Thanks. This is really sooooooooooo classic. Groucho was the greatest. both with one-liners, "the eye-brows", and "the LOOK". THERE WILL NEVER be another Groucho.

Yeah...that was weirdly funny-- he's totally joking about the husband she had 8 kids with, being dead. ...Not funny...but what he SAID WAS funny. That's why I never liked this show.... I cringe the whole time ...
@charleswinokoor60233 жыл бұрын
@@kiajulian4619 I disagree. Groucho not only was perceptive enough to know that he could get away with that kind of arguably risky joke, he could also tell that she would not be offended. That’s why I think it was a great line.

In case you don't recognize him, the guy at 1:28 is the great cartoonist Virgil Partch (VIP). This guy had the wildest sense of humor, but it was a different type of humor than Groucho Marx's. I don't know if it came across on TV, but I'd like to see the whole thing to see him & Groucho's back & forth conversation. It might not have been much, because a cartoonist might not have the verbal repartee of a comedian like Groucho, but it would be interesting to see. VIP could also get quite risqué in his jokes.

I don't think I could watch actors portraying Groucho, Chico and Harpo. It would never make it. Just too original, those folks. I'd rather watch their original stuff. I can't imagine any contemporary actors having any idea how to portray these people. You could never reproduce what they did.

This is why being dirty is never as funny as not being dirty. YBYL only went so far as to suggest what could be dirty based on the contestants stories but never actually letting it out. Groucho always said that "it's what you don't say or see that's funny or beautiful".

I agree with David James -- a movie on Groucho would be a good idea although much would depend [IMO] on exactly who played Groucho. Not only was Groucho a master ad-libber but just as often his biggest laughs came from his facial expression(s) where he instinctively knew what the audience was thinking when those contestant comments could go all sorts of ways interpretation wise and he lets the moment capture laughs even when he opted to say nothing! The one that sticks in my mind was when he interviewed one "Gonzalez Gonzalez" and I'm sure it's somewhere on You Tube. Ahhhh, for those great 50's era shows and what was then considered "racy." But hey, and I'm clearly dating myself here, even "Ricky and Lucy" had to use separate beds although they were married both in the popular sit-com and in real life! Go figure! ;-)

This is brilliant humor but it only works when you maintain a decent culture. Once you've reached the level of degeneracy that we currently "enjoy", there's no more room for the type of suggestion that makes these quips work.

A few of the clips were pretty funny--but I never liked this show. I get the same feeling when I watch the Dick Cavett show. It's a cringe-fest. You sqirm in your seat the whole time and you can't wait for it to be over...for EVERYBODY'S sake. Cool the way he can play guitar tho. He plays in the movie "Horse Feathers (1932). He's pretty good!
