Don't be naive. There's nothing 'secret' or illegal about a country developing nuclear energy. You would have to build nuclear power plants for starters. You can't keep those 'secret'. Ned Media is just clickbaiting you by cloaking the Nigerian nuclear program as some sort of 'secret'. It's even on Wikipedia.

On the surface, it appears to be the pride of Nigeria to have a nuclear program. However, it is a fool's pride. The cost of cleaning up any accident could put an end to all current and future projects in the works because the cost would be unbearable.

We celebrate the positive things. Some of us just can't ignore the experiences we've had with things like the Ajaokuta steel mill, Festac development, etc. that we were proud of and watched them crumble right in front of our faces due to corruption. We talk about it, so we don't dismiss such happenings only to repeat it.

Russia as a whole has a population of about 146 million people with an economy size of $2.133 trillion in 2022. New York City has a population of about 18.9 million people with an economy size of $2.1 trillion. Russia is the last country Nigeria should partner with for anything. You always partner with countries that are democratic and are doing much better than you so that you can suck some of their wealth. Russia's economy is based on oil. Nigeria doesn't want to look at Russia and say "that's our future".

I am personally not a fan of nuclear power. But IF Nigerians want to go in this direction, I recommend focusing on Thorium-based reactors. - I am not a fan of Russia either. If they had not built the steel works in Ajaokuta (or if they had finished the job properly), Nigeria would have saved a lot of headaches. Funny note: if you read the Russian article in an online encyclopedia - which I am not allowed to mention here, it starts with a "w" - about Ajaokuta, it says very clearly: "it was the fault of the Nigerians that it never worked". So I would not put too much hope on them.

Another very good video, very well researched, but just a few things to add, in the '80 the only 2 university offering nuclear physics was Abu and oau, ife, I was a student at ife in 1987 when Russia donated 2 reactor, 1 in each university, their is a nuclear research laboratory in ife till today, this was during Babangida Era, I had been worried about those nuclear reactors since kaduna became hotbed of banditry, nuclear material especially those from the type of reactor that was gifted to us by ussr; it is high yielding uranium, america fear is that al kheda might get there hand unto it and build a dirty bomb, which within their technicality, almost the same thing they did when they told ukraine to give back their nuclear weapon back to Russia in 1994 (Budapest protocol) for security guarantees from Russia, if that happens you know where the bomb is coming. Another thing if this bandit are trying to remove this core material they can contaminate the whole northern nigeria including Abuja making it unliveable for 20,000 years, unless all the top soil is removed. Nigeria is trying to get a nuclear reactor because of Egypt getting 4 from rosatom, although they have economic problems now but they were in a fix because Ethiopia built the Renaissance dam on the blue Nile that affected their aswann hydrogenerator, but the truth is they have too much gas reserve: next to nigeria in Africa, egypt need it as a necessity but they could have used gas turbine. If they can find any western financial backer, but instead of approaching China for gas turbine are building a white elephant new capital with China money, and say the truth Egypt will be hosting Africa's 1st nuclear reactor, South Africa has a research one built for them by Israel during apartheid that they made their A bomb from, in conclusion I agree with you that a modular reactor is what we can handle now for this following reason, modular reactors are sealed to change the core fuel you just pull the core out, the regular reactor take about 2 to 3 weeks to change the fuel, and it has to be changed every 2 years, you have to have trained people with protective gears, that can only be exposed for number of hours everyweek to remove it, taking into account that the people trained in Nigeria universities has never removed a fuel in their life (my girlfriend was a student) the reactor was brought to nigeria by russia technicians that loaded them, then you have to depend on another country to remove and dispose the used fuel another Ajaokuta Situation. The most important lesson about nuclear reactor they are very expensive, never completed on time,always outgrow it budget, and they do not last a long time average life span 30 to 50 years because the radiation from the core detoirating the cables and rust in the pipe and the cores, that means if Nigeria has built a power nuclear reactor at the time they built Kanji dam in 1969, it will be at the end of its life now, I might be wrong but this is my honest opinion, stay with gas turbine make it effective disregard whatever the western country environmental criticism be like China.

