shdw787 Not really. If a game has variety and is introducing new mechanics, environments that are used to alter the gameplay, or a change of objectives, I don't think it would be repetitive. Nier isn't repetitive to me because of their intuitive changing of gameplay. I think classifying all games as repetitive would be foolish. Take the indie game Braid for example; it's just solving puzzles with the same gameplay and only movement and a jump key, but the mechanics constantly change to keep things fresh and not repetitive

I really wouldn't say there's any thing that's repetitive in this game other then using the same combo repeatedly or shooting the gun. this game has the most Random and unexpected shit happening constantly. it's constantly throwing new stuff at you. I guess you could call farming repetitive too.

Brett Hietpas I have to disagree with you there. the enemies were only slightly varied and they all had the same robot look. the transitions from different game play types felt more like they were obligated to change something instead of making it more natural, however, they did manage to pull off the natural feeling of changing game play in certain parts.

Good video other than the comment about "its not the most groundbreaking element of the game" in reference to the story. To say that about a Yoko Taro story and storytelling is evidence that the multiple elements to the story completely flew over your head. I'm compelled to assume you played through Ending A only, but in the case you did get through all the main endings (A B C D and True Ending E) and you're able to say that, then you missed all of the deeply LAYERED, multi-directional, philosophical proposals the storytelling conveys in both big and small ways. The story and his ideas within them, as per the usual Yoko Taro's style, are not the usually obvious kinds and they do tend to go over a lot of people's heads, which is why his older games stayed as niche-ish and had a cult following, because the people who did realize those mind blowing and emotional elements are going to be super passionate about supporting it, while those who didn't are going to focus solely on how bad the graphics/gameplay were for them.

You said what I was thinking, thank you. Ive seen a few reviews so far that say the story was flat or bad and every time its been from someone who only played the first ending... The game, and more importantly the story, drastically changes through each ending... I just started Ending C/D and the story has literally been completely upturned on its head and inside out...I know it seems like it might be unimportant. But only playing through ending A is roughly equivalent to playing Skyrim until you get to Whiterun and assuming thats the end. It has so much more too it than just the first go.

I don't think Jake actually beat endings A-E. He didn't mention important elements that generally would characterize someone playing through the whole story-line. Perspective switching? Plot twists? Nothing? I know Yoko Taro is a fairly unknown figure but give the guy atleast some credit on what he does best guys.

I've beaten all 5 playthroughs and i'll say i severely disagree with your viewpoint, although i don't know if you have. And ending A generally speaking has always intentionally been the most 'vanilla' of the endings in Drakenier to expand context in other playthroughs.

A was meant to be a very typical ending so it can contrast better in B. I actually prefer it like this to the original Nier's ending A when a lot of the plot was already revealed near the first ending.

Just actually finished the intro/tutorial, the first time since January. Amazing experience :) and I'm looking forward to getting my teeth into the rest of the game. If you're looking to get through the first part without getting really frustrated, hold down the right bumper button and fire continuously. Put the difficulty setting to easy and you basically won't use any of your recovery charges until most of the way through the intro. I started playing this when I was less skilled at playing console games so I'd suggest even with the above tips you get comfortable with controllers and shooters first rather than dive into this as a complete newbie.

I loved it and highly recommend it, the combat system is just brilliant. They'd put up such a huge effort in making 2B look so fast, nimble and elegant at the same time, there are so many different combowombos depending on the gear set of your choosing that will provide a wide variety of options on how to engage the enemy. Then comes the music... MYGOD the music is just as good as the soundtrack of the first one. They kept the essence and writing, basically what made the franchise so awesome and unique, while also improving it's flaws. I give it 9 Hussies out of 10. WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE

Turns out it is. I have Horizon and Breath of the Wild and dropped both completely to put over 80 hours into Nier: Automata. If you've been craving something different than the formulaic yearly editions and like an intricate plot, this game is fantastic. It's quirky, dark, and just generally awesome. Also, musical score is spectacular. Unbelievably good. Like Metal Gear or 90s Square RPG good. Best soundtrack I've heard in years. They hired the composer to add some music to the Final Fantasy DLC. How often do you hear of Final Fantasy getting outside help for the score considering that franchise has among the all-time best reputations for music?

