Secondly, people who always assume that market forces will always correct distortions are either not familiar with economic history or limited in their understanding of how economics works. Rotus...core capitalist who does not care about the rest of the population. When we were in medical school, we were told that it makes no sense to prescribe a medication a patient cannot afford, as we would not have made any difference in the person's condition. I understand the pain of paying more for PMS but it's a reality we can't escape. We've been kicking the can down the road for decades on the issue of subsidy removal. I think now is the time for everyone to tighten their belt and face the reality that subsidy is gone. While I understand why we don't want to let go the extremely cheap PMS we've been spoilt with, for a moment, let's think about all the poorer neighbouring countries (Niger, Benin Republic, Cameroon, Ghana etc) who are paying far more than the current price of N950/L. How are they able to live with higher PMS prices without crying? Nigerians have to take this as a challenge and start looking at creative ways (e.g. car pooling, cutting unnecessary journey, using public transport etc) , to cut their cost to continue to afford a decent level of living.

Why can't FG give Dangote crude for free, ask him to refine it, the FG pays him for the refinement with interest then sell to Nigerians including tax (which will serve as profit for the FG)?.... It's a win win situation, don't you think?

@kkabeach
@kkabeach 2 күн бұрын
@@tony-obua I don't think it will make much difference. Current Situation: NNPC sells 1 barrel of crude to DR at N120k approximately, Dangote refines it and sells it back at N900/L. At 159L to a barrel, Dangote sells a barrel back at N143,100, making N23k per barrel (N145/litre), some of which will go to his cost. Alternative Scenario - Govt gives crude to DR and pay for refining: DR can simply say I will charge you N145/litre to refine.
@kkabeach
@kkabeach 2 күн бұрын
@@shecalledmeneverland7953 The question we should be asking ourselves is, if smaller poorer countries are living with higher PMS prices, why can't we live with it? If we have to go learn from them how they survive it, then we should. Across the world today, most major oil producing countries have deregulated their petrol prices. Take Dubai for example, after deregulation, petrol prices jumped 25% and today petrol is currently sold there for about N1250/litre. It's only when we start paying the full price for petrol, that we will start thinking about alternatives and conservation of energy which will ultimately help reduce our carbon emissions. People will be forced to think twice about making unnecessary journeys, men will be forced to spend more time with their families, local businesses (including schools) will get more patronage, people will walk more and drive less, some car owners today will realise they should really be riding motorcycles instead, more people will choose cycling etc. We will become a healthier society with a closer sense of community. It's a win-win for all.

He's chosen a field that he's passionate about and he's not shy to speak the truth as he see it. Rufai is obviously a socialist and this why he's always in confrontation with Rotus on liberalisation of the market. The true problem we face as a country right now is not petrol subsidy. It's the high exchange rates, but we can solve this issue without massively increasing our foreign reserves. If Nigeria, right now has $100b in reserve, the CBN will quite easily bring the Naira down to N750 to a dollar. The problem now is that we can't quickly accelerate our foreign reserve while we expend billions of dollars yearly on petrol subsidies. We have to bite the bullet (ie let go of subsidy) and give the CBN more firepower to bring down foreign exchange rates. It will be painful in the short run but in the 1-2 years, we'll all be better off.
