Nice review Nigel. Looks to be a straightforward build. Only submarine I’ve ever had was the kind you put baking soda in and played with in the bath as a kid, lol. I am going to order one for myself and have a go Cheers, stay safe and look forward to this build.

Nigel - this is a WW1 U-Boat, therefore no swastika. I have the battle flag from my grandfather's ship, which he scuttled at Scapa Flow after the war. It looks exactly like the flag decal, although much more used and weathered ;). BTW, this is a submarine as U-Boat is short for Untersee-Boat, which is German for undersea boat. Looking forward to your build of this.

Thank you Nigel. It’s sitting on the to-do shelf behind me.....when I’m running a marathon, I always look for a “pacer” at the start and sit quietly on their coat tails to get me through the race. So, in your own time🙂.....

Love the kit and can't wait to start it but the book was a real let down not the greatest design job, a right bleedin mess😀 might build along with you so looking forward to your next video set - Doog and Andy gave us good heads up on the kit. All the best Nigel, fellow fox terrier owner, David

Thanks for the review Nigel, Waiting for the photo-etch or brass to come out. The antennae seem to fragile for rigging and the gun, conning tower etc would pop with the extra detail

Good review 👍 I see what you ment about the masts and agree that brass rod would be much stronger installation. I hope I can save up for one before there all sold out

Up until the 1950s submarines had a 'conning tower', which was a small watertight compartment above the main hull where the periscope and some other controls were operated from. The last submarine built like this was USS Triton in 1956. Ever since, subs have been designed so that all control ('conn') is done within the main hull, and the structure above has become known as the 'sail'.

Hiya Nigel - loved the video - great review thank you. Just one thing - I noticed on your review you mentioned whether or not it should be an Eagle or a Swastika on the naval ensign. This is a WW1 era sub so it wouldn't be a swastika. Love the channel - keep up the good work 👍
@NigelsModellingBench3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for putting me right on that. What a bloody idiot!!
@crazylocha25153 жыл бұрын
From Michael Lowery's uboat net website- Kaiserliche Werft, Danzig (hence the term KaiserlicheMarine- Kaiser's navy and that eagle is his German National symbol from WW 1) In the autumn of 1904 works started on initiative of Grandadmiral von Tirpitz. But the final order came only on 4 March 1906 with the U 2. Hence, you had the Prussian element that was folded into the Austro-Hungarian empire separate from the German area's at the time. There were separate flags for the ships, so it's one of those little details that does matter as some "German crewed" Austro-Hungarian flagged ships sailed into the Med etc. Once the war broke out, it was a combination under that Kaiser's Eagle that became a more permanent symbol until the Nazis came into power.

Nigel, when you do get your new camera, be sure to get a circular polarizing filter to fit what ever lens you choose. You will be able to adjust the filter to eliminate the glare that you get from shiny boxes, bags, instruction books, etc. They are inexpensive and widely available.
@tmcmurdo8263 жыл бұрын
As a matter of fact, in the meanwhile, you could probably just tape a piece of polarizing plastic over your phone camera to eliminate glare.

Thank you very much. Hopefully I can get one this summer??????

Just check some reference pictures on line the paint instructions appear to be wrong for the intake and exhaust, one is definitely in a lighter colour than the dark grey in the instructions.

Mmm, I love waffles! The covers you refer to as boobs are for the life rafts. That's why they are painted red. Early WWII U-Boats had similar canisters.

@toboldlygosmodelworks19733 жыл бұрын
@@NigelsModellingBench no sink marks in mine, if there was I wouldn't be too worried - as I suspect the decks got tin canned under water pressure any way.
@NigelsModellingBench3 жыл бұрын
@@toboldlygosmodelworks1973 well, the deck wouldn’t suffer any pressure as it would be open below it so equal pressure either side, if it’s the same as a type VII. Have you looked for longitudinal sinkage along the length of the deck?

All 'submarines ' up to the first nukes were 'submersible surface ships' rather than true submarines. The hull form was primarily designed for cruising on the surface where they spent most of their sea time.
@NigelsModellingBench3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Is it a hull or fuselage?

@@NigelsModellingBench usually the outside part of the 'hull' you can see is known as the casing which covers the inner pressure hull which keeps the water out!