I'm gonna say if you have not played the drakengard games or the previous Neir game, you can't take in the full scope of the story. I played Neir back when it came out for PS3. It is a classic for me and always be a favorite. I thought I fully understood the story until I started to look into the drakengard series. That being said, I've yet to play Automata but can not wait to pick it up next week. Drakengard games are hard to find along with Nier, but if you have the chance, give them a chance. ESPECIALLY Nier

I played on Steam. The requirements are dumb, but I turned the res down to 1200x800 and it works fine at at least 40-60FPS. It's decent enough for me to play. The graphics really don't take a hit tbf on that setting either. Also I love the game and the character designs. 2B's butt is enticing.

This is probably my favourite game of all time. The dynamic soundtrack and the setting makes this work more of a once in a lifetime experience than a game, as I will never have the emotions I had from when I first played it.

I am about to finish this game. Atm working on unlocking the ''true'' ending. But my only complain about this game is the difficulty. Later in the game you become so strong and powerfull that you can litarly just spam square-triangle thanks to your chip build. But turn it to hard and you will be 1 to 2 shotted by enemies. So just a little balancing here and there and this game is godly.

I played NIER on PS3 and it was the most original game I had played and my first console was pong lol. The characters were real on a level that I had not experienced until then. I cared more for them than cast of the cast of FF7. I replayed it and got all the endings, cross bread flowers to get the white hybrid only bad thing was the glitch in acquiring eagle eggs that were just not there. I am getting this game after bills next month, thanks for the review and I am now subscribed. I will post video of my game play with 4K ultra settings. UPDATE: The sequel is having issues with resolution, freezing, crashes and unwanted screen resizing... may just grab fallout 4 season pass, but I am hoping that they patched it. Not finding any real patch info. In nier they never patched the eagle eggs, as if they flatout refused... like when the royalty checks came they went on a bender and just abandoned any though of the players so in a way it does not surprise me at all.

the game is depressing because if you enjoy the story you get attached to the characters, then have to watch them die, and if you just wanted it to be over, if you understand the love at all the Android's were made by the machines so the machines would have an enemy, and once they have been defeated, one way or the other, everything is redone, so everything youve done meant nothing because through the whole game you were nothing, just an insignificant speck in an infinite cycle, it will happen again whether you want it to or not, so technically the story can never end until you as the player choose to end the cycle by simply giving up, but there is always someone else who will play and therefore restart and continue the cycle

I bought both. I was really disappoint in Zelda's graphics. I haven't even turned it back on since deciding I didn't like them, and yes I bought the switch to play it on. Such a waste, however I also bought Mario Cart 8. So at least it won't be a total lost.

People who say they don’t like “second play throughs” or “new game plus” modes, missed the point of nier automata. The five “endings” and playthroughs in nier are not really endings in the game. They are just game mechanics and semantics using those terms, to break fourth wall in letting the player feel what the androids are experiencing. Also each ending is just an end of a chapter in the game. You are not replaying anything, the story is progressed in a linear fashion. So when people make a review on the game without playing the five “endings” they actually haven’t finished the game yet. Not even once. Finishing route A is not finishing the game once. It’s finishing chapter 1 in a book and calling it quits.

Nice review. The addition of 2d segments and flight suit battles are an incredible touch. Honestly, I would've loved to see more, especially with the flight suit. Not that I can complain because NieR is a solid game but the world could have used a couple more locations. Overall, as pointed out the areas are great and perfectly sized. As for repetitive, I hate when that comes up because games by and large are just that, at their core. You repeatedly hit x buttons to take down enemies from A to B. You can throw in QTE but that overused for so long and actually takes your eyes away from what's going on... Anyway it really grinds my gears when I hear people knock a game for being repetitive because most if not all games are.

I played this game when it first came out on PS4. I kept dying either on the first boss or before. Having to start the game over was highly annoying. I gave up. I fired the game back up on PC recently and breezed by that first boss and now the game is so much better. I am glad I gave it another chance. The save system is really weird, though.
