonable, as even having Domain 2 with the potential for Domain 3 makes a lot of the cards pretty solid. Second, I will say that Izzet Spells matter aggro has typically been a finicky archetype that it takes some experience to draft well. There was a Core Set where it was excellent, and there looks to be some support here, but it takes a unique blend of good instants and good threats to be strong so I'm not sure where it will fall. Third, I don't think Orzhov is a reanimator strategy, moreso a token sacrifice deck. Fourth, the Boros deck seems pretty solid to me, as a go wide strategy with an Inspired Charge variant is a nice gameplan that is simple to execute. Fifth, Dimir is often format dependent based on how removal lines up, but it seems to have some solid cards here. Finally, Rakdos is often good based solely on good Black and Red removal, and those are present here, but it is hard to say for sure what will happen in this case. I hope this helps!
@minecraftfanaaron2 жыл бұрын
6:30 rootwalias buff ability is only once each turn, so it will never get +2 or +3, do look out for that :)
@NicolaiBolas2 жыл бұрын
Actually Rootwalla gets +1/+1 for each basic land type you control, so even though you can only activate it once per turn, if you have a Forest and any other basic land it gets +2/+2. If you are splashing and have 3 basic land types, it will get +3/+3 (and so on if you have even more basic land types). I agree that if it was only +1/+1 the card would be significantly worse, but that is not the case.
@francisSep2 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of cool defenders I would like to try, but sadly, the enlist ability that exist in 3 colors on this set makes them unplayable in draft :(
@NicolaiBolas2 жыл бұрын
I also felt like the Defenders suffered from the presence of Enlist. Creatures that don't have the power to trade with Enlist creatures are not as good defensively as they might be in other sets. I don't think I would call them unplayable just yet (we still have to see how everything shakes out) but it does feel like the Enlist mechanic makes them a good deal worse.

I don't think it matters that much one way or the other. As I said, the colors all seem solid to me.
