I need to listen to myself. 2) That’s a number 1 tactic for scammers. A combination of confidence and “I’ve already inconvenienced myself FOR YOUR BENEFIT. I'm glad you didn't lose money and I'm extra glad you shared the story. I had someone try this exact same scam on me when I was selling on FB marketplace and it was a new scam to me, so I didn't catch on until they asked me to pay something, then I backed out of the deal. You shared some good lessons people can learn from: Listen to your intuition; If people are pushy or use combative language, it's a red flag; If people make you feel lesser during your interaction, it's a red flag; If anyone wants you to pay when you're the seller, It's a red flag. Scammers scam because it works. If people didn't fall for it sometimes, they wouldn't do it, so don't feel bad for falling for it. It's good we can learn from each other and honestly a little sad that people are called stupid for wanting to be able to trust other humans. Scammers are the assholes, not the scam victims.

I don't know how common this sort of thing is in the Netherlands, but this is why I _never_ give out my address when using Marketplace. It's better to meet the person in a public place like a store or a gas station or something similar. That aside tho, it never dawned on me they'd scam you by asking for your email and then doing this weird request for money. It's so incredibly odd.

These scammers are experts and they are "fast-talkers" so not only do you have to always have your guard up which is very stressful in this society we live in but it's sad. You can't trust anyone! I use to think my husband was weird, never giving out our address, phone number, etc...we never have people over unless it's family (even then there are some members who don't know where we live, again, sad), etc... But now that out kids are older I am happy we stuck to this life of secrecy. I don't have to fear for my kids at home or people trying to scam us here at home. Now our kids are cautious too and I am glad! Another reason to STAY away from Facebook and these social media sites! You NEVER know who you are really talking to! We love you Nikki, thank you for sharing and being open about this fu*ked up experience. You were trusting and some asshole took advantage of you. I wish I could punch him in the throat for you! Hopefully this experience will help others in the future!

So, just to add to all of this, I also want to point out that it's possible that the man you spoke with the second time may not have been the original scammer. The fact that you were blocked on messenger means that the scam profile probably blocked you. The person you found may have been the original owner of the FB that was cloned. As someone who works in banking, unfortunately, we see these sorts of scams quite often. I'm really glad that this worked out for you in the end.

This happened to my roommate recently! She was trying to sell a table and the guy was doing the same thing. Thankfully, she also googled Facebook Marketplace and found out about the scams. When she told the guy she knew it was a scam and wouldn't be going through with the transaction, he started threatening to come to our house. Obviously, he didn't because he probably lives in a different state or country entirely, but it was really traumatizing.

I hope this is as helpful to others as it would have been to me when I fell for a similar situation in August of 2021. I also ignored the icky feeling in my gut. The email was in my spam folder! It said I had been charged $496 to renew my Geek Squad membership. Although I didn’t remember having a subscription, I panicked and CLICKED ON THE LINK. While they were ‘attempting to reverse the charge’, they accessed my bank account and took a lot of money. Luckily, the situation was resolved and I got the money back after 5 harrowing days. I’m not stupid cow😂 either!!!😂 I’m so happy that there was a satisfactory solution for both of us. P.S. After a year and a half, I still never even open my spam folder! I don’t have anything from this collection. I think your look is fabulous….everything about it!💛

Myself and others recently got scammed by a well known indie brand. It sucks when you pay your hard earned money, and instead get something that is defective, and the brand won't even acknowledge your emails or that there's an issue with their products. And to make matters worse, Paypal sided with them because supposedly they send the products, which are defective. Just goes to show that brands, and Paypal cannot be trusted.

We were scammed through Mercari last year. It was a $450 purchase that they provided tracking info for and everything. I was even able to track the shipment yet it never showed up even after it showed as delivered. Luckily Mercari gave us our money back but after that I am leery of using any of those things anymore.

