What you crybabies are failing to understand, is SHE chose to buy land in a SMA zone. SMA zoning was created to manage shorelines from overdevelopment, to protect shorelines from damage, to protect against loss of shoreline resources, to ensure access to shorelines, to protect shorelines with cultural significance etc etc. This is why she’s having to apply for a SMA permit. Any time you build, even on non SMA zoned land, you need to get your building approved and permitted, you can’t just build whatever you like… but when it’s an SMA zoned parcel there’s extra processes to get approved because we only have so much shoreline and it needs to be protected. Likewise, because of its zoning, the community is welcomed to speak of any concerns, for example if a particular parcel is on an ahupua’a division such as this parcel, or if building a huge home could affect the land or sea (in this case there’s a lot to consider because of Kāne’ohe bays rare marine ecosystem). The mentality that “I bought land, I can do whatever I like with it” may fly in Kentucky, but not here.
