I'm from Haiti, and the majority of my ancestry is Yoruba. I like to describe my identity as Haitian/Yoruba. however, I was born with a Igbo and Congolese last name, and a Igbo first name. Both of my middle names are Yoruba . My parents explained the reasons behind this, they wanted to show honor for my igbo and Congolese ancestry as well. Knowing that I identify as Yoruba, will my name be a issue with most Yoruba people since it's not technically a Yoruba name?.

Hi, it's a pleasure to have you here. You have a rounded ancestry, I have to say. 😄🙌🏾 As you might have heard in the video, naming - not just personal names but also other things/objects - is an intentional exercise in Yoruba. Still, your non-Yoruba first/last name being an issue is far from happening. That said, a reasonable suggestion would be to declare your Yoruba name when you are among the tribesmen. It saves you from long talks.😉 Let me add, it is not unlikely that they'd ask your "surname" (family name) and that's because the Yorùbá people also fancy tracing their ancestral lineage. They want to know which "thread you are tied/linked to", which is another reason names are a big deal to us. In such cases where you are asked for a family name, offer your ancestor's name. You can start with the latest one if there'd been a change over the generations. What I mean is, if your first forefathers bore Ajibare and the last of them bore Awodola, you may state the latter and trace your ancestral story back to the former if asked. I hope this helps.
