This was the post Abedi Pele, Odartey Lamptey, Sam Johnson, Anthony Yeboah era when Ghana was struggling to build a new team using young, talented but inexperienced players. The core of this young team comprising the likes of Essien and Derek Boateng ,John Mensah and John Paintsil had finished second in the under 20 tournament which was hosted by Argentina in 2000. These young players will become a formidable Black Stars in future (In a team that also had Muntari Asamoah Gyan and Stephen Appiah) and go on to do wonders in the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.

Probably Nigeria's most balanced team, well coached by SA and SK (may their souls continue to rest in peace). They used Oliseh, Finidi and Lawal perfectly in a fantastically balanced midfield, Kanu in false nine while Aghahowa provided a perfect pivot and pace. Best match the team played IMO was away in Sudan in the 2002 WC qualifiers. Absolute tactical masterclass in 4-0 win.
