I’m from Lesotho. I captained the national team from 1994-1997! I’ve experienced mind games in Africa, it’s everywhere. But this is next level. It’s not even mind games, it’s beyond that. This put Nigerian players in grave danger. That airport isn’t even operational, it’s only used for hajj. So pathetic. No Wi-fi, no electricity, nothing. To tell the pilot to divert to another airport just as the plane was in its final approach to land? C’mon man! All this for 3 points???? There’s more to life than 3 points. It’s a 3 hour drive from that airport to Benghazi. Very unsafe, especially given the political situation in Libya. All the governing bodies have to fine Libya heavily, and make sure they don’t ever stage a home game in the near future.

@thabanesutu79 That's exactly what my fear was. That region of Libya is a tinderbox with all the geopolitical tension. I had no idea that they were diverted to Al Albraq International Airport in Bayda. It was inhumane the way they were treated. I'm just happy that the players were able to get back to Abuja safely. This hurt me not only as someone of Nigerian heritage but also as a human being. Fifa must investigate this. Thank you for sharing your thoughts 🙏🏿.

Mutiu Adepoju was part of that team, as was Nduka Ugbade. He was the captain. I signed for Al Ahly in 1993 and played against Emmanuel Amunike during his short stint with Zamalek. Good times!

@ozzyphil742 ай бұрын
Definitely the lives of everyone on the plane were in danger and the pilots are the heroes of this episode. Forget whatever happened on the ground, as despicable as that was, the real drama and near tragedy was the diversion. They sent them to an airport that was at the limits of their fuel, below their safety reserve. That airport had no functional navigational aids, not ILS, not RNAV, not even VOR. Basically the pilots had to make a visual approach at night, in bad weather with no fuel left for a go around. They had to land first-time or they would have crashed. The only thing that saved them was the pilot knew the area having worked around that region for about two years at some point in his career and he pulled it off. But for this fortunate occurrence, it seems likely the flight would have ended in tragedy. THAT is beyond football. It is beyond CAF, it is beyond AfCON and three points. The Libyan Aviation authorities must be sanctioned and I hope Nigeria takes the matter to ICAO or worse. This was an attempt to kill our players and staff, nothing less.
@ozzyphil742 ай бұрын
As an aviation enthusiast, I cannot convey how dangerous a situation this was and how difficult the landing was that the pilot had to pull off. For the pilot to report that they would not have been able to execute a missed - approach and go - around means all the safety margins necessary for the safe operation of any flight; let alone an international one had been eroded. Everyone is focusing on the Ordeal of the players and staff AFTER they landed... But this is the real crux of the Libyans depraved attempt to deal with the Nigerian team. This reckless risk to the lives of all on board and who knows others on the ground. I get why people are not focused on this. If you don't understand aviation, you may not fully catch the import of what that pilot said. I understand it and my blood ran cold when I heard what he said. I hope our authorities, who have aviation professionals who will understand as well, treat this with the seriousness it deserves.

I've noticed a pattern in this comment section of other North Africans justifying what Libya did to the Nigerian players by saying, "...Nigeria did same to the Libyans." The simple answer to that is it is not true. Libya landed their own chartered plane in Portharcourt, of their own volition, despite the match scheduled to take place in Uyo, which is a 1-hour drive from Portharcourt. There was no reason given by the Libyan Federation for landing in Portharcourt. The Nigerians had buses waiting at the Uyo Airport for the Libyans. The Libyans completely refused to fly to Uyo, which is only a 15-minute flight as the two cities are very close. They insisted on driving to Uyo in their own buses without air conditioning. They waited at the Port Harcourt Airport for 3-4 hours for these buses to move them to Uyo. All I've said above are verifiable facts from online and real-life sources. How does that justify putting the Nigerian players at risk for 14 hours in an abandoned airport? Is there no formal way of reporting their grievances to CAF about their perceived maltreatment in Nigeria? Can you all just stop with the whole "..they were maltreated in Nigeria, so they paid back" bulls**t? They knew they were gonna lose the match and decided to go down this dangerous path of stupidity.... Rubbish
@ValentineUgochukwu2 ай бұрын
I'm Nigerian too but an NFF official said they're supposed to land in PH for immigration process which can't be done in Uyo airport bcos it isn't an international Airport yet and after that proceed to Uyo straight with the same aircraft which NFF has already submitted to the authorities to be cleared to fly them to Uyo but they declined citing costs and all that which messed up arrangements for everything. There's no way they can fly directly to Uyo, no visiting team has ever landed in Uyo without touching down for immigration processes in any of our international airports. Even when Super Eagles was going to Libya they had to 1st go to Aminu Kano international Airport Kano for immigration clearance b4 departing to Libya. It's the same thing the SouthAfricans saying here but their own is their fault also bcos from their own country they delayed 18 hours to the scheduled time they're supposed to land in PH, by the time they got to PH the airport in Uyo has already closed bcos it only deals with domestic flights so the SA team had to stay in PH airport till morning so Uyo airport will open. None of this Nigerian fault that's why none of them reported to CAF