@@ibrahimsalami4014 modular reactors are relatively safe than the rest, even your all mighty ussr in 1987 chernobyl or three mile island in New york 1979 and Fukushima of recent chernobyl will be radioactive for the next 20,000 years if almighty Russia can not prevent core meltdown, Nigeria can not even feed himself by the way I have lived in USA most of my life, nobody generate more power from nuclear power than USA, Russia is not even, half the gigawatts of energy, learn how to make motorcycle before you start talking about going to the moon, I may be wrong but I just don't believe we are technological and security wise ready, like I say this my humble opinion, and we can cleannot the oil spill in ogoniland, we need expatriates, how are we going to clean nuclear fall out and nigeria is broke.you are absolutely right. If the new reactor could last 80 years why do you think they scrap there nuclear submarine after 20 years, built with billion of dollars, be sure they are afraid the radiation has detoirated the electrical component, that is why all the reactor in USA was initially certified for 30 years then they will inspect all components, then they gave them 10 more year's, they don't really know themselves, yes the modular Reactors and thorium rod reactor/molten salt reactor are not new concept. They were developed in the 50's they even experimented with them and abandon it because of corrosion, nuclear reactor in sub. That were built in the 50's were modular reactors and none of them is in existence today. They began building commercial power nuclear reactor in1961 and is decommissioned already, France is building one now and it not yet commissioned and its leaking, another problem with nuclear power is you have to rely on you supplier, policies change/government changes, that is problem israel faced after 6 day war embargo was placed on them and couldn't get uranium for there dimona nuclear plant in 1967, hence they have to do the unthinkable, to reinforce what i am saying read this: (news.yahoo.com/china-nuclear-deal-held-over-090000785.html modular reactors) are not very either, in 2017 one of 3 companies that are the big players; Nuscale told the US DoE that it will cost about $1.5 billion to build 1000 MW station in 2017, now they have revised it and said it is going to $3billion that's about capacity of Kanji and you will need at least 2 since when you're reloading you need alternative source of energy.

You are unaware of globalization. Is there really still such a thing as an American company? Perhaps this is true for China. The western countries are capital market based. Individual shareholders own the companies and their policies are for personal profits not necessarily national interest. China's unprecedented growth was in part because of western cooperations relocating plants to exploit cheaper labor, as well as to escape stringent regulatory operating environment. The largest shareholders in some of the well known cooperations in the west may even be Nigerian. During the Bush era, for example, despite 911, the company that won the contract to provide security for the Long Beach Port of Los Angeles was a company from the United Arab Emirates. This is globalization. The key to foreign direct and indirect investment is regulatory environment, policy incentives, and rule of law. It is all about profits. France may have played a role in undermining the Eco currency, however the major reason Nigeria is incapable of exercising influence in its foreign policy is due to our weak economy and political instability. We were even late in signing the AFTA because of our lack of productive capacity. We don't even dominate the West African region military anymore because of our inability to quell insurgency. Chadian troops came into our territory and demonstrated more capacity against Boko Haram than our own military. I however agree that we need to develop domestic capacity through research and production. Notwithstanding, backward integration leads to technology transfer, which will help us leapfrog. We are so far behind, it would be foolhardy not to invite foreign companies to invest in manufacturing. It shouldn't be either or. The government can invest massively in education and fund research through grants. The government also must incentivize diasporans to return with their money and skills.
@markfactor5952
@markfactor5952 2 жыл бұрын
No truer words have been said. Nigeria should start from the basics. Only incentivising diasporan's will lead to technology transfer,fast tracking manufacturing, education etc. When all this happens,Nigeria will be elevated to a position where it will negotiate from a position of power. But it seems the leaders don't even have the mental capacity to dissect through all these potentials

The problem is Nigeria’s colonial status as a British post colonial dependency. The treaty between the sultan of Sokoto and the British government cedes power to the uk over external affairs policy and that is why the uk and us governments continue to support a northern led Nigerian government that is loyal to the west and extremely docile in its leadership of the African continent. Left to it our northern based leaders would cede Nigerias sovereignty to the west to enjoy their continued domination of national politics regardless of independence or not. Remember they never wanted independence in the first place.

You did not get the right info on SOLGAS and GINL partnership. SOLGAS was Obasanjo's son friend company which was recommended by an American during his massive privatisation. A company that does not know anything about steel. It was GEJ that indicted Nigeria of $498m just when Nigeria was winning the case in London. The FG wanted an out-of-court settlement. OBJ gave SOLGAS, and Yaradua took it back after he was killed I guess Yaradua was killed because of these two massive deals he signed with the Russians when the Russian president came to Nigeria to sign the deal. After Yarauda died, GEJ I bet was pressured to give it back to SOLGAS then in PARTNERSHIP with India STEEL company, GINL that was known for sabotaging a deal like that also in Libya. Please get the right information. The Rosatom deal under GEJ was replaced with GE Plants and Ajaokuta sabotage continued and about $500m was indicted. The simple truth is, AJaokauta and such a huge deal will be sabotaged by the west until Nigeria gets the political will to say enough is enough.

