The explanation from the strange man is he has dissociative identity disorder or did until he "lost" Gavin after receiving a letter from Tom who said his father would be proud of his accomplishments. He lost the only thing that helped him cope with his father's death and in turn sent him on a completely different spiral. The letter says he used to trick people into thinking he was from London and that both him and Gavin were from Berkshire. The evidence for him being Gavin is pretty good in my opinion. He isn't pretending Gavin is gone he literally lost his split personality and he thinks Gavin is gone.

Edepot believes the Cave Hermit is Gavin. He's based the evidence on his build and the fact he uses British phrases like "Sod off" etc. Okay, he has an American accent when he speaks, but if you read Nigel's letter it mentions how Gavin and Nigel used to pretend to be Cockneys, when in fact they're said to be from Berkshire, England. Perhaps Nigel has amnesia or something and doesn't remember when Gavin actually went missing, just like Captain Hayden Russell doesn't realise that he's been standing guard at his post for 35-43 years after the war ended. Might it be possible that Gavin has been missing for much longer than Nigel can recall. He could've gone to live in a cave and lost his British accent.

Jack Pattillo and Geoff Ramsey (both of AH and Rooster Teeth) are in the game and it seems like an opportunity to joke that Gavin wasn’t. Apparently, Gavin derives from the name Gawain (meaning, ‘God send’) who was a knight of King Arthur’s Round Table. And Gavin was an English chap. Sean called Arthur English, due to the association of Arthur’s name to King Arthur. In the Epilogue, Jack mentions that one of the stories that he likes is King Arthur, which John comments is a fine name. John gives Jack the alias of Lancelot during the first part, due to this. Maybe Gavin is Someone that the gang knows? Trelawny?

I first met Nigel in Murfree Brood territory desperately searching for his friend. I felt I knew *exactly* what happened with Gavin because not a minute later I rode by the Kamassa River and found a hanging man and was ambushed by Murfree Brood. So bear with me y'all but this is an easter egg for Roosterteeth's Achievement Hunter. See there's already 2 Achievement Hunters voice acting in the game. Gavin is british irl, and in their long running gtav series gavin will run off and someone will say 'wheres gavin?' I'm not saying there isn't rdr2 lore around the characters. But this really is a joke. Please upvote. The greater rdr2 community doesn't seem to ever pick up on this in joke. Every thing fizhy said was right. This is just the backstory.