Will Obi Mikel comment about this since he was so very vocal in questioning why some players with African ancestry chose to play for non-African nations. I know there are some arguments about this being revenge for similar things done in Nigeria but to me it's irrelevant. Anyone who watched African football in the past knows the games played by host nations whenever another African team came to play a game, whether it be continental club competitions or national teams. Delays at the airports, long bus trips, poor training facilities etc. I thought this nonsense would have come to an end but here we are. Yes it's better now but it really shouldn't happen especially when there is no political hostility between the nations. The fact that they would rarely ever do this to non-African teams is part of a much bigger issue with the mindset within Africa. And it goes beyond football. Even in just general life, travelling between African nations can be a nightmare especially for Africans. Fingers crossed such a high profile incident is the one of the many steps to be taken in fixing this issue across the continent. As usual there will be excuses and defenders of such practices but that's par for the course sadly.

sharing someone else's comment in this same thread, FYI: I've noticed a pattern in this comment section of other North Africans justifying what Libya did to the Nigerian players by saying, "...Nigeria did same to the Libyans." The simple answer to that is it is not true. The Nigerians are experiencing what Palestinians from around the world constantly have to experience trying to get back into Israel and Palestine after traveling abroad. Being stuck in the airport for 8-14 hours getting held up at customs for no apparent reason is the norm.
@RawliglatX2 ай бұрын
Not sure how that’s relevant. Nigeria has no ties to either Isreal nor Palestine.

There's no war between Nigeria and Libya and never has been, so this analogy makes zero sense.

Palestine should build their own airport then so they won’t need Israeli airports. Isn’t it simple?
@Photosoflife2 ай бұрын
@Okafor1000 Yes it does. The Nigerians were held up for BS mind game nonsense. Palestinians have been held up going back years for BS mind game nonsense without a war actually officially happening.

If ESPN bothered to do a basic search about what happened in the previous game in Nigeria, they’ll discover that Lybian team was treated 10 times worse when they arrived in Nigeria last week!! It was very DANGEROUS situation! Lucky Nigerias they were kept safe inside the airport unlike what Nigerian FA did to the Lybians!! The wisdom of the day! Never judge one side based on a sloppy journalism of ESPN 😐

@@tjmerijay6316 Lybian team captain stated: “We left the hotel at six in the morning, and the plane took off at nine. The flight took four hours, and thus we arrived in Nigeria at one in the afternoon, Libyan time.” Continuing, he alleges: “Our luggage was searched inside the plane for an hour, and we were also delayed in transportation from one city to another for three hours, even though we travelled on a private plane, and there was an airport close to the city we wanted to play in. “We later contacted the company responsible for transporting and securing the mission, but they informed us that there was no police patrol at the time, which increased the risk. “After a long time, three non-air-conditioned minibuses and a police car arrived, in addition to two cars from the Libyan embassy.” He pointed out that the mission faced a road full of checkpoints and parking lots, took non-main roads, entered forests, and returned to unpaved roads in complete darkness, “following each other by the lights of vehicles.” He pointed out that the journey took five hours in an atmosphere full of danger, and arrived at the hotel in the late hours of the night, not to mention the hotel’s conditions. He stressed: stressed, “We have suffered from this problem for many years, and although we are willing to tolerate it, there must be a solution to these practices. We demand that the relevant authorities look into these actions, and we express the need for reciprocity.” Get your FACTS RIGHT before judging! Btw, I am not Lybian but I am an African who’s ashamed of these embarrassing actions!!

Full truth: A few days ago, this thing happened to the Libyan national team in Nigeria and hours before the match, the Nigerians killed journalists working with channels. All this is documented by the Libyan Football Federation and the dangerous road full of gangs from which it passed. Years ago, a Libyan player also died from Malaria in Niheria as well. But media channels are only seen from one side. The Libyans avenged and this is their right. Every action has a reaction
