I could feel the stress from worrying about the boats around you. Your boat was secure and capable of handling the weather. It is always the people and vessels that do not prepare for adverse weather conditions and are so far from any real safe havens that you have to look out for. It is captains that are not prepared that put themselves and others in danger. Be safe. Great episode!
@OutOnTheReef2 жыл бұрын
I agree a 100% captain some of this Captain's they don't know how to set their anchor properly and sometimes it's also the bottom it's not the beit's not the best so they need to let more chain and scope out in they don't do that and then when bad weather arrives they get surprised but in my case what I do is the 1st thing I set my anchor I put my boat in reverse and make sure my anchor is set a 100% that way I'm guaranteed good anchor Setting. Thanks for watching captain nice to hear from you

Hi Capt.... it goes without saying, Great Video! .... It amazes me how many boat owners have inadequate ground-tackle, and are not well-versed on how to use it. You gave a great description of the importance of over-sized ground-tackle, scope and swing-room!.. On our 35 CT trawler/sundeck we had ground tackle rated for 45' boats. We carried 4 anchors; two of which were mounted, always ready to deploy on a moments notice, on rollers on the pulpit. We have had countless stormy nights at anchor; it's always 'exciting' and always scary! ☺.... I need to go now; I want to re-watch this video! ☺
@OutOnTheReef2 жыл бұрын
Lol Andrew 😁 you are One of my favorite viewers and yes it's good to be oversized and you have experience that in the past. I have learned the hard way in Bahamas through storms And I have improved my anchor Skills with time but this boat owners they own this half a million dollar boats and have no clues sometimes And definitely agree with you a 100% a bigger anchor is better and also having spare anchors like you did you will wear a prepare captain you are an example👍⚓️

Anchor weight is actually not critical, it’s the weight of the chain that matters the most, helpful tip from a naval architect 😊. Heavier anchor with light chain is even worse

Hey Capt Crooked, exciting episode glad I was high n. Dry at my place. I would recommend chain rode in 5/16 and as long as your boat is in length the idea is to keep the rode all of it on bottom as the storm pulls you up and back the rodetakes the brunt of the pull anchor doesn’t move the chain rode takes it and rope rode should be a 10 to 1 scope including height of side of boat 6’ depth + side of boat 3’=9’ x10 scope =90 feet of rope out. High winds equals more rode deployed equals higher wave height I was in bad storm when I was about 10 on my dads boat 18’ a 1968 Woodson. We were trolling about 10 miles out could barely see pacific lighthouse that’s how we knew how far out we were. We had a merc cruiser 120 hp inboard outboard Spet 1.5 hrs catching my dads biggest bull mahi-mahi about six ft long 55 to 65 lbs he was longer than I was. Went to put engine in forward all it did was rev up had to drive backwards all the way back with current and then the storm hit 5+++ high waves slamming the transom I was so scared my dad told me to sit on floor under steering station we finally got to shallow water by sands cut the waves open up and a big coral head right there we slammed it and it knocked the outdrive up blew out the hydraulics to keep the outdrive down and knocked a blade off of prop so my dad had to stand on outdrive to keep it down. Storm finally pasted almost dark heading thru Biscayne bay towards homestead bay front park two miles from channel to ramp engine quit now around 10 pm ended up having to call coast guard they didn’t find us untill morning took us in I said I would never go in that boat again my dad didn’t know he could have lifted the engine cover and shifted in drive manually and this never would have happen JT sorry Capt Crooked I didn’t mean to take all this space thanks John

That's very true captain and by cleaning the fish before putting it on the ice the ice will last longer The reason I didn't do it right away is because I was fishing fast to get to the Anchorage thanks for watching captain

Capt., awesome vid and that grouper looked delicious. I’m in SE Florida and have been in some bad storms during the day but not during the night. I could feel the electricity as I watched, great job staying cool and capturing that footage! Love your content, Stay safe

I’ll be going out there in my 27 ft $300k open center console. Not as comfortable for sleeping as your cabin console but it’s a much better fishing platform and much more useable going to the sand bar and fishing in my area. Everything has its trade offs. I would be envious of your cabin on hot nights or stormy nights but For my use the center console is better since over night trips to the dry tortugas will be a once a year thing. Every weekend will be fishing inside tampa bay and up to 30-50 mile offshore day trips.

Yes you're right James especially for you the fish a lot daily daily that is a great boat but for me I sleep on my boat 90% of The Times so I do need a cabin Especially when I go to the Bahamas and spend 4 nights I do that very often but your boat is great for open sea rough waters that is a 100% better

Hola captain..minute 9.51 when you were looking to the storm approaching I just want to know if you at that point you increased the rain gain or you are just using factory settings..seems that in order for me to have better rain picture I have to increase rain gain to around 70% or more..and if I want to have better surrounding boats etc I have to bring it down..in other words adjust the gain to what I am looking for at the moment..another thing is the orientation of the radar according to boat heading...is something we have to correct continuously? or just once..sorry my ignorance garmin support is very limited ..they want you to experience and "get familiar " with the radar..lol

Goodmorning cap. Im right now on my boat and this is my setting you saw on the video the Gain is at 78% The Sea Clutter is at 24% the rain Clutter is at 22% and i always keep it this way and it works perfect for me ,hope this helps cap. Saludos

if your going to ride out storms, ask a cruiser, anchor lbs equals 2x length of boat, large cabin cruiser or motor sailor might add 10 to 15 lbs for windage, my preference is mantus, even then if the bottom is mud silt like ICW, nothing holds well. Double anchor. Thats why we dive on the anchor, make sure it dug in. In big storms go ask anyone who can drift into you how big there tackle is, if its to small, then move. If a boat drifts down on you, before it gets there put engine in reverse, turn wheel hard to one side and swing on the anchor till out of the way. Make sure to keep anchor line tight, you dont want chain or rope in your prop. Or their prop. Sometimes if possible, pull up your tackle move and reset. If they drag down on you there is a good chance they will foul your anchor line with their dragging anchor line causing a big mess. Big boats with chains can release more chain, and if they must, release the chain if its safe with a ball attached to the end to pick it back up. Even with these big anchors we dont take chances, when the wind exceeds 50mph to 100mph(cold fronts) we put the engine in forward slow to ease the tension on the anchor so to help it not to pull out.

That meal looked delicious and plenty of it . I hate being in a crowded anchorage because someone always starts dragging a starts playing bumper boats when the weather turns bad . Happy to see you made it thru without having to go out in the storm and fend off some idiots boat . Stay safe out there 👍👍🇺🇸

You are absolutely correct about the bigger the boat, the bigger the anchor, in my case, I use two, bow and stern! When a good wind catches my boat, there’s no stopping it, so its better to be safe than sorry! Sometimes, with a smaller boat, it is better to get into shallow waters, where you are safe from others being able to reach you, but I understand that you are in the middle of nowhere, and may not have any assistance to pull your boat out should you run aground.

My dad used to get his boat inspected my coast auxiliary for safety. Those boats more than likely only had bear minimum. Glad you are safe. Just next time when bad weather come around tie up to the front cleith in stead of using the windlass and pulpit.
