A lovely cacophony unlike any other type, with that whistling alternator belt. Lovely to see. Very enjoyable. Thanks for sharing - I much enjoyed a ride on this bus some years ago also.

Maidstone has the metropolitan too and later metrobuses made a change from VRTs was this part of NBC used for evaluation of different bus types ,never like plastic seating hot in summer cold in winter and if you had a late running driver you could slid off no green road then to worry about 😂😂
@DANEBLUEGNOME KungKimYeung: Back in those days, AV1 (the first Volvo Ailsa in Hong Kong) of China Motor Bus sounded exactly like that. It ran on Route 80, and when it turned into San Ha Street (in Chai Wan), even I was living in Block 14 of Chai Wan Estate (>300m down that street), I could still hear it coming. The high-pitched turbo whistle and low-pitched axle groan were really loud... FF3170: This bus is 2-3 months younger than AV1, and their VIN only differed by 20. If I understand it correctly, that whistling sound was not from the turbo, but from the alternator belt. Ailsa mk3 updated the alternator belt and rear axle design, so those unique noises are gone... CHEUK CHI TONG: I used to live in Sai Wan. Sometimes I caught those AV's on Route 10. I remember that their seats were covered in moquette, so my brother called them "furry bus", while I always mistook them as LV's (Leyland Victory mk2).

The Volvo Ailsa Sounds better than Blue Bird of Costa Rica.

Noisey or what. There was 17 Ailsa in Derby. Am sure passengers preferred ride quality of a fleetline

Yes i know but that axle is really f---ed , the secondary gear sets in each rear hub need changing. The old girl has clocked up a high mileage hence the howl. Several years ago at a bus rally in Bristol i rode an ext Wumptey Ailsa of similar vintage ,1976 and no way did she sound as noisy , probably due to a re-con axle.

Best buses in the world. Pity Volvo cars are not as reliable.

I drive a VH hybrid that’s lovely compared to what I drove in London 25 years ago metrics with holes in the cab floor