Sorry you went though this but happy you never lost money. I had similar around Xmas, I bought stuff on ebay, postman came with a signed for envelope... i signed got in, the envelope was empty! I checked ebay and all feedback was " sent empty envelope" they do it signed for so it shows its been delivered!!! But you don't have the goods you paid for... luckily PayPal refunded me! I had something similar happened through Amazon, where my phone got hacked and they were trying to get my bank information to get into my account. My husband caught it in time and helped me to fix everything by changing my passwords and making sure that my phone and other accounts were safe. So I understand the feelings of embarrassment, and wanted to let you know, you are not stupid, because I am a very smart person also, and I was also almost fooled as well. You're not alone in having a near miss experience like that. It can leave us feeling foolish, but the scams are highly manipulative and sophisticated, and the way I see it, I would be a miserable person if I went through the world on high alert and suspicious. I'd rather take people at face value and think the best of them, until proven otherwise. I like me a pair of rose coloured glasses. One tip: always check the website of a courierservice to independently check. When in doubt call customerservice from the number on the website, never from a link sent to you to avoid one of their group sweet talking you into the scam.

The people that scam are professionals and they know and count on those very responses. It can happen to anyone and it can happen fast. As much as some say "I don't trust anyone" or "I don't need anyone" humans are inherently social and trusting beings, no matter how much our mind may say "well that's kinda odd" we still "want" to trust people. Don’t feel bad. It can happen to everyone and some scammers are quite good at it. Me and my husband bought two horses from out of state. Turns out it was a scam and the person selling them used pictures and videos of horses from other websites. We’re out a lot of money and had to file a complaint with FBI and fraud department of the banks. I consider myself to be a smart and educated person but some of these scammers are VERY good at it.

I got scammed on IG a few years back. I lost $40 but I did learn to be more cautious with what I purchase online. I wanted to purchase an eyeshadow bundle but the business never sent it and then disappeared. I reported it to the authorities. Turns out their physical address was fake too. I also reported them to IG as well as the new name they were going under at that time. It sucks being scammed but sometimes it happens. 😖 💖

Oh, sorry this happened! Thanks for sharing Likely you didn't pay money - i once got scammed, also while trying to sell some old stuff on a new platform, and did actually lost some. That time i was reached through WhatsApp (while this platform did have its own message tool) by "buyer", who sent a very legit looking link to this site asking me to enter card info, - and it was kinda strange, but also kinda not, since this platform is withholding your payment until the delivery company confirms the buyer received your stuff. But this linked by them site appeared to be a payment page, so i just payed someone the price of my goods 🤦 They also had audacity to say "something isn't working, i dont get my order confirmation, try again". And i also had been pushed and rushed relentlessly during all this process. So yeah, I would suggest don't do money stuff if you just got out of bed and had no breakfast like me then, cause scams sly and want you stupid 😔

I am so sorry that you almost got scamed. I sell a lot on Facebook but dont use Marketplace anymore because they come up with new scams all the time. This scam they try all the time with me right now if I use Marketplace. It is best to sell in special groups like shoes i shoegroup, makeup in makeupgroup. That way it is most safe to sell or buy on Facebook I think. I have been scammed but in another way and it was not fun. The scammer were very threatening so I reported it to the police but they didn't do anything.

I went online to buy a bike. I always wanted a red schwinn with a basket. I bought from a site I can’t even tell you the name. 3-4 weeks go by no bike. I went to PayPal there was a fed ex delivery date but it was 3 weeks prior to when I ordered the bike. I was scammed 😢 no red bike with a basket 😢 I was so sad. PayPal did nothing and told me my bike was delivered. I was so mad. 😢 I never used PayPal again since that incident. I did call my bank and I did get my money back. Beware where you buy goods as well. You’re not stupid but a good person who is honest. It’s sad we can never trust people to fulfill there end of the bargain.

Thank you for sharing! Something very very similar happened to me on Marktplaats. Same tricks, same communication style. Luckily, my phone suspected something was wrong with the link and didn't even allow me to go to the website. So the scammer got very angry and started swearing at me 😂 To be honest, I realized it was a scam only a couple of days after all this happened. And the same thing - I consider myself a smart person. But it's not about your IQ, it's about your EQ usually (emotional intelligence). Scammers usually play on feelings and subconscious reactions and these will always overwrite what logic tells you. I'm happy it all ended well for you though ☺
