When I was 18 I bought my 1st tenor sax. I plowed my way to learn jazz standards, with Billie holiday as my main influence. When I was 40 I got fired from my factory job, thought it was one if the worse days of my life,, turned out to be one of the best days.and never got another viable job since. However, I was freed up to embark upon a career as a street musician. Mostly in Roanoke va, and Savannah ga. But some in New Orleans, Memphis, LA, San Diego , as well as many cities in the US , in Canada and Mexico. But holiday was with me the whole way. I was a practicing alcoholic until I turned 38. I aways thought I'd have to take a drink before playing in public, but the opposite was true. but, Ms Holiday was a huge factor in my recovery. Is as if she warned me not to take the road she did as I felt her presence close to me.i loved her madly.

She has SO many songs she owned and no one else could come close to including this gem. She was always chic and turned out beautifully and a riveting performance; it's impossible to take one's eyes off her. I have everything she ever recorded, including unreleased sides, and she was incapable of making a boring record. Even when she recorded a song several times every version is unique. Compare "God Bless The Child" on Columbia, Decca and Verve. Among the greatest singers on the planet she was always the favorite and the role model, and that includes Mr. Sinatra and Miss Lee and Miss Dinah Washington.

My father never watched TV unless it was Baseball or the Fights. But, I remember him commandeering the old Admiral for this program and I was not happy because Dobie Gillis or some other stupid show was on at the same time. So, with reluctance I watched it and after about a minute or so, I was transfixed before I knew what that meant. Something about her was so honest that no one has ever come close to duplicating in my humble opinion.