Yaradua was sick and died sick. Stick to the facts. He was sick long before he became governor. Those are the facts. Buhari has also been sick and has managed to survive. If it was easy to eliminate leaders of countries then many of them in the world today would be dead.
@naijalolade688
@naijalolade688 2 жыл бұрын
 @Diligence Eke So why were they covering Yaradua's death in Saudi Arabia? They wanted to make it look as if he died in Nigeria. Not until a protest started, they were not going to even reveal his death. You should try to apply reason. Just when he stepped on all the redlines. Is it today they have used Saudi Arabia against Nigeria? The last time was when Buhari was removed, and Idi Agbon was lured to Saudi. Which then made them remove Buhari. So it's not today pls. ok. Also, answer why GEJ sabotaged Ajaokuta and Rosatom deal. This is where the real answer is. GEJ continued all the projects his boss started but not those two why? What are they hiding? Yes, GEJ lived to fight tomorrow. A wise leader would. What about Yaradua? A great leader dies for his people.. Just go and check it Nah. Virtually all leaders have one or two things they are fighting inside of them. Could Yaradua's own be managed, yes it could? For your information, Buhari has turned on the Blast Furnance finally. Do you want to answer why they already poisoned Buhari too? Pls, just reason. I'm out.
@diligenceeke3023
@diligenceeke3023 2 жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree. They were hiding it because it was sensitive information. Secondly, some people from the North didn't like the death and wanted to benefit from it. In fact, left for them they'd keep it secret and keep using his signature and controlling the nation in his name. It was a simple power play between the North and South. Nothing more. They just found it offensive to hand over to Jonathan a Southerner, just two years after Obasanjo another Southerner had led the country for 8 straight years. This is the same reason for which Buhari surrounded himself with his kinsmen in case of any vacuum, he expected his brothers to carry on in his name until he was fit to come back.
@naijalolade688
@naijalolade688 2 жыл бұрын
 @Diligence Eke How then can you explain the part Jonathan sabotaged the Ajaokuta steel industry and the Rosatom deal by indicting Nigeria of about $500mln as per the Ajaokuta and also bringing in GE electric which is worth about $10Bil to replace the Rosatom deal his boss started with the Russian president? Please I would like to believe your part but I do not find both of them connecting at all. The delay in installing GEJ was part of the deal he would sign. DONT CROSS THESE REDLINES>... It is the reason his Boss died in the first place and OBJ 100% knows about this. This is not the first time they have done a regime change.. The one of the regime change was to kill Murtala and install OBJ who then handed power over to Sheu-Shagari.. So your idea truly fits a local political ideology but is not the reason GEJ was not installed on time.. What happened to Ibori? He was one of the western Bergainers who GEJ finally also made sure he destroyed. He was one of those ppl used to delay and bargain the terms for GEJ to continue.. I can bet that Rosatom and Ajaokuta were on the table. ANSWER why General Electric, a U.S company replaced a very good deal as Rosatom. Please explain what reason would GEJ continue all the projects his boss started but sabotaged the 2 most important deals. You are talking to someone that has 40 years of Ajaokuta sabotage timeline. Those who have worked on it are either diposed, killed, removed or died. From my deep finding, Ajaokuta was even label a threat to NATO. Can you imagine that. NATO wont allow Nigeria industrialized. This is beyond local politics. Why bcause Naija would have the power to fashion any kind of military harware or machinery needed to counter them.

Agreed. Consider this, if Africa unites completely, it'll be an economy almost as large as India. Consider the scientific and technological achievements of India. It wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility for Africa to be able to achieve those too.

I agree with everything you say. However, you cannot just print money and then it becomes money. That's why the naira is as good as worthless today. Whatever money you circulate must be backed by goods and services for the currency to become viable. To be honest, I would not trust Nigeria to print the ECO currency, considering how much they have destroyed the naira. I have talked with people who remember an exchange rate of N1.5 to $1.0 a long time ago.

Instead of answering the questions I asked you exhibited your normal African senselessness. Would Muslims not find any problem with Christians that would be working at the facility who would want to drink alcoholic wine or live a normal free life? Have you solved the Islamic intolerance prevailing in the North or would you employ only Muslims to work at the facility? Nuclear accidents can be devastating to a country such as Nigeria, and it doesn't do anything to help my confidence especially when I hear that Russia is spearheading the program. Most people remember the Chornobyl disastrous nuclear incident during the USSR era. Russia is known for taking shortcuts at the expense of safety. As a result, they have been inflicted with so many deadly accidents (some public and many more in secret). The Chornobyl incident happened on 26 April 1986 and took several countries years to build a radioactive shield around the plant to last for the next 100 years. The cost of that project is astronomical. If Nigeria wants nuclear energy for power (which I would not recommend), Russia is the worst candidate to partner with considering their incompetence. Nigeria should partner with a reputable country like France or UK or Germany or the USA.

Nigeria could also partner with India on this. India can install its latest IPHWR-700 reactor which is a Generation III+ design and has the complete set of latest safety features like:- A negative void coefficient and double containment chambers with negative net pressure and inner chamber with steel liner, so no chance of a Chernobyl type accident. Passive safety features like passive decay heat removal system, dual independent shut-down systems, one of them driven completely by gravity. Overall, it results in unmanned passive cooling for up to 8 hours, so no chance of a Fukushima like accident. More safety features like dual redundant Emergency Core Cooling System, containment spray and dedicated connection to the clean-up system, etc. I could list more safety features here (like interleaving of primary heat transport system feeders), but they wouldn't make much sense to the uninitiated.
