I actually had a thought about that after my last rewatch of those episodes. Now it's totally possible (even probable), that the Gentleman is just the type that abandoned the Ruby when he discovered she was pregnant. And the fact that he has bed partners in Zadash and the "more than just business" relationship with Ophelia seems to support this. However, the fact that Ophelia is another Tiefling (albeit of another color), and the choice of the word "preposterous" made me wonder if there's something else going on. Complete and likely false speculation, but what if he actually did have something to do at sea, and his travel took him across the path of Ophelia. She seems like the type to have hidden powers, so I'm wondering if she altered his memory somehow to make him believe that she was the one whom he loved. Then she kept him on a tether-hook and used his skills and knowledge to her benefit, leaving him wanting her but unable to attain the woman he thinks is his true love, hence his seeking companionship elsewhere. It would make him less of a deadbeat dad and more of a tragedy. It's a complicated idea and likely completely wrong, but Matt does love to have a few extra twists in the story, and this campaign is made with a more morally gray tone.

Not really. Hellish Rebuke is usually a fire based attack. There is an Unearthed Arcana version of an Ice Tiefling and there is one in Tome of Foes but they don't learn Hellish Rebuke. I think it's more of a flavour thing especially since Jester's hellish resistance is against cold and not fire. It also fits in with the idea of The Gentleman as he is a water genasi
